Keeping it live around the clock is harder: the Mac, encoder, internet connection, and recording plan all need attention, and YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
What a 24/7 Mac stream requires
A Mac-based broadcast uses an encoder to turn your video and audio into a stream and send it to YouTube. You can use software on the Mac or a standalone hardware encoder; YouTube documents both categories, but does not certify a particular Mac or promise uninterrupted operation. For a computer-based setup, check that your chosen encoder supports your Mac and macOS version. OBS is one software option; consult its official Help Portal for current product guidance.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming.
- An encoder, such as compatible Mac software, and the video or audio source you want to broadcast.
- A stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for your selected settings.
- A plan for local recording, interruptions, and what viewers will see if the Mac or network goes offline.
Camera, microphone, and headset are production options, not universal requirements. A stream built from prerecorded material has different production needs, but still has to meet YouTube’s content and rights policies.
Enable live streaming and create the YouTube stream
- Check eligibility and activate the feature early. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so complete this step well before the planned start. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule an encoder stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup flow. The stream setup provides a watch page and the connection details the encoder needs: a stream URL and a stream key.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: enter it only in the intended encoder, and do not include it in a public screenshot, document, or message. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before relying on the stream.
- Connect your source to the encoder. Choose the video and audio inputs the production requires. Confirm that the encoder is sending to YouTube’s provided stream URL using the correct key.
Configure the encoder and test the feed
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Follow the encoder’s available options and YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance; a setting displayed by one encoder may not be available in another.

Choose a sustainable resolution and bitrate
Match resolution and frame rate to the visual detail the program needs and the upload speed your connection can sustain. YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. That is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular Mac, router, or internet plan can hold the rate continuously. Run an upload speed test, then test the actual setup with representative movement and audio. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into other output formats for viewers, so sending a higher-resolution feed is not the only factor in what each viewer can watch.
Preflight before the broadcast
- Start with a conservative quality and bitrate that leave headroom on the tested upload connection.
- Send a test feed with the real source material, representative motion, and audio levels.
- Check YouTube Studio’s stream-health indicators and watch for warnings, dropped frames, audio problems, or unstable connection status.
- Confirm that local recording works at the same time if you intend to keep a backup, and check that the Mac has enough free storage for the planned recording period.
Do not treat one successful short test as proof the Mac and network will remain stable indefinitely. Monitor the live feed after launch and recheck it when you change the encoder, source, settings, or network.

Plan for the 12-hour archive limit
A 24/7 broadcast is not the same as a dependable full-length archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its guidance explicitly warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Read YouTube’s archive guidance before choosing a continuous schedule.
If preserving the program matters, make a local recording backup and test it before going live. An external SSD is one possible place to store recordings, but YouTube does not require an SSD or specify a capacity. Estimate the space your own encoder and settings consume, confirm the destination has room, and verify that recordings can be opened and played back.

Another possible approach is to divide a long broadcast into shorter sessions, but stopping and restarting is not a guaranteed seamless solution: it can interrupt viewing, and YouTube’s archive guidance does not promise that every segment will be retained. Test the exact restart and recording behavior before depending on it.
Choose a setup that matches the production

Neither category removes the need to test the internet connection, stream health, recording, and failure behavior. Choose based on the inputs and controls your program needs, compatibility, and budget—not an assumption that a particular category guarantees 24/7 uptime.

Rights and monetization for a continuous stream
You are responsible for clearing rights to the content you broadcast, including music. YouTube’s livestream terms place that responsibility on the content provider. Check permissions for every video, soundtrack, image, and other material in the program before streaming it.
Being live continuously does not guarantee monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams and expect original, authentic content; repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible. YouTube clarified and renamed its “repetitious content” policy as “inauthentic content” on July 15, 2025, while stating that such content was already ineligible under its originality requirements. Review the current policy for your channel and content rather than assuming that a long-running stream qualifies.

Troubleshooting a Mac stream
- YouTube Studio does not show an incoming feed: Check that the encoder is using the stream URL and current key from the correct Studio stream. Confirm the encoder is started and that the Mac can reach the internet.
- Stream health shows connection trouble: Measure upload speed under the conditions in which you plan to broadcast. Reduce bitrate or output demands if the connection cannot sustain them, then run another representative test.
- Video stutters or drops frames: Compare the selected resolution and frame rate with the sustained upload capacity and encoder load. Lower the demands and test again; do not assume the published bitrate recommendation will fit every connection.
- Audio is missing or wrong: Check the encoder’s selected audio input, confirm the source is producing sound, and listen to a test feed before relying on the live broadcast.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: Check the stream duration against YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance. Use a tested local recording backup if the recording matters; do not assume a longer stream will be archived.
- The stream stops when the Mac or network fails: Determine what the selected encoder does after a disconnect, and test recovery by simulating an interruption before the real broadcast. Do not count on unattended recovery unless your chosen setup has demonstrated it.
- The stream starts late on a new channel: First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable the feature in advance and check channel eligibility.
