Viewers can choose from different playback resolutions on a YouTube live stream because YouTube automatically transcodes the encoder’s incoming feed into multiple formats. That does not mean the stream’s incoming resolution should change each time a loop advances to a different video. For a stable broadcast, set one output resolution and frame rate, then test the loop and monitor stream health.
What “different resolutions” means
There are two separate questions: can viewers select different playback quality, and can the creator change the encoder’s outgoing resolution as the loop moves between files?
- Viewer playback: YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into different output formats so viewers can watch on different devices and networks. The encoder does not need to send a separate feed for each playback quality. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the process.
- Encoder input: The encoder sends a feed at an incoming resolution and frame rate. YouTube Live Control Room detects these by default. YouTube documents manual resolution selection using a custom stream key, but its guidance does not establish changing the incoming resolution file by file within one continuous loop.
So a playlist may contain videos with different dimensions, but do not assume YouTube or the encoder will switch input resolution seamlessly between them. Choose a steady output format for the broadcast and test how the mixed files appear.
Set up a loop in OBS with a steady output
1. Add the file or playlist
- For one repeating video, add an OBS Media Source and enable its loop option.
- For a playlist, add a VLC Video Source, select the files, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this source. OBS describes both options in its Media Sources guide.
2. Set one output resolution and frame rate
In OBS, open Settings > Video and choose the output resolution and frame rate you intend to use throughout the stream. Pick a format suited to the source material and your upload connection; consistency is practical guidance for a continuous encoder feed, not a YouTube rule requiring every playlist file to match.

If playlist items have different aspect ratios or dimensions, preview transitions and check for black bars, cropping, unexpected scaling, or changes in sharpness. Consider preparing the videos to a consistent canvas before adding them if the differences are distracting.
3. Configure YouTube and connect OBS
YouTube defines an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live stream, then enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the encoder. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not show it in a recording or share it publicly.

Use automatic resolution detection unless you have a specific reason to set resolution manually. YouTube says manual selection requires a custom stream key with manual settings enabled under Stream Resolution. Details and other stream controls are in Manage live stream settings.
4. Choose a bitrate and test before going public
Bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, and the upload capacity available to the encoder. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance includes these incoming-feed recommendations:

These are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not guarantees of a particular viewer experience. The complete table includes other resolutions and codec-dependent ranges; check YouTube’s current encoder settings before choosing settings for another format. Prefer a reliable stream over a higher bitrate your connection cannot sustain.
Before publishing, test privately or unlisted with audio and motion similar to the planned stream. Watch the loop end and restart, inspect transitions between differently sized files, listen for audio gaps, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. Continue monitoring stream health during the broadcast.

Common problems and fixes
- Viewers do not see every expected quality option: YouTube creates playback formats from the incoming stream; the available options are not separate encoder feeds. Check the incoming stream and allow YouTube to process it, then verify playback on the intended device.
- Black bars, cropping, or abrupt visual changes at playlist transitions: The files may have different dimensions or aspect ratios. Test each transition and standardize the files or adjust the scene layout before going live.
- The playlist stops instead of repeating: Check that looping is enabled on the Media Source, or that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source. Confirm VLC is installed when using that source.
- Stream health reports instability: Check whether the encoder bitrate exceeds what the upload connection can sustain, and use YouTube’s recommendations for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. Test again and monitor health before making the stream public.
- Manual resolution settings are unavailable or unclear: YouTube’s documented manual workflow uses a custom stream key and manual settings under Stream Resolution. Otherwise, leave detection automatic.
