You can loop a video to YouTube Live from an Indian cloud VPS by running FFmpeg with -re to read the file at its natural rate and -stream_loop -1 to repeat it indefinitely. Those options loop the input; they do not reconnect a broken YouTube output. Set up process supervision and stream-health monitoring separately, and test the exact file, bitrate and VPS before leaving it unattended.
What you need before you start
- A Linux VPS in India, with enough disk space for your video and enough sustained CPU and outbound capacity for your chosen encoding method.
- FFmpeg and its companion
ffprobe, installed from a trusted distribution package or official build. - A video you own or are authorized to stream, with compatible video and audio tracks.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live stream, plus its current RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
- A plan for process supervision, safe logs, monitoring and recovery if the output disconnects.
An India-region VPS can be convenient for administration and may be geographically close to some viewers, but the important operational test is whether it can sustain outbound delivery to YouTube at your chosen bitrate. Do not assume that one VPS size suits every stream: copying compatible streams and continuously transcoding video place very different demands on CPU.
Choose an India-region VPS for the actual workload
Two documented regional examples are DigitalOcean’s Bangalore datacenter (blr1) and Amazon Lightsail in Mumbai (ap-south-1). Their regional presence alone does not establish which plan, transfer allowance or price is right for your stream.
| Provider example | Documented location | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean | Bangalore, India (blr1) |
Current plan availability, sustained CPU behavior, outbound transfer allowance and overage, disk capacity, monitoring, console access and total billed cost. DigitalOcean regional availability |
| Amazon Lightsail | Mumbai (ap-south-1) |
Current plan availability, transfer limits and overage, disk, sustained compute behavior, monitoring, console access and total billed cost. AWS says to consider EC2 for workloads such as video encoding that need consistently high CPU performance. Lightsail regions and Availability Zones · Lightsail FAQ |
For a stream-copy command, FFmpeg passes through compatible media rather than encoding each frame again, which generally reduces CPU work; it still needs sufficient network capacity and compatible codecs, container and timestamps. A transcode command encodes continuously, so check sustained CPU under the intended settings. The AWS guidance is a reason to compare compute options, not a guarantee about any specific instance. No provider plan price or transfer figure is stated here; confirm current terms with the provider before provisioning.

Install FFmpeg and inspect the video
- Connect to your VPS using the provider’s console or your normal secure SSH workflow. Apply your usual account and firewall safeguards before making the machine public-facing.
- Install FFmpeg from your Linux distribution’s trusted package source or an official build. Package commands vary by distribution, so use the provider or distribution’s current installation instructions rather than copying an unverified command.
- Confirm the build: run
ffmpeg -version. The command should print the installed FFmpeg version and build configuration. - Upload the video you own or are authorized to broadcast. Check that the VPS has enough free disk for the file and operational logs.
- Inspect the input: run
ffprobe -hide_banner /path/to/video.mp4, replacing the path with the real file path. Review the video and audio streams, codecs, frame rate and duration. Confirm that the file has the tracks you expect before starting an indefinite loop.
Create or select a YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create a stream or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the current server URL and stream key from that stream’s Live settings. Use the current values shown for your channel rather than assuming a fixed ingest address.
- Keep the key private. Do not publish it in a tutorial, screenshot, shared script or public repository. Depending on how a command is launched, shell history and process listings can expose credentials; protected configuration and environment files can reduce casual exposure but still require careful permissions and log handling.
- Use RTMPS when available. YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.” See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions and its Live Broadcasts API overview.
Run a file loop with FFmpeg
The command below is an illustrative transcode starting point for a 1080p30 H.264 stream. Replace the file path, ingest host and key placeholders; never paste a real key into a public example. This configuration has not been benchmarked on a VPS and is not a universal recommendation.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4 \
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p \
-r 30 -g 60 -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M \
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 \
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_HOST/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
-rereads a file at its native frame rate, which makes file playback behave like a live source. FFmpeg cautions against using a low read rate on an already-live input because it can cause packet loss.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. It does not repair a failed network connection or restart FFmpeg after an exit.-c:v libx264and-c:a aactranscode video and audio. The preset, frame rate, pixel format, bitrate and audio settings are examples to test against your source, YouTube settings and VPS capacity.-g 60at-r 30sets a 60-frame GOP, or a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds; its published H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30. Those are encoder recommendations, not promises about viewer outcomes. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings when configuring the stream.- The example uses FLV output to an RTMPS destination. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as RTMP/RTMPS video codecs, and AAC or MP3 for audio. Do not assume this particular command is appropriate for every source or resolution.
