Platform status alone is not documented as a guarantee that viewers are receiving moving video, and OBS alert overlays are not outage monitors.
What automatic monitoring needs to check
A stream can appear connected while the picture viewers receive is frozen or black. Treat these as separate checks:
- Broadcast health: whether the platform is receiving the encoder’s stream and reporting errors.
- Delivered playback: whether the published stream is visibly moving and playing as expected.
- Notification: whether someone—or a validated monitoring system—will learn about a problem without watching the dashboard continuously.
The official YouTube, Twitch, and OBS guidance cited here describes platform and encoder status, but does not establish that those indicators detect every stalled-video failure or provide a verified third-party service for unattended frozen-picture alerts.
Monitor a YouTube stream while it is live
Use Live Control Room for stream health
During a YouTube broadcast, open YouTube Live Control Room and check stream status, error messages, and the real-time metrics shown there, including concurrent viewers and duration. Status errors can help identify a problem with the incoming stream; viewer and duration metrics provide context, not proof that every viewer sees moving video.

Use playback observation for black or frozen video
If the failure you need to catch is a stalled or black picture, check the stream’s actual playback separately from the encoder status. For unattended monitoring, use a playback observation or a monitoring method that has been validated to inspect the rendered feed—not merely whether a page or stream endpoint responds. The cited platform documentation does not verify a particular service for this purpose, so test the exact method and alert path with your own stream before relying on it.
Use YouTube Analytics only for after-the-fact review
YouTube’s post-stream report can include concurrent viewers and chat messages. The help page says these metrics become available within minutes after a stream ends. That makes the report useful for retrospective review, but not a replacement for an alert during an unattended broadcast.

Monitor a Twitch broadcast
For a study stream on Twitch, Twitch Inspector provides stream-health graphs and a list of the broadcaster’s streams from the prior seven days. Twitch says only the broadcaster can inspect their own streams there. Use it to review connection health and recent diagnostics; it is not documented as a detector of every black or frozen playback failure.
Understand Disconnect Protection
Twitch Disconnect Protection can display an interruption message for up to 90 seconds while a supported encoder attempts to reconnect. If reconnection does not happen within that window, the stream ends. This is a brief continuity measure, not an unattended uptime monitor; confirm its behavior with your encoder and setup before depending on it.

Check the encoder connection when health degrades
OBS connects to the destination platform; it does not operate the streaming servers. If OBS reports an unstable connection, use the OBS connection troubleshooting guidance. It includes trying a different ingest server and investigating local-network or security-software causes. These steps help diagnose encoder-to-platform connectivity; they do not independently establish that the public playback is visually healthy.
Do not confuse stream alerts with outage alerts
OBS says it does not directly provide stream alerts. You can embed third-party alert overlays in OBS using a Browser Source, but an overlay displaying configured events is not evidence that an outage has been detected. Twitch’s alert sets similarly appear in a broadcast through a Browser Source and cover community events such as follows, subscriptions, and raids—not stream availability.

For an unattended setup, test the full chain: create a known interruption or playback failure where safe, confirm the condition is detected, and verify that the notification reaches the person who needs to respond. Do not assume an overlay, platform dashboard, or reconnect feature sends an alert unless that behavior has been confirmed for your configuration.
