To reduce gaps when switching videos on a 24/7 YouTube stream, keep the encoder’s output connected to YouTube and switch files in the playout layer feeding that encoder. Avoid stopping and restarting the outgoing stream for each video. YouTube’s documentation explains its encoder ingest workflow, but does not give a guaranteed gap-free recipe for switching between files.
Why video switches can interrupt a live stream
YouTube receives a continuous encoded feed from an encoder using the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. If changing videos also stops that encoder output, YouTube may see the feed end or interrupt. The practical approach is to keep the output connection running while changing the media source upstream.
That distinction matters: YouTube documents how an encoder sends a stream and how its API handles broadcast objects, but those documents do not prescribe a seamless playlist transition between local video files.
Set up switching without stopping the encoder
- Configure the YouTube stream once. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and use the displayed stream URL and stream key in your encoder. Keep the key private.
- Keep one continuous encoder output. Configure the encoder to send continuously to YouTube. Do not stop or disconnect its output when a video finishes.
- Switch the media upstream. Use your playout software, playlist, or other source-management layer to select the next file while the encoder continues sending. Check that the source switch does not cause the outgoing video and audio feed to stop.
- Test transitions in the complete chain. Run a transition from each type of file and source you plan to use, then confirm in YouTube that the live stream remains active and the next picture and sound arrive as expected. YouTube’s documentation does not guarantee gap-free performance for a particular playout tool.
Encoder settings that support a stable feed
Match your encoder to YouTube’s current published recommendations. These settings help configure the ingest correctly; they do not guarantee that a local source change will be interruption-free.

- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Video bitrate: YouTube lists 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 as recommended values.
- Audio and format: Check YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the supported format, audio configuration, and other parameters for your stream rather than assuming one profile fits every encoder.
Choose an ingest protocol deliberately
RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube describes RTMPS as regular RTMP video tunneled through an SSL connection. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it and you want encrypted ingest. YouTube describes RTMP and RTMPS as suitable for ordinary low-latency live workflows.
HLS
HLS is a supported alternative for applicable workflows, but it is segment-based and generally has higher latency than RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube’s HLS guidance calls for transport-stream segments lasting 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Moving to HLS does not, by itself, prevent a gap when the source changes.

DASH
DASH is also segment-based and generally has higher latency than RTMP/RTMPS. Choose a protocol based on your encoder, workflow, and latency needs; none of these protocol choices substitutes for keeping the playout-to-encoder feed continuous.
Do not confuse broadcast objects with file transitions
YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes the continuing stream from broadcast/video objects. In its 24/7 example, one broadcast stays live while another is made live and later completed. Google’s documentation says, “However, you don’t stop streaming video since the 24/7 broadcast continues.” This describes API handling of broadcasts; it is not a file-switching recipe and does not establish that a given encoder or playlist can transition without a gap.

Compare playout approaches by their failure behavior
Software playout feeding an encoder, a dedicated hardware encoder, and a managed cloud studio can all be considered for scheduled or continuous prerecorded playback. The YouTube encoder directory lists AJA HELO Plus and Upstream as relevant offerings, but its listing does not establish seamless transition performance for either. Before choosing a setup, ask how it handles the following:
- Can it queue files and switch them without interrupting encoder output?
- What recovery or fallback behavior is documented if a file, source, or connection fails?
- What unattended-operation monitoring is available?
- How much control do you have over codec, bitrate, and latency?
- Are failure modes and recovery steps clearly documented?
Troubleshoot gaps and interruptions
- The YouTube live stream ends at every file change: Check whether the encoder is stopping or disconnecting when the current file ends. Keep encoder output connected and switch the source upstream.
- The encoder stays connected but the picture goes black: Check the playout transition behavior and whether the next file is ready when the current one ends. Test the complete sequence before leaving it unattended; YouTube’s general ingest guidance does not diagnose a specific playout tool.
- Video returns but audio drops or arrives late: Inspect the audio handoff and format settings in the playout and encoder chain. Test picture and sound together at each transition.
- The stream is unstable beyond transitions: Compare the encoder’s rate control, keyframe frequency, bitrate, format, and audio settings with YouTube’s current recommendations. For RTMP/RTMPS, use CBR and the recommended keyframe interval.
- You are considering HLS to solve the gap: First verify that your workflow meets YouTube’s segment and rolling-playlist requirements. HLS has different latency characteristics and is not a guaranteed cure for source-switch interruptions.
