How to Make an FFmpeg YouTube Stream Start Automatically After a Raspberry Pi Reboot

Use systemd to start an existing FFmpeg YouTube stream after Raspberry Pi reboot, with network ordering, protected key storage, restart behavior, logs, and a YouTube Studio check.

To start an already-working FFmpeg YouTube stream automatically after a Raspberry Pi reboots, run it as a systemd service. Create a unit that launches your existing command, waits for the network target, reads the stream key from a protected file, and uses a deliberate restart policy. Then enable the service and verify the actual picture in YouTube Studio: an active local process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Before you automate the stream

This setup assumes your FFmpeg command already works when you run it manually and that the YouTube broadcast is configured separately. A systemd service can launch FFmpeg at boot and restart it when its process exits; it does not create a YouTube broadcast, correct a bad command, or confirm that the ingest connection is healthy.

  • Keep the working command and input details available. You will adapt them into the service rather than use a generic command that may not fit your source, codecs, or stream settings.
  • Use the absolute path to FFmpeg and a specific, non-root service account with permission to read the input and required files.
  • Decide how the Pi should behave if the input is unavailable at boot. A camera or other source may not be ready when the service first starts.
  • Do not put the stream key in a public script or a command you might save in shell history.

For a more complex arrangement involving OAuth, source setup, or ingest configuration, validate those pieces before enabling unattended startup. The YouTube-AutoEncoder project illustrates a configuration that is intentionally left disabled until checks are complete.

Create a protected stream-key file

Store the key in an environment file that only the service account and its designated group can read. For example, an administrator can create /etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env and set its ownership and permissions for the account and group used by the service. A root-owned file restricted to the service group is one pattern described in StreamNeo’s systemd guide; substitute your actual service user and group.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Put the key in a variable, for example YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY=your_actual_key. Do not paste a real key into a public configuration, repository, or support post. If the key is exposed, replace it through YouTube’s live-stream settings before relying on the automated service.

Write the systemd unit

Create a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service. This pattern includes network ordering and a restart delay. Replace the user, group, working directory, FFmpeg path, input, and arguments with values that match the command you already tested.

This is a template, not a universally valid FFmpeg command. Preserve your tested input, encoding, output, and YouTube ingest settings. Confirm the absolute FFmpeg path on your Pi; check that the chosen working directory exists and that the service account can access both the input and environment file. If you use a wrapper script, make sure it is executable and readable by the service account.

Wants=network-online.target and After=network-online.target request and order startup around systemd’s network-online target. They do not certify that DNS, routing, or the YouTube ingest path is working. If the stream depends on a camera or another source, network readiness also does not guarantee that source is ready.

FFmpeg’s documented reconnection options on its protocols documentation address HTTP protocol behavior. Do not treat them as a universal recovery switch for a YouTube RTMP stream.

Reload systemd and enable the service

  1. After saving the unit, tell systemd to reload its unit files: sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  2. Start the service now and enable it for future boots: sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service. Enabling establishes startup behavior; starting it now lets you inspect the first run without rebooting.
  3. Check the unit state: sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service. Review whether the process is running and note any reported exit status or recent error.
  4. Follow its log output: sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -f. Use Ctrl+C to stop following the journal; this does not stop the service.

The Raspberry Pi forum’s examples show the same general systemd workflow, including enabling a unit and diagnosing execution errors such as status 203/EXEC: Startup script fails with (code=exited, status=203/EXEC). StreamNeo’s Raspberry Pi guide also discusses the practical limits of running a continuous loop on the device: Raspberry Pi 24/7 YouTube Loop: What Works and What Melts.

Verify the stream after a reboot

  1. Reboot the Pi when you are ready to test unattended startup: sudo reboot.
  2. After it returns, check sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service and inspect sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -b for this boot’s messages.
  3. Open YouTube Studio and check the relevant live control room or preview for incoming video and audio. Confirm that the broadcast is actually receiving the expected picture.

A service can report an active FFmpeg process while YouTube shows no picture. Treat systemd status and the YouTube preview as separate checks: the first indicates local process state; the second helps establish whether the stream reached YouTube and is usable there.

Troubleshoot common startup failures

  • Unit reports 203/EXEC or FFmpeg never launches: check the ExecStart binary path, unit syntax, and any wrapper script’s path and executable permission. Read the service journal for the specific failure.
  • Permission denied or missing input: confirm the service user can read the input, working directory, and environment file. A command that works as your login account may fail under a different service account.
  • Key or command is invalid: verify the environment-file path and variable name, and ensure the command receives the intended key and ingest URL. A restart policy cannot repair a wrong key or malformed command.
  • Service starts before the source is ready: network ordering does not wait for camera readiness. Check the source’s startup behavior and the journal; adjust the service or source startup arrangement to suit that hardware.
  • Systemd says active, but YouTube has no picture: inspect FFmpeg’s output and the YouTube Studio preview separately. The fault may be the input, network path, key, ingest, or broadcast state rather than systemd.
  • Repeated restarts do not fix the failure: Restart=always responds when the process exits; it cannot fix a process that remains hung, persistent network trouble, missing input, or a YouTube-side broadcast problem. A Raspberry Pi camera case discussed in the forums persisted across Pi reboots and required attention to the camera-side stream condition: How to gently terminate ffmpeg when called from a service?.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a Raspberry Pi and home connection to stay on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. The process is: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
