If a pre-recorded clip freezes or changes when you switch OBS scenes, first check whether it restarts, briefly disappears while reloading, or whether the whole OBS preview stutters. For a clip that restarts when you return to its scene, open its Media Source properties and test with Restart playback when source becomes active turned off. For a brief blank or frozen-looking return, check Close file when inactive: that setting unloads the file while hidden and can cause a short reload delay. These are different behaviors, so test the settings separately.
OBS documents these local-source and performance behaviors, but the available evidence does not establish YouTube as the cause of a scene-switch freeze. Check what the OBS preview is doing before attributing the problem to YouTube.
Identify what is freezing before changing settings
Switch between the affected scenes during a controlled test and observe both the clip and the rest of OBS. Note whether the clip starts from the beginning, pauses or disappears briefly, holds a frame, or whether other sources and the preview also become choppy. This symptom split is a practical troubleshooting aid, not a formal OBS diagnosis.
- The clip starts over: inspect its activation behavior in Media Source properties.
- The clip is briefly blank or appears to reload: inspect whether OBS closes the file while the source is inactive.
- Several sources or the entire preview stutter: investigate system and scene load rather than assuming the clip alone is responsible.

Stop the clip from restarting when you return to its scene
OBS describes Restart playback when source becomes active as restarting a media file when its source is in the current scene and visible. OBS’s Media Sources documentation lists the option as on by default. If returning to a scene makes the clip jump to its beginning, test with this option off.
- In OBS, select the scene containing the clip.
- In the Sources list, right-click the clip’s Media Source and choose Properties.
- Turn off Restart playback when source becomes active.
- Apply the change, then switch away from the scene and back during a controlled test. Check whether the clip resumes as expected instead of starting over.
OBS interface labels can vary by installed version; confirm the wording in your Media Source properties if it differs. The behavior is documented on the OBS Media Sources page, dated January 11, 2022; that page does not establish a version-specific fix for every current installation. (OBS: Media Sources)

Check whether OBS unloads the file while the source is hidden
Close file when inactive is separate from restart-on-activation. OBS says it unloads the media file when the source is hidden or absent from the current scene, freeing memory. The file may take a short time to reappear after the source becomes active again, which can look like a freeze or blank interval.
- Open the Media Source’s Properties as above.
- Check whether Close file when inactive is enabled.
- If a delayed return matches what you see, turn it off and test again. Keep it enabled only if freeing memory while the source is inactive matters more than an immediate return.
Change this option independently from restart-on-activation. Otherwise, a restart and a reload delay can be mistaken for the same problem. (OBS: Media Sources)

Choose the right OBS source for your media
For a local video file, start with OBS’s built-in Media Source. It supports common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and offers controls such as looping, hardware decoding when available, playback speed, and visibility behavior. A change of source type is an isolation test, not a guaranteed repair.
When VLC Video is worth testing
Consider OBS’s VLC Video source when you need playlist or extended-media support. It uses VLC libraries and requires VLC to be installed; if OBS is 64-bit, OBS documentation says you need 64-bit VLC. You can compare the result with Media Source using the same scene-switch test, but the documentation does not promise VLC will cure a freeze.

If multiple sources or the whole OBS preview stall—not just one clip—look at rendering and encoding load. OBS explains that composing scenes uses GPU resources and recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate and simplifying scenes when OBS cannot keep up. This is a broader troubleshooting branch; one affected media source alone does not prove a GPU bottleneck.

- Simplify the affected scene by temporarily hiding expensive sources and filters, then test again.
- If the broader stutter continues, reduce output resolution or frame rate and repeat the test. The right trade-off depends on your intended stream and the capacity of your system.
- Make one change at a time and note whether the preview improves, so you can identify which adjustment mattered.

Use a controlled troubleshooting sequence
- Record the symptom: note whether the file restarts, briefly blanks, holds a frame, or stutters along with other sources.
- Test restart behavior: turn off Restart playback when source becomes active if the clip starts over on return.
- Test unload behavior: inspect Close file when inactive if it takes a moment to reappear.
- Compare source types only when relevant: try VLC Video if playlist or extended-media support is needed, and make sure the required VLC build is installed.
- Reduce workload for broad stutter: simplify scenes and lower output resolution or frame rate one change at a time.
- Collect details if unresolved: record your OBS version, operating system, file format, whether the audio continues, whether the preview freezes, and the OBS log from the affected session.
These observations can help narrow the problem, but the available official guidance does not map them to a confirmed cause for this specific YouTube scenario.
