To keep a video repeating while FFmpeg sends it to YouTube Live, loop the file as an input, pace it in real time with -re, and send the output to YouTube’s ingest URL with your stream key. Those are separate from connection recovery: FFmpeg can attempt to reconnect after some temporary output failures, but neither a media loop nor recovery options guarantee viewers will see no interruption.
What you need to keep separate
A continuous YouTube broadcast has two distinct jobs: repeat the source media when it ends, and maintain or recover the connection carrying the encoded stream. A loop addresses the first. Output recovery addresses some of the second; it cannot guarantee uninterrupted playback if the encoder, network, or YouTube ingest fails.
- Media loop: make the video file repeat, and decide how its audio should repeat.
- Live pacing: read the file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as FFmpeg can process it.
- Delivery: encode to YouTube-compatible settings and use the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room.
- Recovery and monitoring: optionally use FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer recovery options, then test and watch YouTube’s stream health.
Choose how to loop the source
Loop the entire input file
For a file intended to repeat as a whole, FFmpeg’s input-level -stream_loop -1 option is often the simplest method. It requests infinite repetitions of the input. Place it before the corresponding -i; FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output. For example, the opening of a command can be ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "documentary.mp4" .... Check the installed build’s help or documentation, and test the file’s audio and video at the join before using it live.
Loop video frames with the loop filter
The loop video filter repeats buffered frames. Its loop=-1 setting means repeat indefinitely; size sets the number of frames buffered and start selects the first frame. This is a video-frame operation, not a complete audiovisual looping strategy. You must choose and configure audio separately, and account for whether the chosen frame range and audio duration stay synchronized. See the FFmpeg filters documentation.

Whole-input looping and frame-filter looping solve different source problems. Use whole-input looping when the file’s streams should repeat together; use a frame filter when you specifically need to repeat a selected run of video frames. In either case, verify the boundary with the actual file rather than assuming a seamless join.
Configure a YouTube-compatible live output
Use real-time pacing for a file
FFmpeg documents -re as reading at the input’s native frame rate, equivalent to -readrate 1. It is useful when a file is being sent as a live stream. Put it before the file’s -i. Do not apply low read rates to actual capture devices or live inputs: FFmpeg warns that this can cause packet loss. See the FFmpeg documentation.
Match the encoder settings to YouTube’s guidance
YouTube Help lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds; frame-rate guidance goes up to 60 fps. Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s published table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, and confirm your upload connection can sustain it. YouTube recommends RTMPS. These are platform recommendations, not a promise that every source or connection will work at every listed setting. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Copy the destination credentials from Live Control Room
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream and copy its server URL and stream key into FFmpeg’s output destination, following YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a public script. If you reset the key, update the FFmpeg configuration too.

The exact command depends on your FFmpeg build, input streams, audio plan, selected encoder and YouTube bitrate. This illustrative pattern shows the moving parts; replace the placeholders and add the appropriate video and audio encoding options for the settings you selected. Do not paste a real stream key into a public post or shared terminal transcript.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "documentary.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE -maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize BUFFER_SIZE
-g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL_IN_FRAMES -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a AUDIO_BITRATE -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUTUBE_SERVER_URL/YOUR_PRIVATE_STREAM_KEY"
This is a starting pattern, not a universally correct or tested command. Set the video bitrate and keyframe interval to values appropriate for your selected resolution and frame rate; a two-second GOP corresponds to twice the frame rate in frames. Confirm the input has the audio stream you intend to send. If it does not, provide a separate audio source or deliberately configure silent audio, and verify synchronization and duration across the loop boundary. Confirm encoder and option availability with ffmpeg -version and the installed build’s help/documentation. FFmpeg option placement matters: input options belong before their input, and output options before the output URL.

- Prepare a representative test: use the intended video, audio, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, including material near the file’s end and beginning.
- Start the YouTube event: configure the encoder destination with the current server URL and protected key from Live Control Room.
- Start FFmpeg and inspect its output: look for encoding or connection errors and confirm that packets are being sent.
- Check YouTube’s stream health: review the messages and status in Live Control Room while testing, rather than assuming a successful local process means a healthy viewer-facing stream.
- Observe the loop join: check picture, audio, and synchronization at the transition. Adjust the loop strategy or source if there is a pause, abrupt sound, or timing drift.
YouTube recommends testing before starting and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Its guidance does not establish that any one FFmpeg command is guaranteed to be interruption-free.
Attempt recovery from temporary output failures
Looping the source does not reconnect a failed output. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation includes an RTMP example using -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1 -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 to continue processing in real time and attempt recovery after temporary failures. The options are an example, not a guarantee of seamless delivery; dropped packets or reconnect delay may still be visible, and behavior depends on the installed build and failure conditions. Verify support and syntax in your version’s documentation before relying on it. See the FFmpeg-devel recovery example.
When comparing output choices, RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended protocol; RTMP may be relevant where compatibility dictates, but follow the endpoint provided for your event. Adding FIFO recovery introduces an attempt to handle temporary output failures, with the trade-off that recovery can involve delay or dropped packets. The cited documentation does not establish a universally best configuration or quantify how often recovery succeeds.

Troubleshoot common failures
The video ends instead of repeating
Check that the loop option is present and placed before the input it applies to. For whole-file repetition, verify -stream_loop -1 is before that file’s -i. If using the loop filter, confirm its frame count, start position, and filter placement; the filter only repeats video frames.
Audio stops, repeats incorrectly, or falls out of sync
Do not assume a video-frame loop also loops audio. Check whether the input has an audio stream, how the chosen method handles its end, and what happens at the video boundary. Test the full transition with representative audio; if needed, define a separate audio loop or source and configure the output streams intentionally.
YouTube reports an unhealthy or rejected stream
Compare the chosen codec, audio format, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate with YouTube’s encoder guidance for the selected resolution. Confirm the output uses the server URL and current key from Live Control Room, and check FFmpeg’s log and YouTube’s stream-health messages for the specific error.

The output disconnects and does not resume cleanly
Check whether the installed FFmpeg build supports the FIFO muxer options and whether they are configured for the intended output. Recovery is an attempt after temporary failures, not a way to prevent network or ingest outages. Also check the host’s upload connection and YouTube’s status messages.
The stream is too fast or the source behaves unlike a live feed
For a file input, ensure -re appears before its -i, so FFmpeg reads at the native rate. Do not use a low read rate on a live capture input, where FFmpeg warns it may cause packet loss.
