You can rebroadcast a scrim VOD on YouTube using an encoder stream set up in YouTube Live Control Room. Before you go live, confirm written rights for the specific footage and its audio, make the replay meaningfully useful with match-specific analysis, and keep a local recording: a YouTube livestream replay can remain on your channel, but streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Decide whether a livestream replay or regular upload fits
| Option | What viewers get | Work and archive considerations | Rights and copyright considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scheduled livestream replay | A live event with real-time chat, followed by a replay if YouTube captures the stream and you leave it available. | Requires encoder setup, a live preview check, monitoring, and a local recording. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. | Live streams are scanned for third-party content and may be interrupted. Archived streams can also receive Content ID claims after they end. |
| Upload the VOD as a regular video | On-demand viewing rather than a live event with real-time chat. | Does not require running an encoder during playback. The sources cited here do not establish a specific archive-reliability advantage or performance difference. | Rights are still necessary for the material you publish. This option avoids a live interruption, but does not establish that the footage or music is cleared. |
Choose a livestream when the scheduled viewing and live discussion are part of the experience. Choose an upload when viewers should watch on demand without a live event. Neither format makes an uncleared VOD safe to publish.
Clear rights for this specific scrim first
YouTube places responsibility for necessary rights on the channel provider. Its livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”
Owning a copy of the VOD, giving credit, or having a general relationship with the team does not by itself establish the necessary permissions. Get written permission for the actual scrim and confirm what it covers:

- Rights to game footage, player voices or webcams, team names and branding, and any music or other audio in the recording.
- Any tournament, league, team, or player terms that restrict rebroadcasts.
Also check the game publisher’s current content or esports policy and the relevant tournament or team agreement. Rules vary, and without the specific game, VOD owner, contract, and territory, there is no universal clearance rule for scrim footage.
Set up the YouTube encoder stream
YouTube supports encoder streams for gameplay and overlays. Its Live Control Room stream-settings guide explains how to configure a stream. Exact interface labels may change, so check the current Live Control Room before scheduling.

- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube’s get started guide says a channel must be verified and must not have had a livestream restriction in the previous 90 days; it also states a minimum livestream age of 16. Check the current Help page for the rules that apply to your channel and location.
- Schedule or configure the event in Live Control Room. Enter a clear title and description that identify the match, teams, date, and the fact that this is a scrim replay. Set the audience and visibility appropriately, and review any available DVR or Live Redirect settings if you plan to use them.
- Choose the encoder path that fits your setup. YouTube describes encoders as a way to send gameplay and overlays, and says professional-grade hardware encoders can suit higher-production-value events. It does not require every creator to buy hardware or endorse a particular model.
- Connect the encoder with the event’s stream key. Use the stream key shown for the intended event. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to the channel.
- Review reused settings before starting. If you use YouTube’s option to reuse stream settings, it copies metadata, settings, and the stream key. Check each item and replace anything belonging to an earlier event, especially the title, description, scheduled details, and key where appropriate.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Confirm that video appears, audio is audible and in sync, overlays are legible, and the correct VOD is playing. Follow YouTube’s live-streaming tips to test quality and verify playback before you begin the event.
- Check playback beyond the encoder. Open the watch page and verify that the stream is accessible as expected; check on a phone as well as the device used for setup. Keep a local recording running as a separate copy.
Make the replay valuable and distinct
A scrim replay is more useful when viewers can understand what they are watching and why it matters. Add a host introduction, match context, coaching notes, timestamps, or live analysis. Make the added value specific to that scrim: explain a decision point, rotation, communication pattern, practice objective, or lesson rather than giving every replay identical packaging and leaving it unattended.
This is an editorial recommendation, not a monetization guarantee. YouTube’s channel monetization policies say reused content can be eligible when it adds meaningful original commentary or educational value. One allowed example is “Replays of a sports tournament where you explain the moves a competitor did to succeed”. That example is not a blanket exemption for esports VODs or scrim broadcasts.

Keep copyright compliance separate from monetization eligibility
These are different reviews. A team or rights holder may authorize a replay, yet YouTube can still find that a channel’s reused material lacks meaningful original contribution. Conversely, added analysis does not grant rights to game footage, player audio, music, or a tournament feed.
YouTube says its inauthentic-content policy covers repetitive or mass-produced material, and reused-content review applies at channel level, separately from copyright enforcement. A channel can therefore have permission and still fail monetization review if viewers cannot see a meaningful original contribution. Assess each replay on both questions: are the rights cleared, and does the channel add distinct value?

Understand live copyright matching and interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it identifies such content, it may show a placeholder image, issue a warning, temporarily interrupt the stream, or terminate it if the content remains. An archived livestream can receive a Content ID claim after it ends.
A license alone may not prevent a live interruption. YouTube says a rights holder may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID. If you have permission and still expect a match, ask the rights holder to confirm the correct channel is allowlisted before the event; do not assume a written license automatically changes YouTube’s matching response.

Protect the archive and check it after the event
YouTube says livestreams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording even when the stream is shorter. After the event, check the replay’s archive status and visibility in YouTube Studio; whether viewers can watch it depends on capture and the visibility setting you choose.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder connects, but the preview is blank or shows the wrong event. | The wrong stream key or event settings may be in use. | Check the event in Live Control Room, confirm the encoder uses its intended stream key, and inspect reused settings for stale metadata or credentials. |
| Viewers cannot hear the game or commentary, or audio is out of sync. | The encoder’s audio source or timing is not correct. | Check audio in the preview and on the watch page before starting. Verify the intended audio sources and make a test recording to catch sync problems. |
| The stream shows a copyright warning or is interrupted. | YouTube may have matched third-party content in the VOD, including music or another broadcast. | Stop or replace the matched material where appropriate. Confirm the relevant rights and, if licensed, ask the rights holder whether your channel needs Content ID allowlisting. |
| The stream ends, but no replay appears. | The archive may not have been captured, or the replay may not be visible under its current settings. | Check archive status and visibility in Studio, then use your local recording if YouTube did not capture the stream. Do not rely on YouTube capture for a stream over 12 hours. |
| The channel has permission, but monetization is denied or at risk. | Permission and YouTube’s channel-level reused-content review are separate. | Review whether each replay adds clear, original analysis or educational value and whether the channel’s uploads are repetitive or minimally changed. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that should keep an uploaded scrim replay looping between tournaments without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud service from Yorker Media. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
- Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Before using any rebroadcast setup, make sure you have the rights to the VOD and its audio. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
