How to Set Up a 24/7 YouTube Stream on DigitalOcean

A 24/7 YouTube stream on DigitalOcean combines an always-on Droplet process with YouTube’s encoder URL and stream key. Learn when to use FFmpeg, OBS or SRS, what YouTube requires, and where setup limits matter.

Yes. A 24/7 YouTube stream on DigitalOcean needs two pieces: an always-on Droplet running software that generates or relays video, and a YouTube Live encoder destination configured with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. For a prerecorded documentary loop, FFmpeg can read a prepared file and repeat it with -stream_loop -1. You do not need Nginx-RTMP just to send FFmpeg directly to YouTube.

Choose the right pipeline for your documentary stream

A prerecorded loop and a live production are different jobs. For a finished documentary or playlist, FFmpeg can play media from the Droplet and publish the output to YouTube. For a live camera or desktop production, the source is a capture workflow; OBS is commonly used for that, but DigitalOcean’s OBS example sends to an Nginx-RTMP server rather than documenting OBS publishing directly to YouTube.

Option Best fit What it does Trade-offs
FFmpeg on a Droplet Looping prepared video with a simple pipeline Reads a media file and can repeat it indefinitely using -stream_loop -1. Requires command-line setup and attention to media compatibility, logs, restart behavior, and stream health.
OBS Desktop capture or a production workflow with a GUI Captures or produces a stream and can send it to a custom RTMP destination. Desktop capture generally depends on the workstation and GUI; DigitalOcean’s tutorial shows OBS sending to a self-hosted RTMP server, not the final YouTube destination.
SRS Marketplace image A media-server layer with broader protocol or management needs DigitalOcean documents support for RTMP, SRT, WebRTC, HLS, HTTP-FLV, authentication, restreaming, recording, virtual streams, and FFmpeg transcoding. Adds a server stack to configure, secure, and maintain; the documentation does not establish performance for a particular workload.

DigitalOcean’s Nginx-RTMP tutorial is useful for understanding FFmpeg and OBS workflows, but Nginx-RTMP is not mandatory for direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube publishing. The SRS listing documents capabilities, not independently tested performance. Its 4 GB Droplet is an API creation example, not a universal sizing recommendation. See DigitalOcean’s Nginx-RTMP tutorial and SRS documentation.

Meet YouTube Live’s requirements before configuring the server

YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Check current eligibility and rules in YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and encoder setup guidance.

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
  2. Create or schedule a live stream, then locate the stream settings.
  3. Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. Treat the stream key like a password: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories, or logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

Set up a prerecorded loop from a DigitalOcean Droplet

1. Create an always-on host

Create a DigitalOcean Droplet in a region appropriate for your operation and upload or otherwise place your documentary media on it. The Droplet needs to remain powered on and have enough CPU, memory, disk, and network capacity for the chosen workflow. The sources do not establish a current price, bandwidth allowance, or workload-specific Droplet size, so estimate those from your actual codec, resolution, bitrate, whether you transcode, and whether you run concurrent streams.

2. Install and verify FFmpeg

Install FFmpeg using a method supported by the Droplet’s operating system, then verify that the executable is available before you attempt a long-running stream. DigitalOcean’s tutorial demonstrates FFmpeg sending a prepared file and documents -stream_loop -1 for repeating it. Package names and installation steps vary by operating-system version, so use the instructions for the image you actually deployed rather than assuming a tutorial command applies unchanged.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

3. Build the FFmpeg output destination

Use the YouTube server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room as the destination in your FFmpeg publishing command. Keep the key private; avoid embedding it in a script that is readable by other users or committed to source control. Confirm that your chosen input format and output settings are accepted by YouTube’s current encoder guidance. This is the architecture, not a universal copy-and-paste command: exact codecs and flags depend on the source media and whether you are copying streams or transcoding.

4. Loop the file and observe the stream

Use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option to repeat the prepared media indefinitely, then publish the output to YouTube. Open the Live Control Room and confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy signal before making the stream public. A continuously running command in a terminal is not, by itself, an unattended production setup: the cited DigitalOcean material does not provide a complete current systemd service, alerting, reconnect, key-rotation, storage, or failure-recovery recipe for direct YouTube publishing.

When an RTMP server or OBS makes sense

Use an RTMP server when you need an intermediate ingest point or a workflow that depends on its server features; do not add one solely because you are publishing a file through FFmpeg to YouTube. DigitalOcean’s tutorial configures OBS as a custom RTMP service for sending to the reader’s own Nginx-RTMP server. That example is not the same as configuring OBS’s destination as YouTube’s server URL and stream key.

SRS may suit a more involved media service because DigitalOcean lists multiple protocols, authentication, restreaming, recording, virtual streams, and transcoding. Those capabilities bring additional setup and maintenance decisions. DigitalOcean’s SRS catalog page was generated on 13 March 2024, so check the current Marketplace listing and software version before relying on version-specific steps.

Plan for continuity, cost, and YouTube policy

A Droplet lets the process run without leaving your home computer on, but it is rented infrastructure with an ongoing hosting cost. No current Droplet price or bandwidth allowance is established here. Estimate the cost and capacity against your intended resolution, bitrate, transcoding load, region, and concurrency; the 4 GB SRS API example is not enough evidence to select a plan.

A 24/7 schedule does not exempt a channel from YouTube rules. Live content remains subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and YouTube may restrict live streaming. Its current guidance also states a limit of up to 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key. Review YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and policies before running continuous programming. For documentaries, confirm you have the rights to the footage, music, narration, and other material, and do not assume that looping content satisfies YouTube’s monetization or reused-content requirements.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

  • YouTube does not show an incoming signal: check that the encoder uses the current server URL and stream key from the correct Live Control Room event; verify the process is running and can reach YouTube.
  • The stream starts but stops when the terminal closes: the process was tied to that session. A proper unattended service and monitoring setup is needed; the cited DigitalOcean tutorial is not a complete process-supervision recipe.
  • The file plays but the output is rejected or unstable: inspect the input media’s codec and output configuration against YouTube’s current encoder requirements. Do not assume every file can be passed through without conversion.
  • The stream fails after a key change: update the encoder’s stored key in a secure configuration and restart it; replace any key that may have been exposed.
  • The Droplet is overloaded or playback is unreliable: determine whether FFmpeg is transcoding, how many streams run concurrently, and the media’s resolution and bitrate before increasing resources. No single Droplet size is established as suitable for every workload.
  • A scheduled stream cannot be enabled: check channel verification, age eligibility, first-time activation delay, and any live-stream restriction in YouTube Studio.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a looping prerecorded YouTube channel rather than managing a server, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing needs to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. The same product is on every plan; billing options include a day, week, month, 6 months, or year, and you can cancel any time. Storage is 10 GB per slot, pooled across active slots; five or more slots can be discussed with support. Try it with the StreamNeo free first-day signup.
