To loop several lecture files continuously, add them to an OBS VLC Video Source, enable Loop Playlist, and send OBS to YouTube using your stream URL and stream key. Your computer, OBS, source files, and internet connection must remain available for this local setup to keep streaming.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; its getting-started guidance says streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube live streaming tips and Get started with live streaming.
- OBS and VLC installed on the computer that will run the broadcast. The VLC Video Source depends on VLC; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS media source documentation.
- Local lecture video files you have the right to stream, plus a reliable upload connection capable of sustaining your chosen encoder bitrate.
Use this procedure for files stored on your computer, not a playlist hosted on YouTube. For one local video instead of several, OBS’s Media Source has a Loop checkbox; for a multi-file playlist, use VLC Video Source.
Build a looping lecture playlist in OBS
- Organize the files. Put the lectures in a stable local folder and decide the order. Avoid moving or renaming them after adding them to OBS, since the source needs to find the files.
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose a scene for the broadcast. In the Sources box, select + and add VLC Video Source. If the option is missing, install VLC of the same architecture as OBS and restart OBS.
- Add and order the lectures. In the source properties, add the video files to the playlist and arrange them in the intended sequence. Leave shuffle off when the lectures must play in a fixed order.
- Enable looping. Turn on Loop Playlist. OBS documents that VLC Video Source can play a playlist and loop after it reaches the end. Check the preview and audio before connecting to YouTube.
- Choose scene-change behavior. If your scene may be hidden or changed, set the source’s visibility behavior deliberately. OBS offers choices such as stop/restart, pause/unpause, and always play; choose the behavior that matches whether playback should continue while the source is not visible.
OBS and YouTube interface labels can change. The current OBS reference is Media Sources.
Connect OBS to YouTube and start the stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live and create or schedule an encoder stream. YouTube’s setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the server URL and stream key as prompted. Treat the key like a password; anyone with it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. YouTube explains stream settings and resetting a compromised key in Manage live stream settings.
- Check the encoder settings against YouTube’s current recommendations for your selected resolution and frame rate. Confirm that the upload connection can sustain the bitrate and that keyframes, audio, and video are configured appropriately; use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than assuming one bitrate fits every format.
- Start streaming in OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the incoming feed to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, verify the video and audio, then click Go live. Do not rely on the OBS preview alone to confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
- Watch stream health after launch. For a long-running channel, check that the lecture advances to the next file and that playback continues after the playlist reaches its end.
Test the broadcast and protect the lecture archive
Before committing to a continuous run, test with representative lecture footage, including its typical audio and motion. YouTube recommends testing, previewing in Live Control Room, monitoring stream health, and setting up the encoder well ahead of launch. Its guidance is in YouTube live streaming tips.

Keep a separate local recording if you need a dependable archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be treated as a complete recording of the lectures. See Archive live streams.
Viewers may be able to pause and rewind if DVR is enabled, but YouTube says DVR can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers also cannot seek to a point before the stream began. Details are in Turn on DVR on live streams.

Copyright and reused lecture material
Only stream lectures and accompanying audio or visuals you have permission to use in a live broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can result in a placeholder image, interruption, or termination. Even licensed content may be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Consult Copyright issues with live streams and resolve permissions before going live.
Do not assume that owning a copy or having permission to watch a lecture means you have permission to rebroadcast it. If you use material from another rights holder, confirm that the permission covers livestreaming on your channel and any relevant territories or duration.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video Source is not available: Install VLC, matching OBS’s architecture (64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS), then restart OBS.
- A lecture is skipped, missing, or fails to play: Confirm the file still exists at the location added to the playlist, that the media is readable by VLC, and that the playlist entry points to the intended file.
- The lectures play in the wrong order or repeat unpredictably: Reorder the playlist and turn shuffle off if a fixed sequence is required. Confirm Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Playback stops when you switch scenes: Review the VLC source’s visibility behavior. Choose the stop/restart, pause/unpause, or always-play behavior that fits your scene workflow.
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Check that OBS is streaming, that the stream URL and key belong to the intended YouTube stream, and that the channel has livestreaming eligibility. Reset the key in YouTube if it may have been exposed.
- The stream looks unstable or drops: Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback and whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Re-test with representative footage and the encoder settings YouTube recommends for the output format.
- The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Review YouTube’s notice and the rights for every video and audio element. A license does not necessarily prevent interruption if the channel is not allowlisted through Content ID.

Choose based on who will maintain the playback machine or server, how you need to edit and order the lectures, and whether you want to handle restarts yourself. No approach removes the need to have rights to the lecture content or to follow YouTube’s live-stream rules.
