For hands-on control, run Wowza Streaming Engine as a Linux Docker container with an explicit image tag, license key, published ports, and persistent log storage. For a guided trial stack, use Wowza’s Docker Compose setup, which starts Engine and Manager as separate services. Both paths require Docker and a valid Wowza license or trial key.
Choose a Docker setup

These are distinct deployment paths, not interchangeable commands. The direct guide’s example runs the Engine image and requires you to configure access; the Compose guide defines separate Engine and Manager services. See Wowza’s direct Docker instructions and Docker Compose instructions.
Before you start
- Install Docker on the target system and verify it with
docker version. - Have a Wowza subscription or perpetual license key for the direct setup, or a trial key or paid key for Compose.
- Choose the container architecture and an image tag. Wowza documents AMD64 (x86_64) and ARM64 (aarch64) images. Its Docker instructions updated October 2, 2026 identify WSE 4.12.0 as the latest software image at that time; check the official page for current tags before deployment.
- Choose an explicit version tag if repeatability matters. Wowza warns that the repository’s
latesttag is defined by its owner and is not guaranteed to represent the most recent software version. - Check that the host ports you intend to publish are available, and decide which management and streaming protocols your deployment needs.
For Apple Silicon, Wowza says to use the ARM image and not configure Docker to use Rosetta 2 for Intel emulation with that image.
Run a direct Linux Docker container
Pull the image
The image is in the wowza/wowza-streaming-engine Docker Hub repository. Select the tag that matches your intended software version and architecture. Wowza’s ARM example uses the repository’s ARM64 image; consult its current instructions for the exact tag syntax rather than assuming an unqualified tag selects the version you need.

Start the container with deliberate settings
Wowza documents this basic command form:
docker run -it --name [container-name] --entrypoint /sbin/entrypoint.sh [repository]:[version]
Replace the bracketed placeholders with a useful container name and the repository and version tag you selected. The guide uses -it for an attached pseudo-terminal; use -d instead when you want the container to run in the background. Naming the container makes later stop and start commands easier.

The expanded Wowza example adds a restart policy, published ports, a log bind mount, and environment variables. Treat the following as a command shape, not a copy-and-run command: replace each placeholder with a value appropriate to your host, license, and access policy.

The four port mappings above are those in Wowza’s expanded example, not a universal firewall prescription. Publish the ports required for the protocols and Manager access you intend to use, and ensure the host and any intervening firewall or network allow them. Wowza warns that Manager will not be accessible if its ports are not exposed.
Set credentials, license, and IP carefully
WSE_MGR_USERandWSE_MGR_PASSset Manager credentials. If omitted, the documented defaults are bothwowza; do not rely on those defaults for a real deployment.WSE_LICsupplies the license key. Wowza says a missing or invalid key results in Trial mode.WSE_IP_PARAMsupplies the IP value. If omitted, the guide says it defaults to localhost. Docker does not support IPv6 addresses for this configuration; use IPv4.
A license key and Manager password are sensitive values. Avoid placing them in shell history or sharing command output that contains them; use your environment’s appropriate secrets-handling method.

Keep logs outside the container
Mount the log directory to a host directory, as in the example, so logs do not fill the container’s primary disk. A bind mount also makes logs available outside the container. Confirm the host path and container path against Wowza’s current instructions for the image tag you use.

Wowza’s Compose path uses one YAML file to define two services: the Engine backend and the browser-based Manager. It is a separate setup from the one-container direct example.

- Sign up for a Wowza trial and obtain a trial license key, or prepare a paid key.
- Download or prepare the Compose YAML as directed in Wowza’s Compose guide.
- Set the Engine and Manager image tags, configure the license, and set optional Manager admin credentials. Do not retain sample credentials as production credentials.
- Review the example port mappings and check for conflicts on the host. The mapping list covers REST API, web delivery, secure streaming, RTMP-family protocols, and SRT UDP; an example mapping does not mean a protocol is enabled or reachable in every host and network configuration.
- Mount configuration, applications, and content that must persist beyond the container lifecycle. The guide makes these mounts optional, so decide explicitly whether the deployment needs them.
- From the directory containing the Compose file, run
docker compose upas instructed. Use the Manager URL shown by Wowza’s example,http://localhost:8088/login.htm?host=http://wse.docker:8087, when the sample service names and port configuration apply. Adjust access details to match your own YAML and host.
Stop, start, and troubleshoot
Stop and restart the direct container
Wowza documents these Docker commands:
- Stop:
docker stop [container-name] - Start again:
docker start [container-name]
The direct guide says logs and libraries persist when the container is stopped. For data that must survive container removal or replacement, configure suitable host or named-volume mounts rather than assuming container-local files are permanent.
Common problems
- Image fails to pull or start: confirm the repository and explicit version tag, and match the image architecture to the host (AMD64 or ARM64). On Apple Silicon with the ARM image, do not enable Rosetta 2 Intel emulation for it.
- Manager page is unreachable: publish the Manager ports, check that the host ports are free, and verify host firewall and network access. The direct example exposes 8086, 8087, and 8088 alongside 1935, but use the ports relevant to your deployment.
- Another service already uses a port: change the host-side port mapping in your run command or Compose file, then connect using the changed host port. Ensure the chosen mapping remains consistent with your Manager URL and client configuration.
- Engine runs in Trial mode: verify that
WSE_LICor the Compose license setting contains a valid key. Wowza says an absent or invalid key in the direct setup results in Trial mode. - Manager login does not work: check the configured
WSE_MGR_USERandWSE_MGR_PASSvalues or Compose admin settings. The direct guide’s fallback is the same username and password,wowza; set your own credentials rather than depending on it. - Address configuration fails: provide an IPv4 value for
WSE_IP_PARAM; the guide says this Docker configuration does not support IPv6 and otherwise defaults to localhost. - Data disappears after replacing a container: add mounts for the data that must outlive the container. In Compose, Wowza specifically identifies configuration, applications, and content as optional persistence mounts; mount logs in the direct setup.
