To loop retro gaming footage on YouTube Live, add a rights-cleared video file to an OBS Studio scene as a Media Source, enable looping, and send OBS’s encoder feed to a YouTube stream. You do not need a console or capture card unless you want to capture live output from physical hardware.
Choose a prerecorded file or capture a real console
If the footage is already recorded, the simplest setup is a video file played repeatedly by OBS. OBS can act as both the playback source and the encoder sending the stream to YouTube. YouTube describes encoders as tools that let creators stream gameplay, overlays, and hardware such as microphones and cameras (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming).
A capture card is only relevant if you want to broadcast a physical console’s live output. That route requires a capture path compatible with both the console’s output and your computer. Before buying hardware, check connector and signal compatibility, supported resolution and frame rate, operating-system support, and whether game audio is captured. No particular retro console or capture-card model is established as compatible here.
Check YouTube Live eligibility before setup
- Your channel must be verified, and it must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- YouTube’s current Help page says streamers must be at least 16.
- Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so activate access well before the planned broadcast.

Set up the repeating video in OBS
- Create a scene. In OBS Studio, add a scene for the retro footage. A single scene is sufficient if you are streaming only the video and its audio.
- Add the file. Add a Media Source to the scene and select the prerecorded video file. Enable the source’s looping option so playback restarts after it reaches the end.
- Check framing and sound. Confirm the picture fits the OBS canvas as intended and that the audio is appropriate and audible. Retro footage with a different aspect ratio from the canvas may need framing adjustments; inspect the preview rather than assuming it fills the screen correctly.
- Inspect the loop transition. Let the file reach its end and verify that it returns to the beginning without an unintended black frame, audio pop, or pause. Repeat playback is only as seamless as the source file and playback transition.

Connect OBS to YouTube and start the broadcast
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live, then create or schedule the stream.
- Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream.
- Enter them in OBS. Open OBS’s streaming settings, select the option to use a custom server or stream URL if required by the interface, then enter the YouTube stream URL and key. The key routes the encoder feed to the correct stream, so treat it like a password and do not share it.
- Wait for the preview. Once OBS is sending video, check the incoming feed in Live Control Room. Verify picture, sound, framing, and the file’s loop transition before starting the public broadcast.
- Start the stream in Live Control Room. When the preview is correct, start the live stream there. Keep OBS running and monitor both the encoder and the YouTube watch page.

Protect stream stability and audio quality
YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth exceed the total stream bitrate, with 20% headroom. For example, compare the connection’s available upload capacity with the total bitrate of the outgoing stream; do not treat the connection’s advertised download speed as upload capacity. - Set up and test ahead of the intended start time rather than troubleshooting after going live.
- Preview the feed in Live Control Room and check playback on the watch page, including on a mobile device.
- Monitor audio and video throughout the broadcast. A file that loops correctly at the start can still encounter a playback or connection issue later.
- For the repeated footage specifically, listen and watch across the end-to-start boundary for a gap, pop, or flash of black.
Clear the rights for gameplay and audio
Use gameplay footage, music, and other audio only when you have the rights needed for the intended use. Whether a particular game publisher permits a particular stream depends on the rights and terms that apply to that material; a video file being available to you does not itself establish permission.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. It may replace the picture with a placeholder and warn the creator; continued matching content can lead to interruption or termination. A license from a rights holder may not by itself prevent a live interruption: YouTube says the rights holder may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Archived streams can also receive Content ID claims after the live broadcast ends. See YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
Common problems and practical fixes
