Prefer a randomized, contemporaneous test; measure new memberships against eligible viewers or logged exposure opportunities, not just raw totals. A rise after a promotion is suggestive, but by itself it does not show the promotion caused the increase.
Choose the outcome before you start
Define the question as: “How many additional new channel memberships occurred because viewers were exposed to this specific promotion during the test window?” Use new sign-ups—or members gained—as the primary outcome.
Keep other membership measures separate. YouTube distinguishes sign-ups and cancellations, members gained and lost, active members, total members, and transactions. Total members can include people who canceled but retain access through the remainder of a billing period, so total membership is not a substitute for new sign-ups. YouTube’s membership analytics guidance describes the available measures.
- Primary outcome: new sign-ups or members gained during the defined period.
- Context: cancellations, active and total members, transactions, stream uptime, and audience size.
- Do not combine unlike outcomes: revenue, gift membership redemptions, cancellations, and new paid sign-ups answer different questions.
Pick a comparison that can answer a causal question

Google’s A/B guidance says, “Each variant is shown to a random sample of users at the same time.” That describes the principle of a randomized comparison; it does not mean YouTube provides a built-in experiment feature for on-stream membership messages. For a public 24/7 stream, randomized time blocks are a practical adaptation of the principle, not a native YouTube test.

Set up a fair test for a continuous stream
1. Freeze the promotion and the test window
Write down the exact message or creative, whether it is spoken or on screen, its destination, and its scheduled start and end times. Keep the offer, placement, and frequency consistent across promotion blocks where practical. Log what actually appeared or was said, including any missed or extended placements.
YouTube membership guidance describes channel /join links and an introductory video shown in the membership window. Use a clear, consistent destination such as the channel’s membership join flow, and record which destination the promotion uses. See YouTube’s channel membership guidance.

2. Assign comparable blocks before looking at results
When viewer-level assignment is unavailable, create time blocks that are comparable in duration and expected audience conditions. Randomly assign blocks to promotion or control in advance, rotating across days and dayparts rather than putting all promotion blocks in high-traffic hours and all control blocks in quieter hours. Decide the schedule before reviewing sign-up outcomes.
A control block means the test promotion is absent; it does not necessarily mean viewers saw no other channel messaging. Keep other promotions and stream conditions as consistent as possible, and log unavoidable differences.

3. Keep an exposure and operations log
YouTube’s published membership reporting does not establish a native per-promotion exposure-to-sign-up metric. Maintain a separate log so the denominator and the actual test conditions are visible.
- Assigned condition, block start and end, and whether the block followed its assignment.
- Actual promotion start and end, format, frequency, and destination.
- Eligible viewers or measured exposure opportunities for each block, using a consistent definition.
- Stream uptime, interruptions, audience changes, and major concurrent events.
- Other promotions or channel changes that could affect memberships.
Do not treat a scheduled placement as an exposure if it did not run. Report assigned and actual exposure opportunities separately.

Retrieve the membership outcomes and calculate the result
- Set the reporting period. In YouTube Studio, open the Memberships tab and the relevant membership audience or revenue views in Analytics. Choose custom dates covering the test blocks, and keep the included dates and hours consistent with your log.
- Record the distinct outcome measures. Capture sign-ups and cancellations from the Memberships tab, and members gained, lost, active or total members, and transactions where relevant from Analytics. YouTube says the Memberships tab reports sign-ups and cancellations and provides member-level views; Analytics reports members gained and lost over time and transaction information. Report availability can depend on the channel and current Studio interface.
- Calculate a rate for each condition. Divide new sign-ups by eligible viewers or by measured exposure opportunities, using the same denominator definition in both conditions. Show the raw sign-up count and the denominator alongside the rate.
- Compare counts and rates. Report the absolute difference in sign-up counts and the difference in rates between promotion and control. Include dates, hours, uptime, and notable events so readers can see what periods the comparison represents.
- Describe uncertainty. Include an uncertainty estimate only if the data and analysis support it. There is no established universal minimum sample size, test duration, or expected lift for a 24/7 YouTube membership promotion; those depend on the channel’s baseline, audience, and schedule.
Raw totals alone can mislead: a period with more viewers or more uptime may naturally produce more sign-ups. A sign-up that happens during or after a promotion is not automatically an incremental conversion. Google distinguishes conversions attributed to an interaction from incremental conversions estimated by comparing treatment and control outcomes over the study period. Time-block tests have a spillover problem: someone may see the promotion in one block and join later, during a control block. Publicly documented YouTube guidance does not establish an attribution window that links a membership sign-up to a particular on-stream promotion exposure.

Before interpreting results, decide how you will handle repeat viewers and delayed actions. Options include using longer blocks with clear gaps, marking transition periods separately, or reporting the result as a block-level association rather than claiming precise viewer-level attribution. Apply the same rule throughout the test and disclose it with the results.
If randomization is not feasible
Compare pre- and post-promotion periods of similar length, ideally against a longer historical baseline matched by day of week and time of day. Keep the measures and denominators consistent. Record differences in audience mix, uptime, special events, message frequency, and other promotions.
Call the result directional evidence, not proof that the promotion caused the change. Google’s measurement guidance notes that a pre/post analysis does not control for confounders. Its measurement playbook explains the limitation.
Common measurement problems and fixes
