How to Make a YouTube Music Live Stream Reconnect Automatically with FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an FFmpeg music stream, handle three different failures separately: loop the file with -stream_loop -1 so it does not end at EOF, use FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer recovery options to retry a failed publishing output, and use a process supervisor if FFmpeg itself exits. None guarantees that YouTube will preserve the same viewer session after a disconnect. Test the setup on an unlisted or private stream before relying on it.

Which kind of interruption are you trying to recover from?

“Reconnect” can mean different things. The right fix depends on which part stopped:

Failure What to configure What it does not guarantee
The music file reaches its end Loop the input with -stream_loop -1 and read it at real-time speed with -re. It does not recover a failed network connection.
The connection from FFmpeg to YouTube ingest temporarily fails Use the FIFO muxer’s output recovery options, including -attempt_recovery 1 and -recovery_wait_time 1. It does not guarantee recovery, seamless playback, or continuation of the same YouTube event.
The FFmpeg process terminates Configure an operating-system process supervisor to restart the command, and test that behavior separately. A new process starting does not guarantee YouTube will treat it as the same uninterrupted viewer session.

The HTTP protocol options named -reconnect are for HTTP inputs, not a general way to re-establish an RTMP publishing output. For output recovery, use the FIFO muxer documentation as the starting point. FFmpeg Protocols Documentation · FFmpeg Formats Documentation: FIFO muxer

Example: loop a local music file and retry the publishing output

This illustrative command combines a looping audio input, a generated black video background, and the documented FIFO recovery pattern:

  -stream_loop -1 -re -i music.mp3
  -f lavfi -i color=c=black:s=1280x720:r=30
  -shortest
  -map 1:v -map 0:a
  -c:v libx264 -tune stillimage -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f fifo -fifo_format flv
  -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
  "rtmps://<YouTube-ingest-url>/<stream-key>"

This is an illustrative starting point, not a tested command. Check the options against your installed FFmpeg build and verify the stream mapping and behavior with your exact file. The FIFO options apply to output muxing; -attempt_recovery 1 enables attempts after temporary failure, and -recovery_wait_time 1 sets the wait between attempts to one second. Recovery can still fail.

Review the command before using it

  • Replace the destination placeholder with the current server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password.
  • The sample creates a 1280×720, 30 fps black video stream and maps it with the music file’s audio. If your visual input differs, change the input and explicit -map options accordingly.
  • The sample uses H.264 video, AAC audio at 128 kbps, and -g 60. At 30 fps, that GOP setting corresponds to a two-second interval. Match resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codecs, and keyframe interval to your stream and YouTube’s current guidance rather than copying sample values blindly.
  • Check the behavior of -stream_loop and -shortest with your installed FFmpeg release and the actual inputs. Make sure generated video continues as intended and that the output does not end when the audio reaches a boundary.
  • If your stream has no video, provide an appropriate generated visual input and map it explicitly; YouTube’s encoder workflow expects a video feed for a standard music livestream.

For a publishing output, do not add -reconnect 1 as a supposed RTMP retry fix. FFmpeg documents that reconnect family under HTTP protocol options for input connections. FFmpeg Protocols Documentation

Set up YouTube ingest and encoding

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the stream and copy its current server URL and stream key into the FFmpeg destination. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that lets the encoder send its feed. Keep it private. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  2. Choose settings for the actual feed. YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1 video. Select settings your encoder and upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
  3. Check auto-start and auto-stop. These Live Control Room settings affect whether starting or stopping from the encoder starts or ends the YouTube stream. Reusing stream settings copies those selections, so verify the configuration for the stream you are testing. Manage live stream settings
  4. Test before broadcasting publicly. Use an unlisted or private test stream. Check the Control Room preview and stream health, audio/video quality, and the watch page; YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the broadcast. YouTube live streaming tips – Computer

What happens if FFmpeg exits?

FIFO recovery addresses temporary output failures while FFmpeg is running. If the process terminates, those options cannot restart it. Use an operating-system process supervisor to launch the command again, then test what viewers see and whether the configured YouTube stream accepts the restarted encoder. Do not assume a restarted process preserves event continuity; the cited FFmpeg and YouTube guidance does not guarantee that outcome.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. For a long-running broadcast, account for that boundary and check the current Live Control Room behavior rather than assuming one event can run indefinitely. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Troubleshoot common reconnect problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The music stops at the end of the file. The input is not looping, or the command’s input and output behavior is not as expected. Confirm -stream_loop -1 is applied to the audio input and test the complete command with the file. Check how -shortest interacts with all inputs in your FFmpeg build.
FFmpeg keeps running but the YouTube feed does not return. The output recovery attempt did not succeed, or the destination credentials or ingest connection are invalid. Inspect FFmpeg’s output and YouTube stream health. Confirm you are using the FIFO output options and the current server URL and stream key.
YouTube reports an encoder startup error. The stream key may be stale or incorrect. Copy the current key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream
The stream ends when FFmpeg is restarted. A process restart may create a new publishing attempt rather than continue the existing viewer session; auto-start/auto-stop configuration can also affect behavior. Test the actual stream settings and restart procedure, including auto-start and auto-stop, on a private or unlisted test.
The output starts but video or audio is missing or unstable. Input mapping, codec settings, or the available upload connection may not match the feed. Check explicit -map options, preview, stream health, and the current YouTube encoder recommendations; test at the intended settings before going public.
