YouTube’s current standard tools for saving videos are Watch later and playlists, rather than a general Favorites button. Use Watch later for a quick bookmark, or create a playlist named “Favorites” and set it to Private for a personal collection. Saving adds a link to your YouTube account; it does not download a video file.
Save a video to Watch later
Watch later is the quick option when you want to find a video again without organizing it into a separate collection. You need to be signed in to the YouTube account where you want it saved. YouTube’s current steps are described in its playlist help and Watch later instructions.
On a computer
- Sign in to YouTube and open the video.
- Click More beneath or beside the video.
- Select Save, then choose Watch later.
On some desktop layouts, you can hover over a video thumbnail and use its Watch later control without opening the video.
In the YouTube mobile app
- Open the video.
- Tap More beneath it.
- Tap Save, then choose Watch later.
For a Short, the option may appear as More → Save to playlist → Watch later. Labels and placement can vary by device, account, video type, and interface version.

Look for YouTube’s confirmation message to check which playlist received the video. If it went to the wrong one, choose Change in the message if that option appears. Otherwise, save the video to the right playlist and remove the unwanted entry from the other one.
Create a private Favorites playlist
If you want a lasting collection rather than a temporary watch queue, make your own playlist. You can call it Favorites, Documentaries to revisit, or anything that helps you find videos later. YouTube’s playlist instructions describe creating a playlist while saving a video.

Create it while saving
- Open a video and choose More → Save.
- Select New playlist.
- Enter a name, such as Favorites.
- Set the visibility to Private, then select Create.
A private playlist is intended to be visible only to its owner. An Unlisted playlist is not fully private: people with its link may be able to view or share it. Choose Public only if you want others to find the collection.
Add videos later
For each video, choose Save and select your Favorites playlist. YouTube may default to the last playlist you used, so check the confirmation message rather than assuming the video went to Favorites.

You can also create a playlist first from the You section by opening the playlists area, choosing to create a playlist, and setting its title and privacy. The exact controls may differ between app and desktop layouts.
Find your saved videos
- Open YouTube and select You.
- Choose Watch later or the playlist you created.
- Select a video to play it.
Current YouTube help points to the You section for saved and created playlists. Some interfaces and older instructions use the label Library for this area. See YouTube’s instructions for finding and saving playlists.

Remove a video from a saved list
On a computer
- Open You, then open Watch later or the playlist containing the video.
- Click More next to the video.
- Choose Remove from Watch later or the equivalent remove option for that playlist.
In the mobile app
- Open the playlist.
- Tap More beside the video.
- Choose the option to remove it from that playlist.
This removes your saved entry, not the video from YouTube. Deleting a playlist likewise removes the collection, not videos owned by other creators. YouTube notes that traces such as viewing history or broader analytics data may not disappear in the same way as the playlist itself; see its playlist guidance.
Save an entire YouTube playlist
Saving a playlist keeps the collection easy to find; it is different from adding one video to Watch later or copying individual videos into your own playlist.

On a computer
- Open a video that belongs to the playlist.
- Open the playlist panel.
- Select Save playlist.
- Find it later under You.
In the mobile app
- Open the channel’s Playlists tab or a video in the playlist.
- Tap More beside the playlist, or use More → Save while watching a video in it.
- Find the saved playlist under You.

When offline viewing is what you need
YouTube’s download feature is separate from Save. Availability depends on location, account status, the video, and YouTube’s rules. Official downloads are encrypted and played through the YouTube app rather than appearing as ordinary files in a phone gallery or computer Downloads folder. Premium downloads can be found in the app’s Downloads section; YouTube also supports computer downloads in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera where Premium downloads are available. Its help page says downloads may require reconnection to verify availability—up to 29 days in many cases, with shorter periods in some locations. Check the current offline video help and Premium download instructions for eligibility and details.
For personal bookmarking, Watch later and private playlists are the right tools; Premium is not required for those. Do not assume an offline feature lets you keep a permanent MP4 of any video. YouTube distinguishes videos you uploaded from other creators’ videos, which may be available only for supported offline playback. Third-party download sites and browser tools are outside YouTube’s normal save workflow and can raise security, privacy, copyright, or terms-of-service concerns.

Why a video may not save
- It is marked made for kids. YouTube says videos or channels with this designation may not be addable to Watch later or a playlist from some surfaces, though adding from search results may be possible in certain cases. See YouTube’s playlist help.
- You are signed out or using another account. Sign in and confirm the active account is the one whose saved lists you want to use.
- The video is unavailable. A creator can remove a video or make it private after you save it. A playlist entry does not guarantee the video will remain accessible.
- It went to another playlist. YouTube may use the last playlist selected. Check the confirmation and change the destination if available.
- The control is in a different place. Update the YouTube app, open the video’s More menu, or try the thumbnail menu from search or the home feed. Check You for the saved list, and try YouTube in a desktop browser if the app does not expose the expected option. Interface labels can differ.
