The first approach captures gameplay as it happens; the second broadcasts prerecorded videos. Before choosing, check that you have the rights to the game footage and audio, and that your channel is eligible to livestream.
Choose between live console gameplay and a prerecorded loop
These are different setups. A capture device sends a console’s current output to a computer, where OBS can encode and stream it. That is the route for showing a game being played live. A prerecorded loop instead broadcasts video files you have already recorded; it does not capture a console session as it happens.
- Choose console capture if the stream should show a live game session. The console, capture device, computer, encoder, and network connection must remain available while you stream.
- Choose a prerecorded loop if you want a repeatable broadcast made from recordings. You can run the encoder locally or use a cloud-hosted looping service.
For either route, plan for stream length and archiving separately. YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume an indefinitely running broadcast will produce one complete automatic archive.
Check livestream eligibility and prepare your setup
YouTube Help currently says a channel must be verified, must have had no livestreaming restrictions during the previous 90 days, and must meet the minimum age requirement of 16 to livestream. Check YouTube’s current requirements before launch, because platform rules can change. First-time livestream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so activate it well before the planned broadcast.

For console capture, the required hardware depends on the console, computer, and operating system. A capture device is the typical way to bring console video into a computer. If you want to play on a TV while capturing, check whether the device supports passthrough and whether it works with your console. OBS also describes capturing supported console remote-play apps in a computer window as an alternative.
Compatibility can rule out a setup: OBS says Nintendo Switch systems work with capture devices while docked, but the Switch Lite cannot be docked and is not compatible with that capture-device path. OBS advises macOS and Linux users to prefer capture devices that support UVC for operating-system compatibility. Confirm the exact device’s compatibility with your hardware before buying; no particular model is established here.

Set up OBS for a console capture
- Connect the console to a compatible capture device, following that device’s connection instructions. Connect the device to the computer running OBS.
- In OBS, add the device as a Video Capture Source and select the connected capture device. Confirm that the game picture appears in the preview.
- Check that the game’s audio is reaching the stream as well as its video. Make a short test recording or private test broadcast and confirm that both are present and in sync before scheduling a long stream.
- Keep the console’s output, capture device, computer, and network connection stable for the entire live session. A local encoder depends on the computer and connection staying available; recovery from a local failure is your responsibility.
OBS and YouTube’s cited instructions do not establish one bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval suitable for every console, capture device, encoder, and network. Use settings supported by your source and check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations rather than relying on a universal preset. If the picture or sound is unstable, test at a lower load before committing to a continuous broadcast.
Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or reuse an existing one.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from YouTube into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a recording.
- Start sending the stream from OBS or your chosen encoder. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Depending on the scheduled-stream workflow, you may also need to press Go live in the control room after the preview appears.
- When finished, end the stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder as applicable. Check the resulting archive rather than assuming an especially long broadcast has been saved as one complete video.
Loop prerecorded retro gameplay footage
If your goal is to repeat recorded gameplay rather than show an active console session, prepare the video files first and choose where the loop will run. YouTube’s encoder help lists software options for continuous streams, including Gyre, which it describes as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. It is an optional automation route, not a requirement.

You can also run an encoder and source locally, but that means leaving the computer and network connection running and handling interruptions yourself. Whichever route you choose, test the full playlist, its transitions, audio, and stream connection before treating it as an always-on broadcast. Automation does not establish that you have permission to use the game visuals or music.
Clear game and audio rights before broadcasting
A working capture setup is not permission to broadcast the material it captures. Check the rules for the specific game publisher and any third-party music, artwork, or other content in the footage. A publisher’s policy for its own games does not grant rights to another publisher’s material.

Nintendo games
Nintendo’s guidelines cover livestreams and encourage creators to add their own creative input and commentary. They say merely copying or livestreaming gameplay footage without the creator’s own creative or editorial input is outside the guidelines, subject to the stated exception for footage shared through Nintendo system features. Nintendo also says users must obtain any necessary permissions for third-party intellectual property. Review the current Nintendo guidance and any game-specific rules for the title you plan to show.
SEGA games
SEGA’s general guidance applies to gameplay videos made by individual users using legitimate copies of SEGA products. It calls for new elements such as commentary or narration, says third-party intellectual property—including music—requires appropriate permissions, and limits profit-driven use to its stated platform-partner exception. SEGA says product-specific rules take priority if they conflict with the general guidance. These terms apply to SEGA products, not as a license for other publishers’ games.

YouTube Content ID checks
YouTube says all livestreams are scanned for matches to third-party content. It may replace a live stream with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate the broadcast when it identifies third-party content. A license by itself may not prevent interruption: YouTube says a rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. If you archive the stream, Content ID claims may also arrive after the broadcast ends. Resolve rights and any necessary allowlisting before relying on a long-running stream.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
OBS shows a black screen or no console picture
- Check that the console is connected to the capture device and that OBS’s Video Capture Source is set to the connected device.
- Confirm compatibility among the console, capture device, computer, and operating system. For a Switch, the capture-device route requires a docked system; it does not work with Switch Lite.
- For macOS or Linux, check whether the device supports UVC, which OBS recommends for operating-system compatibility.
YouTube does not show a preview
- Check that the encoder is sending to the server URL and stream key for the selected stream in Live Control Room.
- Confirm that livestreaming has been enabled for the channel; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Wait for the preview before going live. Some scheduled-stream workflows require the separate Go live action in Live Control Room.
The stream stops or is interrupted
- For a local setup, check whether the computer, encoder, console, capture device, or network connection stopped working. A locally run encoder depends on these staying available.
- If YouTube identifies third-party content, check for a copyright interruption. A license may not be enough if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel.
The archive is incomplete or split from your expectations
YouTube’s cited encoder instructions state automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not an indefinite single archive. Decide in advance how you will preserve footage for a longer broadcast rather than assuming one complete recording will appear automatically.