If the input’s codecs and container are compatible with YouTube and the output, stream-copy may avoid continuous video encoding. That means changing the command’s encoding options, not blindly reusing the example: verify output compatibility, frame pacing and timestamps on a test stream before relying on it.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast, using representative sections of the actual video, including its loudest or most complex audio and its fastest visual movement.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages while FFmpeg runs. Confirm that video and audio arrive, the image is stable, sound is present, and the reported health remains acceptable. YouTube recommends testing with representative content, monitoring stream health and reviewing messages.
- Observe the VPS while the command runs. Check CPU load, memory, disk space, network delivery and FFmpeg output for errors under the intended bitrate. A successful short test does not prove that a provider plan will sustain the workload indefinitely.
- Let the file pass its end and confirm that playback returns to the beginning. Check audio continuity and the transition between the end and start of the file.
- Test what happens when FFmpeg exits or the output connection is interrupted. Decide how the process will be restarted, and check both YouTube’s stream health and the VPS process after recovery.
Do not promise yourself seamless continuity just because a restart works. YouTube reconnection, a supervisor restarting FFmpeg and FFmpeg looping its input are separate behaviors.
Keep a 24/7 process supervised and recoverable
Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor, such as a carefully configured system service, rather than relying on an interactive SSH session to stay open. Configure restart behavior deliberately; use restricted permissions for service files and secret-bearing configuration; and avoid logging the stream key. Alert on both process exits and YouTube stream-health problems, since an FFmpeg process can remain alive while delivery is unhealthy.

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation includes an RTMP example that attempts output recovery after temporary failures. That is a distinct approach to output recovery, not the same as input looping or a supervisor restart, and it should be tested with your ingest setup before use. HTTP input reconnect options documented for ffplay apply to HTTP inputs; they do not fix a failed RTMP(S) output to YouTube. See the FFmpeg all-options reference and FFplay documentation.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no video | Wrong or outdated ingest URL or key, a connection problem, or FFmpeg failing before output starts. | Copy the current URL and key again from the selected stream’s Live settings. Inspect FFmpeg’s error output and YouTube’s stream-health messages; keep the key out of shared logs and screenshots. |
| FFmpeg stops at the end of the file | The input is not being looped as intended, or the command failed for another reason. | Confirm -stream_loop -1 is an input option associated with the file, and read the process output. Use supervision for unexpected exits; looping is not a restart mechanism. |
| The VPS is overloaded during playback | Continuous transcoding can demand more CPU than stream-copy; the selected encoder settings may exceed the host’s sustained capacity. | Check actual CPU load during a representative test. If compatible, consider stream-copy; otherwise choose compute based on measured workload and retest at the intended settings. |
| Stream health degrades or disconnects | The VPS may not sustain the outbound bitrate, or the network/output may have failed. | Check provider network and transfer conditions, FFmpeg output and YouTube health. Test any recovery method separately and alert on delivery problems, not just process exits. |
| Image or audio is missing, incorrect or choppy | The source may lack the expected track, use incompatible media, or have timing or output settings that do not suit the file. | Inspect the file with ffprobe, compare its streams and frame rate to the command, and test changes in a non-public broadcast before relying on them. |
| The loop transition is abrupt | The end and beginning of the source may not be designed to join cleanly. | Review the file’s final and opening frames and audio; edit or choose a source with a suitable loop point. FFmpeg repeating the file does not make its endpoints seamless. |
Check rights and YouTube rules before broadcasting
Only stream material you own or are authorized to broadcast. A video being available online does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream requirements for your content and channel, and check account-specific eligibility or limits in YouTube Studio; these can vary and are not established by the FFmpeg command. Reused-content and monetization decisions are separate from whether a technical stream connects, so do not treat a successful test as evidence that a channel or video qualifies for monetization.
