How to Manage Subtitles on Disney+ on Any Major Device

A device-by-device guide to Disney+ subtitles: toggle captions, change language, customize appearance, understand title and region limits, and troubleshoot common problems.

To manage subtitles on Disney+, start a movie or episode, reveal the playback controls, open Audio and Subtitles (often shown as a keyboard, speech-bubble, or three-dot icon), then choose a language, closed captions, or Off. The control is usually in the upper-right on phones and browsers and near the lower-right on TV apps. Roku uses the remote’s * button, while Apple TV uses a downward swipe on the remote.

The universal method

  1. Start the movie or episode.
  2. Pause or move the pointer over the video to show controls.
  3. Open Audio and Subtitles, the keyboard icon, speech-bubble icon, or (on some TVs) a three-dot menu.
  4. Under subtitles or captions, choose the language or track you want.
  5. Select Off to disable subtitles.
  6. Close the menu with the back arrow, X, or by tapping outside it.

Disney+ saves recent audio and subtitle choices for the profile and may reuse them on later titles when the same track is available. This is profile-based and title-dependent, not a guaranteed permanent default. Language options vary by program, country or region, app language, and licensing.

Disney describes the player and language workflow in its video-language help article.

Device-by-device instructions

Web browsers on Windows and Mac

  1. Open Disney+ in a supported browser and start playback.
  2. Move the pointer over the video.
  3. Select the Audio and Subtitles or keyboard icon in the upper-right.
  4. Choose a subtitle language or Off, then use the back arrow or click outside the menu.

For appearance controls, open that menu and select the gear icon, then adjust the available styling. Some browsers support subtitles but not custom styling. Disney recommends enabling JavaScript and cookies for computer streaming; extensions, privacy tools, or ad blockers can also interfere with controls. See Disney’s caption-format guidance and streaming troubleshooting.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the Disney+ app and start playback.
  2. Tap the video to reveal controls.
  3. Tap Audio and Subtitles or the keyboard icon.
  4. Select a language, captions, or Off.

To style captions system-wide, go to Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning > Style. If Disney+ ignores a custom font, size, color, or opacity, disable Video Override for those attributes. Exact results can differ by title and app release.

Android phones and tablets

  1. Start a title, tap the screen, and open Audio and Subtitles.
  2. Choose a subtitle or closed-caption track, or select Off.

On Google Android, styling is generally under Settings > Accessibility > Caption preferences > Caption size and style. On Samsung devices, use Settings > Accessibility > Hearing > Google subtitles (CC) or Samsung subtitles (CC). Names vary by manufacturer and Android version.

If only the app is malfunctioning, try Settings > Apps/Applications > Disney+ > Storage > Clear Cache. Use Clear Data only if needed: it can sign you out and remove local app information. Disney’s cache guidance is available here.

Smart TVs

  1. Start playback in Disney+.
  2. Open the player’s Audio and Subtitles menu, usually near the lower-right.
  3. Select a language or Off.

On supported TV app versions, choose Subtitle Styling in the same menu; changes are saved automatically. Also check the television’s Accessibility, Captions, or Subtitles settings, but do not assume a global TV switch always overrides Disney+. Menus differ across Samsung, LG, Vizio, Hisense, Android TV, Google TV, and other platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roku and Roku TV

  1. Play the Disney+ title.
  2. Press the Roku remote’s * button.
  3. Choose the subtitle or caption setting, then select a language or turn captions off.

Roku may use its own playback or accessibility panel rather than Disney+’s keyboard icon. If * shows only a general menu, resume playback and press it again, then relaunch Disney+, check Roku caption settings, update software, or reinstall the channel as later troubleshooting steps.

Apple TV

  1. Start playback.
  2. Swipe down on the Apple TV remote.
  3. Open the subtitle or Audio and Subtitles control and choose a language or Off.

For appearance, use Settings > General > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning > Style. If a custom style is ignored, disable Video Override for font, size, color, and opacity.

Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick

  1. Start the title and open Disney+’s Audio and Subtitles menu.
  2. Choose the track you want or select Off.

For device styling, go to Settings > Accessibility, turn on Closed Caption, and adjust text size and style. Disney says subtitles are not available on the first-generation Fire TV Stick. Supported Fire TV devices generally require Fire OS 6.0 or later, but that does not guarantee every caption feature on every legacy model. See Disney’s Fire TV requirements.

Chromecast and Google Cast

  1. Begin casting from a phone, tablet, or browser.
  2. Open Disney+’s Audio and Subtitles menu on the casting device.
  3. Choose a language or Off, then continue casting.

Chromecast subtitle styling follows the device used to cast. Change styles on Android, iPhone/iPad, or the browser player rather than looking for an independent receiver setting. If the cast output differs, stop casting, change the track locally, reconnect, and test another title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Xbox

  1. Start playback and open Disney+’s in-player language menu.
  2. Select a subtitle or caption language, or Off.

Device styling is generally under Settings > Ease of Access > Closed Captioning. Labels can differ across Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S software versions.

Subtitles, closed captions, and SDH

Subtitles usually translate spoken dialogue. Closed captions can add speaker identification and non-dialogue information such as music or sound effects. SDH means “subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing” and commonly includes those contextual cues. Disney+ groups these tracks under its subtitle options, but availability and labels differ by title.

A translated subtitle track, ordinary-language subtitle, and captions for a dubbed version may be separate text tracks. Therefore captions do not necessarily match dubbed speech word for word.

Change the Disney+ app language

  1. Open Disney+ and select the profile icon (on the web, hover over it if necessary).
  2. Select Edit Profiles.
  3. Choose the profile.
  4. Under App Language, select a language.
  5. Select Done.

Changing the app language can make another audio or subtitle version appear, but it cannot create a track that Disney+ has not licensed for your title and region. See Disney’s language-change instructions.

Troubleshoot common subtitle problems

The subtitle menu is missing

  • Reveal the controls by tapping, pausing, or moving the pointer over the video.
  • Look for a keyboard, speech-bubble, three-dot, or Audio and Subtitles icon.
  • On Roku press *; on Apple TV swipe down.
  • Restart the title and app, update Disney+ and the device, and test another title.

Your preferred language is absent

  1. Test another program to separate title availability from a device problem.
  2. Check the profile’s app language and your country or region.
  3. Try the title on another supported device.
  4. Update the app and device; contact Disney+ if multiple titles are affected.

Subtitles work on one title but not another

This usually points to title-level localization or licensing rather than a broken device. Compare several programs before clearing data or reinstalling.

Subtitles will not turn off

  1. Open the Disney+ player and select Off.
  2. Check the device’s global caption setting.
  3. Close and reopen Disney+, test another title, and install updates.
  4. Clear cache or reinstall only if the problem persists.

Captions are too small, faint, or badly positioned

Use the styling path for your platform above. Disney+ offers its own Subtitle Styling on some TVs and browsers; device controls are used on iOS, Android, Apple TV, Fire TV, Xbox, and PlayStation. Device changes may affect other apps too.

Captions are delayed, frozen, or disappear

  1. Pause and resume, then rewind or restart the episode.
  2. Test another title.
  3. Fully close Disney+ and restart the device.
  4. Check app and operating-system updates.
  5. Clear cache or reinstall the app.
  6. If playback itself is unstable, check the network and power-cycle the equipment.

Disney’s broader troubleshooting steps are documented at Streaming issues and Troubleshoot the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to contact Disney+

Contact support when captions are missing across multiple titles, the menu is absent on an updated supported device, or the same track is defective on more than one device after the steps above. Use Disney’s current contact options; phone numbers and availability can change by country.
