To play a church’s recorded worship songs without using your phone’s cellular data, connect to internet-enabled Wi-Fi and watch the video in YouTube. Wi-Fi still uses an internet connection, but the video traffic goes through Wi-Fi rather than your mobile-data allowance. If you need to listen when you have no connection at all, use YouTube’s Download option over Wi-Fi if it is available for that video, account, and location.
Option 1: Stream the recording over Wi-Fi
- Connect your phone to a Wi-Fi network that has internet access. A Wi-Fi symbol alone does not guarantee that the network is online; open a webpage if you are unsure.
- Open the church’s video in the YouTube app or a browser and play it normally.
- If you want to prevent YouTube from using cellular data if Wi-Fi drops, restrict its mobile-data access in your phone’s system settings, if your operating system offers per-app controls. Menu names and paths vary by device, operating-system version, and carrier. YouTube’s Android troubleshooting guidance also advises checking the phone’s mobile-data settings.
Streaming over Wi-Fi avoids using your phone’s cellular-data allowance for playback, but it is not offline: the Wi-Fi network still needs an internet connection. If the phone switches to cellular because Wi-Fi disconnects and mobile data remains enabled, playback may then use cellular data.
Option 2: Download in YouTube for later offline playback
If you want to listen somewhere without Wi-Fi or cellular service, check whether YouTube offers an in-app download for that particular recording. Download availability is not guaranteed for every church video, account, or location.
- While connected to Wi-Fi, open the video in the YouTube app.
- Look for Download on the video’s watch page. If the control is not available, YouTube does not offer that download for your current video, account, or location.
- In YouTube, open Settings → Background & downloads and enable Download over Wi-Fi only. Labels or menu placement can change with app versions. Set this before downloading if avoiding cellular use is important.
- Choose a download quality that suits your needs and available storage, then let the download finish while the phone is on Wi-Fi.
- When you are offline, open Downloads in YouTube and play the saved recording there.
YouTube says higher-quality downloads can take more storage and data, so complete the download on Wi-Fi and consider how much space your phone has. A saved video remains an in-app YouTube download; this is not an exported video file to move or redistribute.

Download eligibility, Premium, and reconnection
- Availability varies. YouTube’s offline-download options depend on the location and the video’s eligibility. A church channel or channel membership does not by itself guarantee that a recording can be downloaded.
- Premium may be required. YouTube documents downloads through YouTube Premium where that service is available. It also describes offline downloads in select locations. Check the video’s Download control and the availability of the relevant feature in your location rather than assuming a particular recording qualifies.
- Offline access is not necessarily permanent. YouTube may require the app to reconnect to the internet to verify that a video is still available. The time before reconnection is required varies by location and content, so there is no single interval to rely on everywhere.
Choose the approach that fits your situation

If you do not have Wi-Fi
A router provides a local Wi-Fi network; it does not provide internet access by itself. You also need an internet service connected to that router. If you have neither, you cannot stream the recording over Wi-Fi until you have internet access. You can still check whether YouTube offers an eligible download the next time you have Wi-Fi, then listen later from YouTube’s Downloads section.
Common problems and fixes
- The video starts using cellular data. Confirm that the phone is connected to Wi-Fi and that the Wi-Fi has internet access. If you need to prevent cellular fallback, turn off cellular data temporarily or restrict YouTube’s mobile-data access where your phone supports it.
- There is no Download button. Offline availability depends on the specific video, account, and location. Check that you are signed into the intended account and whether the applicable YouTube Premium feature is available to you; a channel membership alone is not a guarantee.
- A download uses cellular data. In YouTube, check Settings → Background & downloads and enable Download over Wi-Fi only. Menu wording may differ by app version.
- The phone runs low on storage. Choose a lower download quality or remove downloads you no longer need. Higher-quality downloads take more storage.
- A saved recording will not play offline. Reconnect to the internet so YouTube can verify availability. Offline access can depend on the content and location, and a video may cease to be available for offline playback.
