For a channel intended to run around the clock, plan for operator monitoring, interruptions and separate broadcast segments: YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed single archive for a 24-hour broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do this ahead of your planned launch. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the process.
- A prerecorded video or playlist and an encoder that can send it as a live feed. YouTube supports encoder software running on a computer and standalone hardware encoders; it does not require one particular device model.
- A stable operating setup for the encoder, plus someone or something to monitor the encoder and YouTube’s Live Control Room. The official setup guidance does not establish a guaranteed method for endless uninterrupted looping or a required India-specific bandwidth figure.
- The YouTube stream URL and stream key for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream.
Set up the prerecorded YouTube Live stream
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, begin the live-streaming enablement flow and complete any verification YouTube requests. If this is your channel’s first time, allow up to 24 hours for access to become available.
- Create or schedule a stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and choose to create a stream or schedule one. Scheduling creates a watch page that you can share and gives viewers the option to set a reminder.
- Choose an encoder. Select computer-based encoder software or a standalone hardware encoder that supports your video source and YouTube’s current ingest workflow. Check the encoder maker’s current documentation for compatible formats and system requirements; YouTube’s general guide does not set one universal computer specification.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream’s settings in Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. In the encoder, open its stream or broadcast settings and enter those values in the matching server URL and stream key fields. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube stream key guidance.
- Load the prerecorded video or playlist. Set the encoder to play the material you intend to broadcast. Confirm that the source and playlist behavior work as intended before promoting a continuous schedule; looping and recovery behavior depend on the encoder or service you choose.
- Set the broadcast options. Review latency, DVR, auto-start and auto-stop in the Live Control Room. Then start the encoder’s feed. For a scheduled stream, wait for the Live Control Room preview and select “Go live” when ready. YouTube’s live streaming settings guide describes these controls.
- Check the live preview. Confirm that YouTube receives the picture and sound, the stream is going to the intended event, and playback is working before leaving the encoder unattended. Keep the stream key private; if it is exposed, reset it using YouTube’s stream key controls.
Choose settings for a long-running broadcast
Latency
Latency is the delay between the source and what viewers see. Lower latency can increase playback buffering. If your documentary stream does not depend on real-time audience interaction, low latency may offer little benefit; choose a setting that favors reliable playback for your audience. The available options and their labels can change, so check YouTube’s current latency settings guidance.
DVR
With DVR enabled, viewers can pause, rewind and resume during the live stream. Enable it if you want viewers arriving late to seek backward; consider whether that experience fits the way you schedule or present the programming.
Auto-start and auto-stop
YouTube provides auto-start and auto-stop controls, and reusing stream settings also copies their selections. Check them against your encoder’s behavior and your operator workflow before relying on an unattended start or stop. These options do not by themselves guarantee that an encoder will keep sending a feed indefinitely.

RTMPS ingestion
If your encoder supports RTMPS and your workflow calls for encrypted ingestion, use YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL and specifies port 443 for RTMPS connections. Confirm the endpoint and connection fields in YouTube’s current stream settings documentation and your encoder’s instructions.
Plan continuity and archives realistically
YouTube states that “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That documents automatic archiving for streams shorter than 12 hours; it does not guarantee that a broadcast lasting longer will be saved as one complete video. For a nominal 24/7 channel, plan separate broadcast segments and decide how you will handle each archive. Check Live Control Room behavior before relying on one long broadcast or one complete VOD. A long-running channel also needs a continuity plan outside YouTube’s stream settings. Decide who will notice a failed feed, how the encoder or service will be restarted, and how a new segment will be scheduled when needed. YouTube documents reusable stream settings and start/stop controls, but its general help pages do not promise endless uninterrupted looping. The cited guidance also does not establish a universal bitrate, computer requirement, India-specific internet target or electrical-backup size; follow the chosen encoder’s current requirements and assess your own connection and power setup.
Choose a way to keep the stream running

YouTube supports both encoder categories, but its general documentation does not independently compare their reliability, price or performance. Choose based on the source you need to play and how you will handle monitoring and recovery—not on an assumed guarantee of uninterrupted service.

Having permission to broadcast a video is essential, but permission alone does not guarantee that YouTube will approve a channel for monetization. YouTube says monetized content should be original and authentic, and its monetization policies apply to live streams as well as other formats. Generic, repetitive or mass-produced content can be ineligible; reused content may also be ineligible if the channel lacks significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. YouTube may review the channel as a whole, including its theme, most-viewed and newest videos, watch-time distribution, metadata and About section. Before scheduling a documentary playlist, confirm that you have the necessary rights for every video, music track, image and other included material. Then make clear what original editorial, educational or entertainment value your channel adds; simply looping material or accumulating watch time does not ensure acceptance into the YouTube Partner Program.
YPP eligibility and India-specific considerations
YouTube’s current overview lists an ad-revenue eligibility route of 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. These thresholds are not a promise of acceptance: other requirements and a channel review apply, and eligibility or feature access can change. Check the channel’s Earn tab and the current YouTube Partner Program overview before relying on the figures.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- Live streaming is not available yet: If you have just enabled it for the first time, access may take up to 24 hours. Wait for enablement to complete and check Live Control Room again.
- YouTube receives no feed: Check that the encoder has the correct stream URL and stream key, that it is actively sending, and that you selected the intended stream in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
- The preview works but the scheduled broadcast is not live to viewers: In the scheduled workflow, the encoder preview is not the final “Go live” action. Confirm the preview, then select “Go live” in Live Control Room.
- Viewers report buffering: Review the latency setting. YouTube cautions that lower latency can mean more buffering; choose a less aggressive setting if immediate interaction is unnecessary.
- Viewers cannot rewind: Check whether DVR is enabled for the stream. With DVR enabled, viewers can pause, rewind and resume.
- The broadcast stops unexpectedly: Check the encoder, source playlist, connection and operator monitoring. Review YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop selections and the encoder’s recovery behavior; the general YouTube documentation does not guarantee an endless feed.
- A long broadcast does not appear as one complete archive: YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours only. Plan shorter broadcast segments and verify the archive for each one.
- Monetization is denied despite having video rights: Rights clearance is not the same as YPP approval. Review the channel for reused or repetitive material and make its original commentary, modification or other value clear under YouTube’s channel-wide review policies.
