How to Stream a YouTube Product Demo Playlist Continuously with FFmpeg

A practical guide to looping prerecorded product demos into a continuous YouTube Live stream with FFmpeg, including playlist requirements, RTMPS setup, bitrate guidance, and troubleshooting.

To loop prerecorded product demos as one continuous YouTube Live broadcast, put compatible files in an FFmpeg concat-demuxer playlist, read it at real-time speed with -re, loop the input with -stream_loop -1, and send the encoded output to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest using the stream key from Live Control Room. The FFmpeg process and the computer running it must remain on; test the preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast.

Prepare a playlist FFmpeg can concatenate

Create a plain-text manifest, for example playlist.txt, with one file entry per line:

file 'demo-01.mp4'
file 'demo-02.mp4'
file 'demo-03.mp4'

The concat demuxer reads these inputs sequentially. It expects matching streams, codecs, and time bases, so demos with different layouts or encoding settings may fail or produce artifacts. Timestamp placement depends on each file’s duration; inaccurate duration metadata can cause gaps or visual/audio glitches. Normalize inconsistent videos to a common format before relying on the sequence. See FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation.

Keep the manifest and media paths under your control. The command below uses -safe 0 to relax concat path restrictions; do not use that setting with a manifest containing untrusted paths. If filenames contain spaces or special characters, use valid concat-demuxer quoting and test the manifest locally before streaming.

Configure YouTube Live and start the FFmpeg stream

  1. Get the ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its server/ingest address and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or commit it to a script repository. YouTube documents resetting a compromised key in Live Control Room. Prefer the RTMPS ingest address when available; YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure extension to RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  2. Choose output settings for your actual stream. YouTube’s rolling encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
  3. Run a representative preflight. Use the Live Control Room preview, inspect audio and motion, and watch stream health and warnings. A running FFmpeg process does not by itself establish that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. YouTube explicitly advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Here is a generic RTMPS starting command:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

Replace the example output address with the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. The key is a secret; avoid leaving it in shared logs, screenshots, or public code. The command illustrates option placement and a starting configuration, not a universal preset. -re reads the input at its native rate and -stream_loop -1 loops it indefinitely; both are input options and therefore appear before -i. FFmpeg documents these options in its command-line documentation.

Match bitrate and keyframes to the video and connection

The example’s 14 Mbps video bitrate and -g 60 are illustrative for an H.264 1080p30 output, not settings to copy blindly. YouTube’s rolling guidance accessed 2026-10-03 recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for H.264 720p30. Match resolution and frame rate to the source, and set the GOP/keyframe interval to the recommended two seconds: at 30 fps, that corresponds to 60 frames; at a different frame rate, adjust accordingly. Keep the interval at or below four seconds.

YouTube recommends CBR and leaving upload headroom: the total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload capacity, with 20% headroom recommended. Include audio bitrate in your capacity planning. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen total bitrate reliably, reduce output resolution or bitrate and test again rather than assuming the encoder’s local status proves the network is adequate.

Choose the right YouTube ingest protocol

For a typical SDR product-demo stream with supported codecs, RTMP/RTMPS is the straightforward path; the example command outputs FLV over RTMPS. HLS is a separate ingest workflow, not an endpoint to substitute into that command. YouTube describes HLS as useful for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support, with higher latency because it sends segments rather than one continuous stream. Its HLS requirements include TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. If you select HLS, configure an HLS-compatible output and protocol rather than sending ordinary FLV/RTMP output. See YouTube’s ingest guidance.

Plan for long broadcasts and recovery

YouTube says continuous live streams can be run from an existing content library. Its statement that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived does not establish the same archive behavior for broadcasts longer than 12 hours. If replay matters, plan a separate recording or archive workflow rather than assuming a longer stream will be saved automatically. See YouTube’s live stream archiving guidance.

This FFmpeg setup loops the playlist while the process is running, but it is not an established automatic recovery system for a process crash, dropped connection, playlist edits made during execution, or timestamp faults. Do not treat a long-running command as unattended 24/7 reliability without validating recovery on your specific FFmpeg build, files, network, and YouTube configuration. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.”

Troubleshoot common failures

  • FFmpeg rejects a playlist entry or cannot open a file: Check that each path is correct, the manifest uses concat-demuxer syntax, and quoting is valid. Test paths locally. Use -safe 0 only when you control the manifest and its referenced paths.
  • The sequence has gaps, artifacts, or fails when it reaches the next demo: Compare the files’ streams, codecs, and time bases; verify duration metadata. Normalize incompatible files before concatenating them.
  • YouTube preview is blank or reports an ingest problem: Verify the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, confirm the selected output protocol matches the ingest path, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health warnings. If a key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
  • The stream buffers or becomes unstable: Check total output bitrate against available upload capacity, including audio, and retain the recommended 20% upload headroom. Lower the video bitrate or resolution if needed, then test again.
  • Playback is choppy or keyframe-related warnings appear: Confirm CBR output and set a two-second keyframe interval, without exceeding four seconds. Ensure the chosen frame rate and GOP value correspond to the intended output.
  • The broadcast stops after a disconnect or FFmpeg exit: The loop option only repeats inputs while FFmpeg is operating; it does not itself restart a crashed process or restore a dropped connection. Investigate the process exit and connection, then restart and verify the YouTube preview rather than assuming automatic recovery.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
