Neither Amazon EC2 nor a VPS is automatically cheaper or more reliable for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Compare the selected server’s compute cost with its outbound data-transfer cost at the same bitrate, then account for encoding needs and the monitoring and recovery work you will manage. EC2 prices compute and data transfer separately; VPS plans may bundle a transfer allowance. The right choice depends on your workload, region and the specific plan terms.
Start with the stream you need to run
A cloud server can run streaming software that sends a live feed to YouTube. Your estimate depends first on whether the server is relaying an already encoded video or encoding it in real time. Encoding can materially change the CPU or GPU capacity required; a low-cost server plan should not be assumed to handle every encoding workload.
Choose a target resolution, frame rate and bitrate before comparing providers. For H.264 ingestion, YouTube recommends 3–8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 6–17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 14–50 Mbps for 2160p at 60 fps. These ranges are guidance, not a requirement to use the top bitrate. YouTube also recommends RTMPS, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), testing before going live and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance.
Estimate outbound data before comparing prices
At a constant bitrate, a useful baseline for decimal gigabytes is Mbps Ă— 10.8 Ă— days. The calculation assumes a continuous stream and excludes protocol overhead, retransmissions, audio variation and incidental traffic, so budget some margin and check how the provider measures transfer.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Target bitrate | Approximate data over 30 days |
|---|---|
| 3 Mbps | 972 GB |
| 6 Mbps | 1,944 GB |
| 12 Mbps | 3,888 GB |
For example, 6 Mbps is within YouTube’s recommended H.264 range for 1080p60 and works out to about 1,944 decimal GB over 30 days before overhead. This is a mathematical estimate, not a provider quote. Use the same bitrate and number of streaming days for both server estimates.
How EC2 and a VPS differ in the bill
Amazon EC2: calculate compute and transfer separately
For EC2, select an instance type, operating system, AWS Region and billing model, then estimate compute and internet data transfer out separately. Include any other configuration-specific charges that apply to your deployment. AWS states that customers receive 100 GB per month of internet data transfer out free, aggregated across AWS services and Regions, except China and GovCloud; check the current terms and applicable regional rates when estimating. The allowance is not a substitute for pricing the transfer your stream actually uses. Start with the Amazon EC2 pricing page and a current AWS calculator estimate.

VPS: inspect the plan’s transfer cap and overage terms
A VPS provider may bundle outbound transfer with the server plan, but allowances, pooling and overage charges vary. DigitalOcean is one published example: its pricing table lists plan resources and transfer together, and its documentation says transfer is pooled across a team and additional Droplet outbound transfer costs $0.01 per GiB. Its listed Basic Droplet entry is $4 per month with 500 GiB of transfer. Those are DigitalOcean figures, not universal VPS terms; confirm current prices, what counts as transfer, and overage billing on the provider’s own pages: DigitalOcean Droplet pricing and DigitalOcean Droplet pricing documentation.
Make the comparison apples to apples
| Cost or requirement | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Compute | Instance or plan CPU, memory, storage, operating system, region and billing model; size for the actual relay or encoding workload. |
| Outbound transfer | Expected monthly data at your chosen bitrate, included allowance, pooling rules, exclusions and overage rates. |
| Operations | Monitoring, process supervision, restart behavior, key security, backups, recovery process and support terms. |
| Location | The selected AWS Region or VPS datacentre and its fit for your workflow. No comparative latency result is established here. |
There is no workload-specific EC2 quote or provider-wide VPS price in this comparison: the instance, region, encoder load, bitrate, storage and reliability design all affect the total. Recheck volatile prices and plan terms before committing.

Choose based on workload and operational capacity
- Consider EC2 if you want AWS instance and region choices and are prepared to price compute, transfer and configuration-specific charges independently.
- Consider a VPS if a provider’s bundled resources and transfer allowance fit your stream and its overage terms are clear. Do not assume every VPS has the same allowance or CPU characteristics.
- For either option, test sustained encoding load on the specific server architecture. Plan monitoring and recovery rather than treating one virtual machine as a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
Compare current official pricing and support terms for the exact plans you are considering. Neither a pricing page nor the server label alone establishes the uptime of your complete streaming setup.
Configure and verify the YouTube stream
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Create the live stream in YouTube Studio. Set up the broadcast and obtain its stream key. Treat the key as a password: keep it out of public scripts and logs, and rotate it if exposed.
- Configure the sender. Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingestion and supported codec and bitrate settings for your chosen resolution and frame rate. Set a two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds, following YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Run a test and check stream health. YouTube recommends testing before the live stream and monitoring stream health. Confirm that the feed reaches YouTube as expected before relying on it for a continuous channel.
- Plan for failure. Arrange process supervision, alerts and a restart or recovery procedure, and verify that the system can reconnect after a dropped connection. A single VM does not, by itself, guarantee continuous uptime.
Copyright and channel rules still apply
Hosting the encoder on EC2 or a VPS does not change YouTube’s eligibility, content or rights requirements. Streams must comply with YouTube Community Guidelines, and YouTube’s live-stream terms make the provider responsible for having the necessary rights to the live content and complying with applicable laws. Review YouTube’s Community Guidelines and YouTube’s Terms of Service before streaming. A server location or continuous broadcast does not grant rights to music, footage or other material.
