To stream a playlist of prerecorded videos to YouTube Live from a DigitalOcean Droplet, run FFmpeg inside a Docker container, give it an ordered list of compatible media files, and configure it with the YouTube ingest URL and stream key. YouTube’s first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable the channel before launch. The workflow below explains the setup while flagging the Docker and FFmpeg details you must validate for your own files and image.
How the setup works
The basic path has three parts: a DigitalOcean Droplet supplies an always-available server, Docker runs FFmpeg in an isolated environment, and FFmpeg reads your ordered playlist and sends one continuous live output to YouTube. You do not need an intermediate media server for a direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube workflow.
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can read a sequence of files from a text list. The files must be compatible with the demuxer’s requirements; a playlist is not automatically seamless merely because its filenames are in order. The sources for this setup do not provide a tested Docker image, Compose file, or end-to-end command, so treat the container and command details below as an implementation outline to validate with your chosen image and media.
Prepare YouTube Live and the stream key
- Enable live streaming on the channel. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Do this well before a planned broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Copy the provided stream URL and stream key into the FFmpeg configuration you will use in the container.
- Protect the stream key. It is a credential that allows an encoder to publish to your channel. Do not put it in a public repository, image, or command history; use a private configuration mechanism and restrict access to it.
- For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview. Once YouTube shows the encoder preview, click Go live in Live Control Room. Starting FFmpeg alone does not necessarily make a scheduled event public.
Build and validate the playlist
Organize the files on the Droplet
Upload only videos you have the rights to stream. Keep media and the concat list in a directory that you can mount read-only into the container. Confirm the container user can read both. A read-only mount reduces the chance that the streaming process changes source files.

Create an ordered concat-demuxer list
Make a plain-text list in the order you want the videos played, using paths that FFmpeg can resolve in the container. FFmpeg documents the concat demuxer and its list syntax in the FFmpeg Formats documentation. Validate the list against that documentation and test the actual files: the concat demuxer has stream and format compatibility requirements, so mismatched codecs, time bases, or stream layouts can cause errors or awkward transitions.
Do not assume that a sequence of files will behave like a fully edited single program. Test the beginning, transitions, and end of the playlist, including audio continuity. If the playlist must repeat, configure and verify looping behavior in the FFmpeg invocation you select; the exact command depends on the chosen image, FFmpeg build, media, and desired output.

Choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder-settings help lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every FFmpeg build or input file supports every combination. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
H.264 bitrate examples
The following are YouTube Help’s recommended H.264 bitrate figures; its publication year is not stated. YouTube distinguishes the minimum from the recommended value.

| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Choose a resolution and frame rate your source, encoder, and Droplet can sustain. Outbound capacity is not the only constraint: YouTube advises matching quality to the connection and testing the upload bitrate. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into output formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need for a stable, correctly configured upload.
Run FFmpeg in Docker on a DigitalOcean Droplet
- Create a Droplet and install Docker. Choose an operating system and Droplet size appropriate for your workload. There is no universal size established for a playlist stream; encoding settings, number of streams, and observed CPU, memory, and network load all matter.
- Prepare persistent media and configuration paths. Place the video files, concat list, and private encoder configuration on the Droplet. Plan Docker mounts so the container can read the media and configuration. Keep the stream key out of public image layers and shared logs.
- Select a Docker image with a suitable FFmpeg build. Verify that it includes the required protocol, codec, and muxer support, and note the image version so you can reproduce the setup. An image name alone does not establish those capabilities.
- Configure the FFmpeg input and output. Point the input at the concat list within the container, set the video/audio encoding or stream-copy behavior as appropriate for compatible inputs, and set the YouTube ingest URL and stream key. Apply YouTube-compatible protocol, codec, bitrate, frame-rate, and keyframe settings. The exact command is media- and image-dependent and is not established as a tested recipe here.
- Start the container and inspect its logs. Confirm that FFmpeg opens every listed file, produces continuous output, and can reach the YouTube ingest endpoint. Container networking, mounted paths, permissions, and endpoint reachability are implementation details to check in your deployment.
- Verify the stream in Live Control Room. Check preview, audio, video, and stream-health indicators. For a scheduled broadcast, click Go live when the preview appears. YouTube explicitly recommends testing and monitoring the stream before relying on it.
- Stop the encoder when finished. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that an indefinitely running broadcast will be archived under the same rule.
Direct FFmpeg publishing or DigitalOcean’s SRS stack?
For one playlist sent directly to YouTube, direct FFmpeg publishing has fewer moving parts. An SRS-based stack can make sense when you also need a media-server layer or its broader protocol and recording functions; it is not a requirement for direct publishing.

| Option | Best fit | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Docker with FFmpeg publishing directly to YouTube | A straightforward playlist-to-YouTube workflow | YouTube documents encoder publishing and FFmpeg documents the concat demuxer. A tested, title-specific Docker recipe is not established. |
| DigitalOcean Marketplace SRS Stack | A deployment needing a streaming-server layer or additional protocols and functions | DigitalOcean describes RTMP, WebRTC, HLS, HTTP-FLV, SRT, multi-platform restreaming, recording, FFmpeg transcoding, and virtual live streaming. These documented capabilities do not show that SRS is necessary or benchmark it against direct publishing. |
DigitalOcean’s SRS Marketplace page describes an open-source stack incorporating Go, React, SRS, FFmpeg, and WebRTC and says it can be deployed as a Droplet. Its page was generated on 13 March 2024 and lists SRS Stack 5.13.31, SRS 5.0, Docker 20.10, and FFmpeg 4.2. Treat those as the page’s catalog snapshot, not a guarantee of current versions. Its API example uses a 4 GB / 2 vCPU Droplet for an SRS deployment; that is not evidence that those resources are required or sufficient for every FFmpeg playlist workload. See DigitalOcean Marketplace: SRS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not show an incoming stream: Check that live streaming is enabled, the stream URL and key are correct, and the Droplet can reach the ingest endpoint. First-time channel enablement may still be pending.
- FFmpeg cannot open a playlist file: Check that the path in the concat list exists inside the container, not just on the Droplet, and that Docker mounted it at the expected location. Confirm file permissions for the container user.
- Playback stops or errors at a file transition: Check the concat-demuxer compatibility of the inputs and test each file and transition. Normalize or re-encode incompatible material before relying on a continuous program.
- Stream health is unstable: Test upload bitrate and reduce output quality if the connection cannot sustain the selected settings. Check server load as well as network capacity; higher resolution or frame rate may increase encoding demands.
- There is video but no audio, or audio drops out: Check that each input has an audio stream, that the selected audio codec is supported, and that transitions do not change stream layout unexpectedly. Verify audio in YouTube’s preview before going live.
- A scheduled event remains a preview: After the encoder preview appears, use Go live in Live Control Room if the event requires manual start.
- The archive is missing: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not establish automatic archiving for longer streams.
Copyright and reused-content checks
Streaming prerecorded material does not make it exempt from copyright or YouTube’s channel policies. Use content you own, have permission to stream, or are otherwise legally entitled to use, including music and embedded footage. A stream key only authorizes publishing to the channel; it does not grant rights to the media. Review the copyright safety checklist before scheduling a playlist, and check YouTube’s current rules for your channel and content.
