To run a 24/7 YouTube channel at a chosen resolution, send YouTube one continuous live feed from an encoder or cloud playout service. Set that feed’s resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate to match your video and upload capacity. YouTube then transcodes the incoming stream into multiple playback formats, so viewers can choose from the options available to their device and connection; setting your encoder to 1080p does not force everyone to watch at 1080p.
For documentaries or other prerecorded programming, the key decision is not just picture quality: it is how to keep the feed running, recover from interruptions and preserve a separate archive. The instructions and figures below reflect YouTube Help guidance checked on October 3, 2026; YouTube’s pages do not display publication dates, and technical recommendations can change.
How resolution works on a 24/7 YouTube channel
Your encoder sends one live ingest feed to YouTube. You choose its resolution and frame rate, along with a supported video codec and bitrate. YouTube transcodes the feed into multiple output formats for viewers. That means you configure the quality of the signal you send, not a single playback resolution that every viewer must receive. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection as the default. If you need to set the ingest resolution manually, create or select a custom stream key in YouTube Studio and enable “Turn on manual settings” under stream resolution. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance says: “YouTube will automatically detect which encoder settings you chose.”

Choose an ingest resolution and bitrate
Choose a resolution and frame rate your source, encoder and sustained upload connection can support. Higher resolution and frame rate require higher recommended ingest bitrates. For a mostly static documentary slate or slow-moving footage, 30 fps may be sufficient; fast motion can benefit from 60 fps if the source and connection support it. These are practical trade-offs, not guarantees of visual quality.
The table shows YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate in Mbps for each listed resolution and frame rate, by codec. These are recommendations, not guaranteed quality outcomes or proof that your connection can sustain the feed. YouTube’s settings page also lists minimum settings, so check its current guidance before configuring your encoder.

| 480p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s recommended encoder ingest bitrates, verified October 3, 2026. The guidance differentiates H.264 from AV1/H.265; choose a codec your encoder and workflow support rather than assuming every setup can use every option. YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps.
Set up the encoder and protect the connection
YouTube’s general live encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest, with RTMPS recommended; H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; CBR bitrate encoding; a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds; and AAC or MP3 audio. HDR has additional requirements, so check the dedicated guidance if you plan to use it; do not assume AV1 HDR support.

- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check the current status and setup in YouTube Studio before scheduling a launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Choose the ingest format. Select a source-appropriate resolution and frame rate, then use YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate recommendation. Leave automatic resolution detection enabled unless you have a reason to use a custom stream key and manual settings.
- Configure the stream destination. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into your encoder. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it, as YouTube recommends.
- Test sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the total outgoing stream bitrate. Include a backup feed in that total if you use one. Run an upload test under realistic network conditions; a speed-test result is not a guarantee of uninterrupted performance. See YouTube’s network guidance.
- Run a representative preflight. Test with the movement and audio the channel will actually use. Check the Live Control Room preview, stream-health messages and access from intended viewer devices. If you have a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it will work.
Plan a continuous programming workflow
YouTube identifies software encoders, standalone hardware encoders and cloud tools among the available approaches. OBS is described by YouTube as free, open-source streaming software; Gyre is listed as a cloud tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos. Those listings are not an independent comparison or endorsement.
- Local software encoder: Useful when you want control over the playlist, encoding and live output on a computer. The computer, encoder and network connection must remain available for the stream to continue.
- Standalone hardware encoder: A possible option for a dedicated encoding workflow. It is not a requirement for continuous streaming; choose any appliance only after checking its supported resolution, codec, protocol and operating needs.
- Cloud playout: A service can play uploaded prerecorded video and send the live feed without relying on a home computer staying on. Check that the service matches the channel’s resolution needs and recovery workflow.
Whichever approach you choose, keep an eye on stream health and have a plan for interruptions. Preflight checks reduce avoidable surprises but do not guarantee uninterrupted service.

Protect the archive and viewer experience
Transmission and retention are separate problems. YouTube says a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. If the program needs a complete archive, record a local backup rather than relying on one continuous YouTube event. Check YouTube’s current guidance on live stream archiving and DVR.
Latency is another trade-off. YouTube says 4K/2160p streams do not offer its low-latency option and are optimized for quality at normal latency. If real-time audience interaction is important, weigh latency against the possibility of more playback buffering at lower-latency settings. See encoder settings and manage live stream settings.

Copyright and channel-policy checks for documentaries
Before building a 24/7 loop, confirm that you have the rights needed to broadcast every film, clip, soundtrack, image and other included material on YouTube. A video being publicly available does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. A continuous loop does not remove copyright or other YouTube policy obligations. Review the rights for the complete playlist, not just the main documentary, and keep records of licenses or permissions.
Also consider whether the channel offers viewers meaningful programming rather than simply repeating material without context or added value. YouTube’s monetization decisions are separate from whether a stream can technically run; do not assume that continuous availability or a particular ingest resolution makes a channel eligible for monetization.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
Monthly access is $9.99 per month. The service plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
