Common Live Streaming Challenges and How to Fix Them

Dropped frames, viewer buffering, and choppy output have different causes. Learn how to diagnose each one and choose the right fix.

If a live stream is struggling, first identify where the problem appears: OBS may be dropping frames on the way to YouTube, viewers may be buffering even though your outgoing stream is healthy, or your computer may be unable to render and encode smoothly. Those symptoms have different causes—and different fixes. Check OBS’s stats before changing settings.

Diagnose the symptom before changing settings

“Lag” can describe network drops, playback buffering, or choppy output from an overloaded computer. In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the counters while the problem is happening. Look at what is affected: the stream leaving OBS, the picture OBS is rendering, or playback on viewers’ devices.

What you observe Likely area to investigate First step
OBS’s dropped-frames count increases Connection from your computer to the ingest server, or bitrate too high for a stable connection Try a different ingest server and lower bitrate
OBS shows no dropped frames, but viewers report buffering Viewer networks and devices, stream bitrate, resolution, or platform playback options Ask whether it affects one viewer or many; check platform guidance
OBS output is choppy or reports encoding overload Computer resources, especially GPU capacity for rendering and encoding Reduce rendering load, then lower output demands if needed

Fix dropped frames between OBS and the platform

OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guide says such problems are typically outside OBS Studio’s control. The path can include your computer, home network, ISP route, and the platform’s ingest server, so a speed-test result alone does not prove the live connection is stable.

Lower bitrate to a sustainable level

Compare your configured bitrate with your stable upload capacity, not just a brief peak. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. That is guidance, not a guarantee or a platform-independent rule: YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec, and the encoder must also be able to sustain the setting.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Change bitrate in OBS under Settings > Output when using Advanced output mode, or Settings > Output > Streaming in Simple mode. Make one change at a time, stream a test, and see whether the dropped-frames count still rises. Stay within the platform’s applicable bitrate recommendations.

Test the ingest route and network

  1. In OBS, try another available ingest server, then repeat the test at the same settings. If the issue clears, the original route may have been the problem.
  2. If practical, test another streaming service. A problem on only one service points toward a service-specific route or configuration; trouble across services suggests a broader connection issue.
  3. If you use Wi-Fi, try a wired connection. An Ethernet cable can reduce wireless instability, but it cannot fix every ISP route, ingest, or software problem.
  4. Restart your existing modem and router. If instability continues or you cannot identify the cause, contact your ISP before replacing a modem, router, cable, network card, switch, or extender.
  5. Check whether a VPN, security software, network-optimization software, or outdated network driver is interfering. If you temporarily change security settings to diagnose the problem, restore protection afterward.

Separate viewer buffering from broadcaster connection trouble

If OBS’s outbound stats look healthy but some viewers see buffering, do not assume the connection from your computer is the cause. Viewers use different locations, devices, and internet connections. Ask whether one person or many are affected, and whether they see buffering on another device or network.

A high bitrate can make playback harder for viewers whose connections cannot keep up. If buffering is widespread, consider lowering bitrate or resolution while staying within the platform’s published recommendations. Transcoding, when a platform makes it available for a stream, can let viewers choose a lower playback quality; availability varies, so do not assume every viewer has that option.

Resolve choppy output and encoding overload

Encoding overload is a computer-resource problem, often involving GPU capacity. A game can look acceptable on your monitor while using so much GPU that OBS has too little capacity to composite scenes and produce the stream smoothly. OBS’s encoding guidance recommends reducing the workload rather than treating this as a network failure.

  1. Cap the game’s frame rate. An uncapped game can consume GPU capacity OBS needs. Set a frame-rate limit in the game or its graphics settings.
  2. Reduce game graphics demands. Lower graphics settings if the GPU remains heavily loaded.
  3. Simplify OBS scenes. Remove unnecessary sources and reduce expensive filters, browser sources, or other elements that add rendering work.
  4. Reduce output demands if needed. Lower output resolution, or change from 60 fps to 30 fps if the computer cannot sustain the higher frame rate.
  5. Retest and check Stats. Make one adjustment at a time so you can see whether rendering or encoding performance improves.

Lowering resolution or frame rate can reduce workload, but it also changes what viewers receive. Use the least disruptive setting that lets the system produce a stable stream.

Set YouTube encoder settings for the actual stream

There is no single bitrate that fits every resolution, frame rate, codec, connection, and encoder. YouTube’s published table, accessed October 4, 2026, recommends 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps with AV1 or H.265 (HEVC), and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps with H.264. These are recommendations for those specific combinations—not a guarantee that an uplink or computer can sustain them. Check YouTube’s current guidance before going live.

Run a representative preflight

YouTube advises testing before a live stream. Do not test only with a static scene if the real broadcast will have movement, music, speech, or several active sources. OBS’s stats and YouTube’s stream-health indicators can help distinguish a connection issue from an encoding problem while you still have time to adjust.

Common troubleshooting mistakes

  • Changing several settings at once: You will not know which change helped. Adjust one variable, test, and record the result.
  • Assuming every buffering report means dropped frames: Check OBS stats first; viewer playback problems can exist without broadcaster-side drops.
  • Raising bitrate to “improve quality” during instability: A bitrate the connection cannot sustain can worsen dropped frames.
  • Buying hardware before checking the route: Try a different ingest server, a wired connection, and a restart of existing network equipment. Ask your ISP if the fault remains unclear.
  • Disabling security tools and leaving them off: Use any such change only as a temporary diagnostic check and restore protections afterward.

Copyright and channel-policy checks for prerecorded streams

A stable stream is not automatically a permissible or eligible broadcast. Before looping prerecorded material, confirm that you have the rights to the video, music, and other included content, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies. Reusing content you did not create or do not have permission to use can lead to claims or other restrictions; an always-on schedule does not establish ownership or make reused content eligible for monetization. Check YouTube’s policies for the specific channel and material rather than assuming that a stream remaining online means it complies.
