Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To stream a prerecorded playlist to YouTube from an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) virtual machine in India, create an eligible VM in your tenancy’s home region, install FFmpeg for its operating system, and send the playlist output to the event-specific server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Use the RTMPS address YouTube provides when your FFmpeg build supports it, test the incoming preview, then start the event from YouTube. OCI capacity and Always Free eligibility depend on your account and region; confirm them in the Console before creating a VM.
What you are setting up
The VM runs FFmpeg, which reads prerecorded files and encodes or remuxes them into a live feed sent to YouTube. YouTube supplies the ingest address and stream key for the live event. Your computer does not need to remain on once the VM is running, but you are responsible for keeping the VM, playlist files, and FFmpeg process available.
OCI Media Streams is a separate managed service for packaging and distributing video; it is not required for this direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube workflow. Oracle’s Media Services overview describes that service.
Check YouTube and OCI prerequisites first
Confirm YouTube live access
Your channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take at least 24 hours, so enable it and schedule a test ahead of time. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance lists 16 as the minimum age for live streaming. Check the current requirements at YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.

Confirm OCI home region, free eligibility, and capacity
Oracle’s Always Free compute eligibility is tied to the tenancy’s home region. In the OCI Console, confirm the home region and check that the selected shape is marked eligible for Always Free before provisioning. Oracle also warns that temporary capacity shortages can prevent instance creation. A region in India is not necessarily your tenancy’s home region, and the available evidence does not establish that any particular India region or shape will be available for your account.
Oracle lists up to two VM.Standard.E2.1.Micro instances per tenancy and, for VM.Standard.A1.Flex, monthly Always Free allowances of 3,000 OCPU hours and 18,000 GB hours. Oracle describes the A1 allowance as equivalent to 4 OCPUs and 24 GB of memory for Always Free tenancies. These are conditional account allowances, not a promise that a particular instance is available or that all usage will be free. Check your current usage, shape eligibility, and billing details in the Console and Oracle Cloud Free Tier information before deployment.
Choose a VM for the actual workload
Compare shapes available to your tenancy by CPU architecture, memory, home-region availability, and whether FFmpeg must encode video or can pass through already compatible media. A playlist stream can have very different resource needs depending on resolution, codecs, filters, and whether each source file needs transcoding. The cited OCI information does not establish a universally suitable India shape, current capacity, or a current price for paid compute, so do not select a shape on the assumption that a specific configuration will always be free or available.

Create the VM and install FFmpeg
- Provision the instance. In the OCI Console, open Compute and create an instance in the eligible home region. Select an operating system image and a shape that is currently available and suitable for your workload. Review the estimated charges and free-tier eligibility shown for your tenancy before confirming.
- Connect to the guest OS. Use the connection method and credentials configured for your selected image. Keep SSH access restricted to the addresses and users that need it; do not expose administrative access broadly.
- Install FFmpeg using that OS’s current package instructions. The package name and installation command depend on the image and its repositories. For example, an apt-based system may use
sudo apt install ffmpeg, but that is an OS-dependent example, not an OCI-specific guarantee. Check the official instructions for your chosen guest OS and verify the installed build and supported protocols before relying on it. - Verify the installation. Run
ffmpeg -versionand inspect the build information. Confirm that the build supports the input formats, codecs, and RTMPS transport your workflow needs. Package availability and build options can vary by image and repository.
A Google Cloud documentation example also uses sudo apt install ffmpeg on an apt-based environment; it illustrates the package-manager approach, not a guarantee about an OCI image. See Google Cloud’s video-encoding tutorial.

Prepare a rights-cleared playlist
Upload or otherwise make the media files accessible to the VM, then prepare a playlist in the format your FFmpeg workflow will read. Check that filenames, paths, and playlist entries match exactly, including capitalization where the filesystem is case-sensitive. Confirm that the VM has enough storage for the media and that the account used by FFmpeg can read every file.
Only include video and audio you have the rights to stream and, if you enable archiving, the rights to make available in the resulting archive. YouTube’s terms require content providers to have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live content, including applicable music rights, and to comply with relevant laws and rules. A publicly accessible playlist or a copy you can play personally is not, by itself, permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service and obtain the necessary licenses or permissions before streaming.

