Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can keep a YouTube Live stream running from one repeating video or a playlist without re-encoding, but only when the source files are compatible with FFmpeg’s concat method and YouTube’s ingest requirements. For one file, use FFmpeg’s infinite input loop; for multiple files, use the concat demuxer and stream copy. Neither method converts incompatible codecs, timestamps, or stream layouts for you.
What “without re-encoding” means
FFmpeg stream copy passes encoded packets through without decoding and encoding them. That saves the video and audio from another lossy generation, but it is not a compatibility converter. Copying cannot apply filters, resize, change frame rate, add overlays, or change codecs; those operations require decoding and encoding the affected streams. FFmpeg also notes that stream copy can fail when the output container cannot carry the source streams or required information: FFmpeg: Streamcopy.
The practical distinction is whether your files already have compatible streams, timing, and properties for the chosen output. If they do, packet copying may work. If they do not, use different source files or normalize them by re-encoding; adding -c copy cannot repair a mismatch.
Choose the right loop method
| Source | FFmpeg approach | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| One video | -stream_loop -1 before the input |
Repeat the same file indefinitely. |
| Several videos in order | Concat demuxer, then stream copy | Use when files have compatible streams and timing characteristics. |
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping of an input. The concat demuxer presents a sequence of files as one input, but expects their streams and timing to match appropriately. Consult the concat demuxer documentation and its concat limitations before relying on packet-copy concatenation. In particular, do not assume arbitrary MP4 files will join cleanly just because they share the same extension.

Prepare and inspect your files
Check every input first
Record each file’s video and audio codecs, stream count, dimensions, frame rate, time base, and duration. FFmpeg’s ffprobe documentation describes its media-inspection tool. Check every file, not just the first: a playlist may contain extra audio tracks, different codecs, or different timing characteristics that make stream copy fail or cause a bad transition.
Make the playlist consistent where needed
- Keep the same relevant video and audio stream layout across files.
- Confirm the codecs and timing characteristics are compatible with each other and with the intended output.
- If a file needs resizing, frame-rate conversion, a filter, or a codec change, packet copying alone is not enough. Replace it with a compatible source or re-encode it to a consistent format before streaming.
- Use explicit stream mapping if files contain extra tracks, so you send the intended video and audio rather than relying on automatic selection.
Build a one-file or playlist command
Repeat one video
For a single compatible file, put the loop option before that input. A general command shape is:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy -f flv "RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"
Replace the input path and destination placeholders with your actual values. The example explicitly maps the first video and first audio stream; adjust the mapping if your intended tracks differ. The FLV output muxer is shown as a command shape for an RTMP-family destination, not a guarantee that every source stream is valid for that container or YouTube ingest. A stream key is a secret: do not publish it, commit it to a repository, or leave it exposed in a shared script or log.

Paths with spaces, apostrophes, absolute locations, or restricted files may require escaping or suitable concat options for your system. Confirm the concat demuxer’s safe-path behavior in the official documentation rather than copying a list blindly. Then use the playlist as an input and request stream copy:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i "playlist.txt" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy -f flv "RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"

-stream_loop -1 is placed before the playlist input to repeat the concatenated input. -re reads at native media speed; avoid removing it without understanding the input pacing and ingest behavior. If your setup requires safe paths, keep the playlist and media files in an allowed location and use the documented safe-path rules rather than disabling checks indiscriminately. Test a transition between files, since concat compatibility can look acceptable at the start and still fail at a boundary.
Set up YouTube Live ingest
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. Use the server URL and stream key shown there; follow YouTube’s streaming setup instructions.
- Use RTMPS when available for encrypted transport. Keep the key private and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings against the actual source properties. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, up to 60 fps, a recommended 2-second keyframe interval, and a 4-second maximum. A copied source retains its existing codec, frame rate, bitrate behavior, and keyframe cadence; FFmpeg does not adjust these through
-c copy. - Choose an ingest profile and bitrate compatible with the source. YouTube’s published H.264 figures include 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended at 1080p30, and 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended at 720p30. These are YouTube’s encoder-setting values, not a measured guarantee of the upload capacity your connection needs. Leave network headroom above the stream’s total bitrate.
- Start the command, wait for the preview, and check stream health in Live Control Room. Test representative motion and audio, then watch a file transition before leaving the stream unattended.
If the existing files do not meet the selected ingest profile’s codec, audio, keyframe, or other requirements, choose different source material or transcode. Do not prescribe a bitrate or claim that stream copy fixes the source: it does not.
Keep it running and protect the archive
A terminal command alone is not a 24/7 reliability plan. Run FFmpeg under an operating-system service manager or process supervisor, monitor its exit status, and alert someone if the process stops. The computer still has to remain powered, connected, and able to send the stream; stream copy reduces encoding work, not the need to mux, transmit, and supervise.
YouTube’s archive behavior is a separate concern from whether the live broadcast keeps running. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; it recommends keeping a local backup when the recording matters. See YouTube’s live archive guidance. For a usable replay, record locally or plan shorter live sessions and verify that the local files are actually being written.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg fails to open or mux a stream | The output container or ingest destination cannot accept a source stream or required information. | Inspect codecs and stream layout; use a compatible source or re-encode the incompatible stream. |
| Playlist fails at a file boundary | Inputs differ in stream layout, codec, time base, or timing characteristics. | Compare all files, test transitions, and normalize incompatible inputs before concatenation. |
| YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health problem | Source properties may not match the selected ingest settings, or upload capacity may be insufficient. | Check the current YouTube encoder guidance, source keyframe cadence and audio/video formats, and available upload headroom. |
| Audio or video is missing or the wrong track plays | Automatic stream selection picked an unintended stream, or a source lacks the expected track. | Inspect stream indexes and map the desired tracks explicitly; verify that all playlist entries have them. |
| FFmpeg stops after running for a while | The process exited or the host lost power, connectivity, or supervision. | Check process logs and host/network status; use a supervisor and exit alerts. |
| No YouTube replay appears for a very long stream | Streams exceeding YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold may not be captured. | Keep a local recording or split the broadcast into shorter sessions when an archive is required. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Each slot supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers; it includes 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The computer at home does not have to stay on, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
