How to Stop Viewers Rewinding a YouTube Podcast Live Stream—and Manage Its Replay

Turn off YouTube DVR to prevent live viewers from seeking backward on supported streams. The setting does not remove the finished podcast archive or fix encoder restarts.

If viewers are rewinding your podcast while it is still live, turn off Enable DVR in YouTube Studio’s stream settings, when that option is supported. This prevents viewers from seeking back during the broadcast; it does not stop YouTube from making a recording available after the stream ends. If the broadcast itself is restarting, DVR is not the fix: that is a separate problem.

First, tell live rewind from a post-stream replay

“Replay” can mean two different things on YouTube. During a live broadcast, DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue watching. After the broadcast, YouTube may make an archived video available on the channel. The DVR setting controls the first behavior, not whether the later archive exists. See YouTube’s DVR guidance and live-stream archive guidance.

  • If viewers are going back to earlier moments while the podcast is live, consider disabling DVR.
  • If you mean the live broadcast or encoder stops and starts again, disabling DVR is not an established fix. YouTube’s documentation cited here covers DVR and archiving, not diagnosis of encoder restarts.
  • If you mean the finished podcast appears as a video after the broadcast, manage the archive separately; DVR does not remove it.

Turn off DVR for a supported stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
  2. Open the Stream or Manage tab, then open Stream settings.
  3. Under Additional settings, turn off Enable DVR.

YouTube says you can change DVR while live, but the change affects viewers who start playing the stream after you make it. It may not alter the experience for someone already watching. The setting is not supported for webcam and mobile streaming, so do not assume the toggle will be available or effective with those methods. YouTube’s live-stream settings help also distinguishes stream settings by streaming method.

Decide whether to keep the finished podcast replay

If you want viewers to watch the podcast after it ends, keep the archive. If you do not want it available, change its visibility or delete it from YouTube Studio’s Content page. These archive actions are separate from disabling live DVR.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Plan for streams near or over 12 hours

YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream that is less than 12 hours long. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If retaining a complete recording matters, make a local recording as a backup rather than relying on YouTube to archive a very long broadcast. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR limitations.

Do not use latency as a rewind control

Latency is a separate setting. Lower latency can make buffering more likely, but changing latency is not YouTube’s documented way to stop viewers seeking backward. Choose latency for the interaction and playback tradeoff you need; use DVR settings for live seeking. See YouTube’s latency guidance.

Troubleshoot the symptom you actually have

  • Viewers can rewind during the live podcast: Disable DVR if your streaming method supports it. The change applies to viewers who start playback afterward.
  • The DVR option is missing or does not work: Check whether you are streaming by webcam or mobile; disabling DVR is unsupported for those methods.
  • The ended podcast is still available: Manage the archived video’s visibility or delete it in YouTube Studio’s Content page; changing DVR alone will not remove the archive.
  • YouTube did not save a very long stream: Streams over 12 hours may not be captured. For future broadcasts where the full recording matters, keep a local recording.
  • The encoder or broadcast restarts: Treat this as a separate encoder or connection issue. DVR and archive controls do not identify or resolve its cause.
