To prevent overheating during a sustained FFmpeg stream, first measure the Raspberry Pi’s temperature while the stream is actually running. Then reduce avoidable encoding and preview load, improve airflow, and add cooling that fits your exact Pi model if throttling continues. Raspberry Pi’s thermal management is designed to protect the board, but throttling can reduce the performance available to encode and stream video.

Check the temperature during a real stream

Do not judge by how warm the case feels. The useful reading is the SoC temperature while FFmpeg is doing the sustained work that causes the problem.

  1. Start the stream you intend to run. Use the same input, resolution, frame rate, filters, and encoder you plan to use in production.
  2. Open a terminal and run vcgencmd measure_temp. This returns an instantaneous SoC temperature reading. Check it repeatedly during the stream rather than relying on a reading taken at idle.
  3. Look for sustained temperatures approaching the thermal-management range. Raspberry Pi documentation says Arm cores are progressively throttled between 80°C and 85°C; at 85°C, both Arm cores and GPU are throttled. These are performance-control thresholds, not evidence that reaching the limit immediately damages the SoC.

An alternative is cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp. That value is in thousandths of a degree Celsius, so divide it by 1,000: for example, 72000 represents 72°C. Raspberry Pi cautions that Linux temperature measurements can be inaccurate because of SoC architecture and monitoring code; its documentation describes vcgencmd measure_temp as an accurate, instantaneous reading that communicates directly with the GPU.

Thermal management reduces voltage and clock frequencies to give the processor a chance to cool. That protection can lower performance under compute-heavy workloads such as prolonged video processing. If your stream’s encoding falls behind or becomes unstable as temperature rises, throttling may be part of the cause.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Reduce the work FFmpeg has to do

Start with the workload before buying a fan. Cooling can help the Pi sustain performance, but it does not make an unnecessarily demanding encoding pipeline more efficient.

Use hardware encoding only when your board and pipeline support it

Hardware encoding support differs by Raspberry Pi generation and software path. Raspberry Pi’s H.264 documentation describes the Pi 4’s h264_v4l2m2m as a fixed-function hardware encoder. It discusses software libx264 modes for Pi 5; do not assume Pi 5 has the same hardware H.264 encoder as Pi 4.

Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid camera workflow can use an FFmpeg/libav backend to encode audio and video, and its documentation says libav uses hardware H.264 encoding when present. That does not mean arbitrary FFmpeg inputs, filters, or builds will automatically use hardware encoding. Check what your exact board, operating system, FFmpeg build, and input pipeline support, then verify that the running stream is using the intended encoder.

Turn off an unnecessary preview

If you are capturing through the documented Raspberry Pi camera workflow and do not need a local preview, disable the preview window. Raspberry Pi notes that doing so can free CPU cycles. A preview is useful for framing or monitoring, but it adds work that may not be needed once the stream is configured.

Lower resolution or frame rate if the Pi still cannot keep up

Reducing capture resolution can make it easier to achieve the frame rate you need. Lowering resolution or frame rate also changes what viewers receive, so make the smallest reduction that brings encoding and temperature under control. A faster software preset can reduce encoding work too, but may trade compression efficiency or quality for speed; Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 low-latency example uses ultrafast and zerolatency, not as a universal YouTube recipe but as settings with a quality-and-efficiency tradeoff.

Improve airflow and choose cooling for your Pi

Once avoidable workload is addressed, make sure heat can leave the board. Raspberry Pi says a heatsink can help control core temperature and performance, particularly inside a case, and that airflow across the heatsink improves cooling. A small fan or heatsink may reduce throttling; active cooling is the stronger option for sustained heavy operation.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Check the exact model and case before buying. Raspberry Pi names the Pi 4 Case Fan for Pi 4. For Pi 5, it names the Active Cooler and Pi 5 Case with fan; these connect to the board’s four-pin JST-SH fan connector. Confirm compatibility with your specific board revision and enclosure.
  • Do not block ventilation. Leave room around vents and avoid placing the Pi where warm exhaust air is trapped. Airflow across a heatsink is more useful than a heatsink sealed inside a poorly ventilated enclosure.
  • Consider a fan for a sustained high-load stream. A passive heatsink may be enough for some workloads, but Raspberry Pi’s 2023 Pi 5 thermal article reports that passive cooling may be insufficient for heavy loads extending beyond 200 or 300 seconds in its tested conditions. That finding is specific to those tests, not a rule that every stream requires active cooling.
  • Mount vertically if practical. Raspberry Pi’s hardware guidance says vertical mounting can slightly improve heat dissipation.

For Pi 5, the official fan-control curve starts at 50°C and increases fan speed at documented thresholds of 50°C, 60°C, 67.5°C, and 75°C. Those are fan-control thresholds, not the SoC’s throttling limit or a universal temperature target for other Raspberry Pi models.

A practical troubleshooting order

  1. Measure under load. Record repeated vcgencmd measure_temp readings during the full stream, including after it has run long enough to reach its usual problem point.
  2. Check the encoding path. Confirm that your board and FFmpeg/capture workflow support the encoder you selected and that the actual stream is using it.
  3. Remove needless work. Disable local preview if it is not needed. Review filters and other processing that may add CPU load.
  4. Reduce the capture demand carefully. Try a lower resolution or frame rate if acceptable, then check both stream quality and temperature again.
  5. Add compatible cooling and airflow. Choose a heatsink, fan, active cooler, or ventilated case suited to the exact Pi model. Repeat the same sustained-stream check to see whether throttling has stopped.

Keep YouTube settings and the stream key safe

There is no single FFmpeg command established as correct for every Raspberry Pi generation, operating-system version, camera input, and YouTube ingest setup. YouTube’s current encoder and ingest requirements can change, and the Raspberry Pi examples do not establish current bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution, or protocol settings for all streams. Check YouTube’s current live-stream guidance for your account and test the complete pipeline on the hardware you will use before relying on it.

A YouTube stream key is a credential: do not publish it, include it in a public command, or show it in a screenshot. Enter it only in a private configuration or the intended platform interface, and keep any file containing it from being publicly served or shared.

An older Raspberry Pi post described a Docker/FFmpeg YouTube Live tutorial, while a 2022 community post reported one user’s hardware-encoded stream and YouTube warnings about resolution and bitrate. Those examples are historical or individual experiences, not current platform requirements or universal configurations.