Create the YouTube event and protect its stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the event you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder workflow explains the event controls and incoming preview: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key from the stream settings. These are event/encoder connection details; use the values YouTube displays rather than guessing or reusing an address from another event.
- Keep the key secret. Treat it as a password. Do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, shared documents, or shell commands that may be saved in shell history. Restrict access to configuration files, logs, process information, and the VM account that can read the key. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration.
Choose RTMPS or RTMP
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which protects the RTMP connection with TLS. In YouTube’s stream settings, use the lock control to obtain the RTMPS address for the event. Do not convert an RTMP URL to RTMPS by manually changing its prefix or port; use the address YouTube provides and confirm your installed FFmpeg build supports it. YouTube’s guidance also describes port 443 as a troubleshooting option where appropriate. Compare the transport choices before testing:
| Transport | What it means | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | RTMP protected by TLS. | Preferred when the event provides an RTMPS URL and the FFmpeg build supports it. |
| RTMP | Unencrypted RTMP transport. | Use only when required by your setup; YouTube recommends RTMPS instead. |
YouTube also supports HLS ingest for use cases such as HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP. It adds complexity and is unnecessary for a basic playlist stream unless your format or delivery requirements call for it. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

Configure FFmpeg for the playlist and YouTube ingest
FFmpeg settings depend on the playlist format, input codecs, output codecs, installed build, and the exact ingest URL. The available documentation here does not validate a complete FFmpeg command for this setup, so use the current FFmpeg documentation for your chosen demuxer and output options rather than copying a supposedly universal command. In particular, decide whether the media can be passed through or needs re-encoding, confirm the playlist demuxer’s requirements, and use the event’s actual RTMPS or RTMP URL with the protected stream key.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Ensure the playlist references files using paths available on the VM, and test that FFmpeg can open every entry.
- Choose input and output options that match the actual media and YouTube ingest requirements. Do not assume one codec or playlist format fits every channel or file collection.
- Keep the stream key out of public examples and reusable scripts. Use a restricted configuration mechanism and review shell history, logs, and process visibility for accidental exposure.
- Plan for the VM process to remain running for the intended stream duration, and monitor both the FFmpeg process and YouTube’s incoming preview.
Test the feed, then go live
- Start FFmpeg with the prepared playlist and the event’s ingest details.
- In Live Control Room, wait for YouTube to show the incoming preview. Check that video and audio are present, that playback is stable, and that the expected event is selected.
- When the preview is correct, use YouTube’s control-room event controls to start the live broadcast. Starting the encoder feed and making the event public are separate actions.
- When finished, stop the encoder and end the event in Live Control Room. Confirm the event has ended before shutting down or deleting the VM.
Troubleshoot common failures
The VM cannot be created
Check that you selected the tenancy’s home region for an Always Free shape, that the shape is currently eligible, and that capacity is available. Oracle notes that a temporary shortage may block provisioning. If capacity is unavailable, check the Console again or consider an available shape or region only if it meets your account’s free-eligibility and workload requirements.
FFmpeg is missing or a protocol is unsupported
Confirm the package installation instructions for the selected OS image, inspect ffmpeg -version, and check the build’s supported protocols and codecs. A package can install successfully without supporting every input format or transport needed by your playlist.
YouTube does not show an incoming preview
Check that you copied the server URL and stream key from the selected event, that the key has not been reset, and that the VM can make the required outbound connection. Confirm that FFmpeg is still running and that the playlist files are readable. If you use RTMPS, verify that you used the RTMPS URL shown by YouTube and that the installed build supports it; YouTube’s RTMPS help includes troubleshooting guidance, including the port 443 option where appropriate.

The video or audio is missing, or playback stops
Verify the playlist entries and media paths, then test the source files individually. Check FFmpeg’s output for input, codec, or file-read errors, and inspect the YouTube preview before starting the event. If the stream disconnects, check both the VM process and the ingest connection; YouTube’s automatic event controls do not replace monitoring your own encoder.
The stream key may have leaked
Reset the key in Live Control Room, replace it in the VM’s protected configuration, and check any scripts, logs, shell history, or shared files where it may have appeared. Do not resume using a key that has been exposed.
Or let it run in the cloud
