You can run a continuous YouTube stream from PRISM Live Studio Desktop by connecting an eligible YouTube channel, configuring the encoder, and leaving the computer, PRISM, and internet connection running. PRISM is a local encoder, not a dedicated always-on cloud mode, so the stream depends on your equipment and needs monitoring. YouTube may not capture a stream that runs longer than 12 hours, so make a separate local recording if you need a complete archive.

What you need before you start

  • An eligible YouTube channel: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  • PRISM Live Studio Desktop: This workflow uses the desktop app as the encoder. PRISM’s published system recommendations are vendor guidance, not a guarantee of round-the-clock stability.
  • A sustained upload connection: Measure upload capacity rather than relying on download speed. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth and leaving about 20% headroom. Its streaming tips explain the distinction.
  • Your video and a local archive plan: Add the documentary or other source to a PRISM scene. If the stream’s full recording matters, plan a separate local recording and confirm it is being saved.

PRISM Desktop system guidance

PRISM lists Windows 10/11 64-bit, Intel Core i3-9100 or higher, 8 GB RAM, and NVIDIA GTX 1060 or equivalent as minimums. Its general streaming recommendations are Intel Core i5-8500 or higher, at least 16 GB RAM, and NVIDIA RTX 2070 or equivalent. For game streaming, it lists Intel Core i7-9800/i9-9820 or higher, at least 32 GB RAM, and RTX 3060 Ti or equivalent. On macOS, PRISM lists Apple Silicon and macOS 12.3 as the minimum. These specifications do not establish that a system will remain stable for days at a time. Check PRISM’s current Desktop getting-started guide for the applicable platform details.

Set up the YouTube stream and connect PRISM

  1. Enable live streaming on YouTube. Sign in to the eligible channel and complete any verification or enablement prompts before the planned broadcast. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
  2. Create or select the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create a stream or choose an existing one, and set its title, description, visibility, and other event details. Verify the privacy setting is appropriate for the audience.
  3. Get the encoder credentials. In the Live Control Room, locate the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as the credential that tells an encoder where to send its feed. Treat it like a password: do not show it on screen, include it in a public post, or share it unnecessarily. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room. See Manage live stream settings.
  4. Build the PRISM scene. Open PRISM Live Studio Desktop and add the video, image, screen, or other source needed for the program. Arrange the scene and confirm the selected source is active. If the computer struggles, reduce the number of sources or lower output settings before testing.
  5. Connect YouTube. Use PRISM’s YouTube platform connection if the current build offers it. Otherwise, select the custom or encoder destination and enter the YouTube stream URL and key. PRISM’s interface can change, so follow the labels in the installed version rather than assuming a particular menu path.
  6. Configure output. Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate that your machine and measured upload can sustain continuously. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval not exceeding four seconds. Use the bitrate row for the selected codec and resolution in YouTube’s encoder settings table; do not apply a generic bitrate to every codec and output size. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.
  7. Start a test broadcast. Before the real continuous run, send a representative test with typical movement and audio. Check the preview in Live Control Room, confirm the watch page is accessible as intended, and monitor sound and picture quality. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring rather than assuming a configured encoder is working correctly.
  8. Go live and monitor it. Start streaming from PRISM and confirm YouTube reports a healthy incoming feed before promoting the watch page. Keep the computer powered, prevent sleep, and check the encoder and Live Control Room periodically. A continuous broadcast depends on the host computer, PRISM, local power and network, and YouTube ingest all remaining available.

Choose settings for a stable continuous stream

Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

Higher resolution and frame rate require more sustained bandwidth and encoding capacity. Choose an output suited to the source: a static documentary image does not automatically benefit from a high frame rate, while footage with substantial motion may need more. Use YouTube’s codec-specific table for the exact bitrate, then leave the recommended upload headroom. For example, if your measured upload fluctuates, do not set the stream bitrate near its best-case speed; choose a lower output you can maintain under ordinary network conditions.

Keyframes, rate control, and audio

Set rate control to CBR and keyframes to two seconds where PRISM exposes those controls. Keep the keyframe interval at or below YouTube’s four-second limit. Select an audio codec supported by YouTube’s guidance (AAC or MP3) and check levels in the preview to avoid clipping, silence, or unintended desktop audio.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Wired network and power

PRISM recommends a wired LAN connection rather than Wi-Fi for consistent transmission. Ethernet reduces one common source of instability but cannot prevent an ISP outage, power loss, an encoder crash, or a YouTube ingest problem. Ensure the computer is connected to reliable power and is not scheduled to sleep or restart during the broadcast.

Understand the 24/7 archive and DVR limits

A stream staying live does not mean YouTube will save its entire duration. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but “If your live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The archive guidance is at Archive live streams. If you need a complete copy, record locally as a separate task and verify that the recording file is growing and can be played back. Do not rely on the YouTube archive as the only copy.

YouTube’s DVR setting can let viewers pause or rewind, but DVR may be limited or unavailable as streams become longer than 12 hours. Do not promise viewers that rewind will remain available throughout a 24/7 broadcast; details are in Manage live stream settings and Turn on DVR on live streams.

Troubleshoot disconnections and poor playback

PRISM says it disconnected from the server

PRISM identifies network instability, insufficient upload speed, weak Wi-Fi, and firewall or security software interference as possible causes of YouTube RTMP interruptions. First check the YouTube Live Control Room status and PRISM’s connection, then switch to wired Ethernet if possible and test the connection’s upload stability. PRISM’s disconnection guidance specifically recommends LAN for consistent transmission.

The stream will not connect

  • Confirm the stream URL and key match the selected YouTube broadcast; regenerate the key if it may have been exposed.
  • Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel and that the selected event is ready in Live Control Room.
  • Check firewall or security settings that may block the encoder’s connection, and verify that the connection has usable upload bandwidth.
  • If failure began after IPv6 or ISP network changes, and the problem matches the regional symptoms described by PRISM, consult its failed-to-connect guidance. Its IPv4-only and network-optimization advice is specific to affected conditions, not a universal setting.

The stream connects but drops frames or looks unstable

Lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate to a level the connection can sustain, then test again while watching the Live Control Room preview. YouTube notes that upload capacity can be lower than download speed; a speed test result from download alone is not enough. Reduce PRISM sources if the computer is under load, and use Ethernet where practical.

The broadcast ends while nobody is watching

Do not assume the encoder will restart itself after a crash or lost connection. Check whether PRISM is still running, whether the machine lost power or entered sleep, and whether the network or YouTube ingest interrupted the feed. Restart the broadcast from the encoder and confirm the new incoming stream in Live Control Room. Test any planned recovery procedure before relying on it for a long run.
