To record HD video locally, save a recording to your device rather than relying on a live-stream copy: use OBS Studio when you need to capture or combine a screen, camera, game, or audio sources, or record directly with a smartphone for a simple camera shot. Choose an output resolution your source and hardware can handle, make a short test recording, and check both picture and sound before the important take.

Choose the recording method

Use OBS Studio for screen or multi-source recording

OBS Studio lets you arrange sources such as a display, window, game, camera, or capture card in a scene. It is the better fit when you need to capture computer activity or combine sources in one recording.

Use a smartphone for a direct camera recording

A phone is usually the simpler choice for recording a person, object, or scene without a computer capture setup. For conventional widescreen video, hold or position the phone horizontally and keep it stable. A smartphone tripod or phone tripod with holder is optional; a stable improvised support can also work.

Record HD video in OBS Studio

  1. Create a scene and add sources. In OBS, add a scene, then add the content you want to record, such as a display, window, game, camera, or capture card. Arrange and size each source in the preview so the framing is right.
  2. Set the canvas and recording resolution. Open Settings → Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the space in which OBS fits your sources; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the size of the recording. Choose an HD output size appropriate to your source and computer. Scaling a source up does not add detail it never captured, and a mismatch between source, canvas, and output can affect detail.
  3. Choose a frame rate. OBS commonly offers 30 and 60 fps. Higher frame rates can make fast motion look smoother, but 60 fps can be more demanding. Select a rate that suits the material and the computer, then test for smooth playback and encoding problems.
  4. Choose a recording quality and destination. In Settings → Output, select where recordings should be saved and choose a quality preset based on the balance you need among image quality, file size, and system load. Advanced output mode provides more control over recording and streaming settings; OBS’s Recording knowledge base points to guides for advanced recording, formats, and standard output.
  5. Set up audio and record a test. Confirm the intended audio devices, then use OBS’s recording controls to make a short clip. Play it back to check framing, picture, sound, and that the file saved to the expected folder before recording a long take.

Understand OBS recording quality and file size

OBS Project’s Recording Encoder Presets Guide describes the presets as different quality, file-size, and performance trade-offs:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Same as stream: Uses the stream encoder settings. OBS says recordings cannot be paused when this preset is selected.
  • High Quality: Aims for high quality with a medium file size. OBS Project describes it as producing “a high quality video with a medium file size.”
  • Indistinguishable: Offers higher quality with larger files and may affect performance on older or weaker hardware, depending on the encoder.
  • Lossless: Uses the CPU encoder and creates very large files. OBS Project’s 2023 guide estimates around 7 GB per minute for lossless recording; that is its estimate for this preset, not a general rate for other settings or encoders.

There is no one bitrate or file format that is right for every local HD recording. The appropriate choices depend on the source, encoder, editing workflow, operating system, and available hardware. Use OBS’s relevant format and recording guidance for the options available in your setup, and verify that the resulting file opens in the software you plan to use.

Record HD video directly on a smartphone

  1. Select an HD recording setting your phone supports. Choose resolution and frame rate in the camera app’s video settings. The University of London’s 2020 home-recording guide recommends 24, 25, or 30 fps for its educational recording use case; that preference is not a universal rule. A phone may offer up to 1080p or 4K, but higher resolution can mean larger, less convenient files.
  2. Frame and stabilize the shot. For standard widescreen video, record horizontally. The University of London guide says a smartphone’s back camera is typically better than its front camera, though it can be harder to frame yourself. A tripod with a phone holder can steady the shot, but a stable improvised support is also an option.
  3. Lock focus and exposure when useful. For a mostly static subject, the guide suggests using the phone’s auto-focus and auto-exposure lock where available. Phone interfaces vary, so check the camera app’s controls and confirm focus and brightness in a short clip.
  4. Reduce avoidable interruptions. Airplane mode can help prevent calls or notifications from interrupting a take. Confirm how your device behaves in airplane mode and whether you need Wi-Fi or another connection before relying on it.
  5. Make a short test and review it. Check that the image is sharp, the framing is right, sound is audible, and the file is saved and playable before recording the full video.

For context, the University of London guide reported examples of about 60 MB per minute at 1080p 30 fps and about 170 MB per minute at 4K 30 fps on an iPhone in its 2020 guide. These device- and setting-specific examples are not universal estimates for current phones.

Troubleshoot common recording problems

  • The recording looks soft or lacks detail: Check the source quality as well as OBS’s Base (Canvas) and Output (Scaled) resolutions. Increasing output resolution cannot recreate detail absent from a camera or source.
  • Motion stutters or recording performance suffers: Make a short test at a lower frame rate or less demanding quality preset. Higher frame rates and more demanding encoder settings can place greater load on the system.
  • The file is unexpectedly large: Check the selected quality preset and resolution. OBS’s Indistinguishable and especially Lossless choices can use more storage; lossless is not a practical default when space is limited.
  • Audio is missing or wrong: Check OBS’s selected audio devices and make another short test recording. Review playback rather than assuming the correct input was captured.
  • The phone video is shaky or poorly framed: Stabilize the phone on a firm surface or optional phone tripod mount, orient it horizontally for widescreen output, and review a test clip before continuing.
  • The recording was interrupted: For phone capture, consider airplane mode if appropriate and check for calls or notifications. For any setup, test the complete arrangement—including audio and storage destination—before a long recording.
