How to Set Up a Raspberry Pi YouTube Live Stream to Restart After Reboot

Use systemd to launch a Raspberry Pi YouTube encoder at boot, then test separately for recovery from camera, process, and network failures.

To restart a Raspberry Pi YouTube stream after a reboot, run its encoder as a systemd service and enable that service at boot. For recovery when the encoder exits or the camera or network fails, configure and test restart behavior separately: boot startup alone does not handle every runtime failure.

What you need before configuring the Pi

  • A Raspberry Pi with a working camera or other video source, a supported encoder, and a reliable network connection.
  • A YouTube stream created in YouTube Studio, with its stream URL and stream key.
  • An encoder command or script that works when run manually. A service cannot fix a broken capture source, invalid command, or unavailable network.

The exact camera stack and encoder depend on your Pi model and video source. One documented Pi 4 example uses Raspberry Pi OS Lite 64-bit (Bookworm), FFmpeg, v4l-utils, and rpicam-apps; treat that as an example configuration, not a compatibility guarantee for every board or camera. See the YouTube-Pi4-StreamMachine project.

Create or select the YouTube stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
  2. Create a stream or select one you already use. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the encoder.
  3. When your encoder supports it, use the RTMPS URL provided in Live Control Room. YouTube notes that the ordinary RTMP URL may appear by default; follow its RTMPS instructions.

YouTube says a returning stream may load earlier settings, including its key. Confirm the URL and key in the selected stream before starting the encoder. The key grants publishing access: keep it out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, and logs. Store it in a local configuration file with restricted access, and exclude that file from version control.

Choose settings the Pi and connection can sustain

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). The recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table rather than assuming one bitrate suits every Pi.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Measure upload capacity: choose a setting your connection can sustain, with headroom for normal variation.
  • Test representative content: include audio and movement similar to the actual stream. A static image is not a useful test of motion-heavy footage.
  • Choose the encoding path deliberately: copying a compatible source can reduce Pi workload; transcoding can be necessary to produce a supported codec or target resolution, but requires more processing. The suitable choice depends on the source and Pi.
  • Check the source type: local camera capture and an IP/RTSP source require different capture inputs. Confirm the source is available to the service user, not just to your interactive login.

Run the encoder with systemd at boot

First run the encoder command manually and confirm that YouTube receives it. Then create a systemd unit for that known-working command or its wrapper script. The following is a template, not a ready-to-run encoder command: substitute the real executable, arguments, user, and working directory for your setup.

[Unit]
Description=YouTube live encoder
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=YOUR_PI_USER
WorkingDirectory=/absolute/path/to/your/script
ExecStart=/absolute/path/to/encoder YOUR_ENCODER_ARGUMENTS
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Save the unit, for example as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-live.service. Use absolute paths; ensure the named user can access the camera, script, configuration, and any files the encoder needs. If your setup requires environment variables or a configuration file, provide them securely through the service configuration rather than exposing the stream key in a public script.

The Pi 4 project documents this general enable-and-start workflow and local key configuration, but its specific files and commands are project-specific: YouTube-Pi4-StreamMachine.

Distinguish reboot startup from failure recovery

systemctl enable configures a service to launch during boot; it does not prove that a stream will recover from every failure. The example unit above uses Restart=on-failure to ask systemd to restart a process that exits unsuccessfully. It cannot guarantee recovery if the camera remains unavailable, the network is down, the encoder exits successfully despite a failed stream, or YouTube rejects the connection. Those cases may require retry logic or a supervisor suited to the encoder and source.

A community YouTube-AutoEncoder project shows an FFmpeg/systemd recovery implementation for camera loss, encoder failure, network interruption, and host reboot. Treat its lifecycle design as an implementation example, not a universal configuration. Verify that your own source becomes available again and that the encoder retries successfully.

Test the reboot and monitor the stream

  1. With the service running, confirm the encoder is connected and inspect the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.
  2. Check the Pi logs with sudo journalctl -u youtube-live.service -f while the stream runs.
  3. Reboot the Pi during a planned test: sudo reboot.
  4. After it returns, check sudo systemctl status youtube-live.service and the journal, then verify the stream in Live Control Room. A successful service state alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving usable audio and video.
  5. Repeat a test after changing the unit, encoder arguments, camera, network, or key. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.

YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That is YouTube’s stated archive rule; it does not guarantee that a stream interrupted by a reboot resumes the same broadcast or is archived in every circumstance. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshoot common restart problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Service does not start after reboot Unit was not enabled, systemd was not reloaded after a change, or the unit has an invalid path or setting. Run sudo systemctl is-enabled youtube-live.service, then inspect sudo systemctl status youtube-live.service and the journal. Reload systemd after unit edits and enable the service.
Service starts, but no picture reaches YouTube Bad capture input, camera access permissions, invalid encoder arguments, or incorrect stream URL/key. Run the encoder manually as the service user, check camera availability and logs, and verify the selected stream’s URL and key in Live Control Room.
Stream starts but fails when the network drops The process may not exit, or a simple restart policy may not retry the connection in the way the encoder needs. Inspect encoder logs and test an actual interruption. Add suitable connection retry behavior or a supervisor, then verify recovery rather than inferring it from boot configuration.
Service repeatedly restarts The command may fail immediately, the source may not yet be available, or the user may lack access to required files or devices. Use journalctl to find the first error; confirm absolute paths, permissions, source readiness, and encoder arguments before adjusting delays or retry logic.
Unstable video or dropped frames Encoding settings may exceed the Pi’s processing capacity or the connection’s sustained upload rate. Test with representative audio and motion, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as needed, and compare against YouTube’s current encoder guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud
