You can run a YouTube Live stream from a Raspberry Pi with Ubuntu Server by installing a board-compatible Ubuntu image, connecting a video and audio source, and using an encoder to send a YouTube-compatible feed to Live Control Room. The Pi must stay powered, cool and connected, and its ability to encode a particular source and resolution continuously depends on the workload; there is no single configuration guaranteed for every Pi. If your goal is to loop uploaded recordings rather than stream a live camera or capture feed, a cloud service is another option.
Check that your source and Raspberry Pi can handle the job
First identify what the stream will show. A camera or HDMI capture device, generated graphics, and a loop of existing video place different demands on the capture interface, processor, memory, storage and cooling. Decide on the source, resolution and frame rate before installing software. The official material cited here does not establish that any particular Pi model, cooling setup or encoder configuration can sustain every workload around the clock.
Check the Ubuntu Raspberry Pi support matrix for the exact board and Ubuntu release you intend to use. It lists supported combinations and release-specific requirements, including minimum boot EEPROM dates where relevant. Do not rely on an older tutorial’s suggested release as a current compatibility recommendation.
- Choose a supported Ubuntu Server image for your exact Pi and check any EEPROM prerequisite before flashing.
- Plan boot storage separately from any storage you may need for local recordings. Ubuntu documents microSD and USB storage, and NVMe with a suitable HAT for Raspberry Pi 5.
- Match the source and intended output to the encoder path available on your board. A setting that works for one source or Pi is not proof that another combination will run continuously.
Install Ubuntu Server and prepare remote access
- Use the Ubuntu Raspberry Pi installation tutorial for the general process: flash a supported Server image to boot storage, insert it in the Pi, and power on the board.
- Complete first-boot setup and configure network access. A headless Pi can be administered remotely once it is on the network; confirm you can connect and manage it before moving on to the encoder.
- Install and configure the encoder appropriate to your input, but follow its current documentation for installation and source-specific options. The official sources listed here do not provide a validated, end-to-end FFmpeg recipe for a 24/7 Raspberry Pi YouTube stream, so do not treat an untested command as a reliable universal setup.
Use wired Ethernet where practical, provide stable power, and arrange ventilation for the board and any capture hardware. These are sensible operating precautions, not guarantees of uninterrupted streaming.

Get YouTube Live credentials and protect the stream key
YouTube’s encoder workflow requires an eligible, verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and follow the encoder setup flow to obtain the stream URL and stream key. Enter those values in your encoder as directed by YouTube’s encoder workflow.
Treat the stream key like a password: keep it out of public posts, screenshots, logs and shared configuration files. YouTube’s stream settings and key-management guidance explains how to manage or reset it. If it is exposed, reset it and update the encoder with the replacement.

Choose an ingest profile and test it before going live
For common RTMP or RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its published H.264 recommendations include the profiles below. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not Raspberry Pi performance guarantees.

- Configure the encoder to capture the intended source and audio, encode H.264 with CBR, use the chosen resolution and frame rate, and set a two-second keyframe interval.
- Use the YouTube stream URL and key from Live Control Room, then send a test feed before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
- Run a representative test with the movement, graphics and audio the real stream will contain. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream health, and watch for dropped frames, audio problems, overheating or encoder overload.
- Measure the available outbound bandwidth under realistic conditions. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom beyond the outgoing stream bitrate; its streaming tips also advise testing and monitoring stream health.
A speed test at one moment does not establish that the connection will remain stable all day. Wi-Fi interference, congestion, router resets and ISP interruptions can break the outgoing feed. Repeat the test at representative times and monitor the actual live session.
Plan for continuous operation and recovery
A 24/7 stream is an operating system, network and encoder task as well as a video task. Use reliable power, keep the Pi ventilated, and consider wired networking. Configure process supervision or automatic restart if appropriate for your setup, and decide how you will notice an encoder or network failure. A restart policy is not a guarantee that the same YouTube live event will resume; test the complete recovery path, including what happens after a network outage or reboot.

- Confirm the encoder can restart after a failure and that it reconnects as intended.
- Check what viewers see during a temporary uplink loss and who will receive an alert if the feed stops.
- Review temperature, CPU load, storage use and stream health during a long representative run rather than inferring 24/7 capability from a short test.
- Keep system and encoder configuration recoverable, but do not expose the stream key when saving or sharing it.
Understand YouTube’s archive limit for a 24/7 broadcast
YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. A stream that runs longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a single continuous 24/7 event is not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube replay. If an archive matters, arrange local recording or deliberately divide the broadcast into shorter sessions. Local recording needs its own storage plan; one disk holding the only copy is not a backup.
Before broadcasting, also confirm that you have the rights needed for every video, music track, image and other material in the feed. A live feed does not make copyrighted or reused material yours, and permission to stream should not be assumed from permission to watch or download. Review YouTube’s current rules for your channel and content, and keep records of permissions where applicable.

Troubleshoot common failures
