How to Monitor a YouTube 24/7 Stream for Outages with FFmpeg Logs

A practical guide to combining FFmpeg process and progress monitoring with YouTube Live Control Room health checks to detect and diagnose 24/7 stream outages.

Monitor a continuous YouTube broadcast at two ends: watch FFmpeg’s process and machine-readable progress locally, and check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. FFmpeg can show that the encoder is active; it cannot prove YouTube is receiving the stream or that viewers can play it. For dependable outage detection, combine those signals with a check of the actual stream.

What to monitor: encoder, YouTube ingest, and playback

There are three different questions to answer during an outage:

  • Is FFmpeg alive and advancing? Process status and FFmpeg progress records indicate local encoder activity.
  • Is YouTube receiving a healthy stream? Live Control Room reports stream health and status, including error messages and real-time analytics.
  • Can viewers actually watch and hear it? Check the watch page and the stream’s audio and video, preferably from an independent device or network.

Treat these as separate signals. A running process can be disconnected from YouTube, and a healthy dashboard signal does not guarantee smooth playback for every viewer. YouTube recommends previewing before going live, checking accessibility, and monitoring audio and video quality.

How to monitor FFmpeg logs and progress

Save persistent, timestamped logs

FFmpeg writes log messages to stderr by default. Add a timestamped log format and send stderr to a persistent file so you can correlate encoder events with YouTube’s timestamped errors and host or service-manager events. One useful option pattern, if supported by your installed FFmpeg build, is -loglevel repeat+level+datetime+info. Confirm the accepted options with the version installed on your streaming host.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

FFmpeg’s -report option or the FFREPORT environment variable can save the command and log output. Protect report files: the command line may contain a stream key if it was supplied directly in the output URL. Restrict file access, avoid sharing raw reports, and remove or redact credentials before sending logs for support.

Use machine-readable progress for heartbeat alerts

Human-readable logs are useful for diagnosis, but a supervisor or monitoring script can more reliably detect a stalled encoder by consuming FFmpeg’s key-value progress output. Add -progress pipe:1 and set -stats_period to control how often updates are emitted. Each update consists of key-value lines and ends with a progress field.

Route stdout progress to its own consumer and stderr logs to a file; do not mix the two streams if a parser depends on clean key-value records. The consumer should record when each update arrives. Choose a stale-heartbeat threshold based on your configured interval and acceptable outage window: there is no universal FFmpeg or YouTube threshold.

A progress=continue record means FFmpeg emitted a progress update. It is not confirmation that YouTube ingest is healthy.

Illustrative command shape

This is a monitoring pattern, not a complete broadcast command. Supply your actual input, encoding and mapping settings, and YouTube RTMPS output. A real deployment also needs a wrapper, service, or monitoring agent to consume stdout and alert on stale progress.

ffmpeg -hide_banner
  -loglevel repeat+level+datetime+info
  -stats_period 5
  -progress pipe:1
  [input and encoding options]
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
  2>>ffmpeg.log

The example uses a five-second reporting interval as a configuration illustration, not a recommended universal alert threshold. Keep the stream key out of shared logs and process listings where your environment permits; protect configuration files and reports that contain it.

Set up alerts across both sides of the stream

  1. Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor or service manager. Capture its exit status and use a deliberate restart and retry policy rather than assuming a process will recover by itself.
  2. Persist and rotate stderr logs. Include timestamps, ensure the log destination has adequate disk space, and restrict access to any reports that could contain credentials.
  3. Parse progress separately. Record heartbeat arrival times from -progress output and alert if updates stop beyond your locally chosen threshold.
  4. Check YouTube Live Control Room. Watch stream health and status, and note the time and wording of any platform error messages. YouTube distinguishes critical red errors from moderate yellow issues.
  5. Verify the viewer experience. Check the watch page from another device or network and confirm both audio and video. Keep a human check in the process for defects an automated heartbeat cannot identify.
  6. Test the complete setup and failover. Preview before going live, verify accessibility, inspect any local archive where applicable, and test a backup encoder path rather than assuming it will work during an incident.

YouTube advises leaving bandwidth headroom: its guidance recommends upload capacity with a 20% margin. It also cautions, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.”

How do I know if my YouTube livestream went offline?

Look for agreement between the three monitoring layers rather than relying on one status light. An FFmpeg exit alert, a stale progress heartbeat, a Live Control Room health error, a missing preview, or a failed watch-page check are distinct clues. Record their timestamps so you can compare them with each other and with host logs.

Why does FFmpeg say it is running when my YouTube stream is down?

FFmpeg’s process and progress output describe local activity, not the full path to the audience. The encoder may still be processing frames while its output connection, configured stream URL or key, outbound network, or YouTube ingest has a problem. YouTube’s own health messages and the public playback check cover layers FFmpeg cannot establish by itself.

Do not treat input reconnect options as a general guarantee that FFmpeg will reconnect its RTMP output to YouTube. Reconnect controls are protocol-specific; verify the behavior relevant to your installed build and output protocol instead of assuming a flag solves output recovery.

The process exists, but progress stopped

Until you identify the cause, treat the encoder as stalled. Inspect the latest logs, source, and host health; check that the progress consumer itself is working; and compare the last heartbeat with your configured reporting interval and local threshold.

FFmpeg progresses, but YouTube has no preview or reports unhealthy input

Read YouTube’s specific message, then check the output connection, ingest URL and stream-key configuration, outbound connectivity, and available upload bandwidth. A local progress heartbeat does not establish successful ingest. Keep the key confidential; if it has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.

Live Control Room looks healthy, but viewers report failure

Test the watch page from a separate device or network and inspect audio and video quality. YouTube recommends checking stream accessibility and continuously monitoring the actual audio and video, not just encoder activity.

The stream drops during a network disruption

Check the host’s outbound connection and whether the link has enough upload capacity and headroom for the stream. YouTube warns that connectivity disruption can break a stream. Review host and network logs around the time of the incident, then test the full path again before relying on it unattended.

Keep stream keys and alerts safe

  • Treat the YouTube stream key as a credential. Limit access to FFmpeg configuration, logs, reports, alert payloads, and process information that might expose it.
  • Do not paste a raw report or command line into a public issue or chat without checking for the key and other sensitive values.
  • If a key is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder’s protected configuration.
  • Make alerts identify the failure layer and timestamp without including the stream key.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep an uploaded documentary or playlist live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
