FFmpeg is not the playlist downloader: yt-dlp can call FFmpeg for merging or post-processing when needed. If yt-dlp runs in Docker, map the VPS directory into the container and write to the container-side path. Keep yt-dlp’s download archive on the persistent volume so later runs can skip items already downloaded.
Only download content when YouTube and the applicable rights holders authorize it. Technical access to a playlist does not itself grant permission.
Before downloading: confirm authorization and the mounted path
YouTube’s Terms of Service restrict downloading or otherwise using content unless expressly authorized by YouTube or done with prior written permission from YouTube and, if applicable, the rights holders. They also restrict automated access, subject to the terms’ stated exceptions. Use this workflow only for content you are authorized to download and handle.
There is no universal VPS volume path. It depends on your provider and server configuration. Find the actual mount point in your VPS setup, then verify that it is mounted, has enough free capacity for the files you intend to save, and is writable by the account that will run yt-dlp. Do not assume a directory is a mounted volume just because its name looks like one: if the volume is detached, a download could fill the server’s ordinary filesystem instead.

For persistent mounts and boot-time configuration, consult your Linux distribution’s fstab manual and your VPS provider’s documentation for its specific attachment steps and paths. Volume capacity, persistence through rebuilds, performance, pricing, and backup options are provider-specific; check those details with the provider.
Download directly to the mounted volume
If yt-dlp runs directly on the VPS, use the host’s mounted path as the destination. This example creates a folder named after the playlist and saves each item with its playlist position and title:

The template organizes files into a playlist folder and prefixes filenames with their playlist index. yt-dlp’s hierarchical output templates create missing directories as needed; see its output-template documentation.
Before launching a large playlist, verify write access as the same user that will run the download. For example, a simple write check is:

touch /srv/media/.write-test && rm /srv/media/.write-testUse your actual mount path in place of /srv/media. If this fails, correct the mount or directory permissions rather than switching to a different, unmounted destination.
Make reruns incremental with a persistent archive
To rerun yt-dlp as a playlist grows without downloading successfully completed items again, store its download archive on the mounted volume:

yt-dlp --download-archive "/srv/media/archive.txt" -P "/srv/media" -o "%(playlist)s/%(playlist_index)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s" "PLAYLIST_URL"Keep using the same archive file on subsequent runs. yt-dlp records successfully downloaded items there and skips them on later runs, downloading items that are new to the archive. If the archive is instead stored on temporary or non-persistent storage, a recreated server or container may lose that record and the rerun may not be incremental. See yt-dlp’s filesystem options.
Use a mounted volume when yt-dlp runs in Docker
A path on the VPS host is not automatically visible inside a container. Bind-mount the host directory to a container destination, then give yt-dlp that container-side destination. For example:

The host directory is src; /downloads is its container-side destination. In this example, both media and the archive are written under that mapped destination.
Docker’s bind-mount documentation explains that bind mounts make host files available in a container and persist files created there on the host. With the --mount form, the source path must exist. Bind mounts are writable by default, but host permissions still apply to the user running in the container. Check the image’s user and the host directory’s ownership and permissions if writes fail.
Mounting a host directory over a non-empty directory in the container obscures the container directory’s existing contents. Do not rely on files that were already at the container destination before the mount. Also, if yt-dlp writes to a path other than the mapped destination, its files may remain in container storage rather than the VPS volume.

yt-dlp handles playlist extraction and downloading; FFmpeg is a separate media tool that yt-dlp may use for merging or post-processing. Install FFmpeg and make sure it is discoverable in the environment where yt-dlp runs. If yt-dlp is in Docker, FFmpeg must be available inside that container, not merely installed on the VPS host. The FFmpeg command documentation describes FFmpeg’s media-processing role. An FFmpeg concat or playlist input is not a substitute for a YouTube playlist downloader.
Troubleshoot missing files or failed writes
- Nothing appears on the host: Confirm the volume is mounted at the path you expect. Then check whether yt-dlp ran on the host or in a container; host execution needs the host path, while container execution needs the mapped destination.
- Files appear in the wrong place: Check the exact path passed to
-Pand, for Docker, confirm the bind mount’ssrcanddstpoint to the intended directories. A path inside the container that is not the mount destination can write to ephemeral container storage. - Permission denied: Check ownership and write permissions for the account running yt-dlp. In Docker, check the container process user as well as permissions on the host directory; the bind mount does not bypass host filesystem permissions.
- The archive does not prevent repeat downloads: Confirm every run uses the same archive file and that it resides on persistent storage. A changed or lost archive no longer records the items from previous runs.
- Container files seem to disappear: Verify that the output and archive paths are both under the bind-mounted destination. Remember that mounting over a non-empty container directory hides its original contents while the mount is in place.
- FFmpeg post-processing fails: Check that FFmpeg is installed and discoverable in the same environment as yt-dlp. A host installation does not make it available inside a container automatically.
- The volume fills or a download stops: Check available space on the mounted volume and the playlist’s actual media requirements. File sizes vary with playlist contents and selected formats, so estimate from the material you plan to download and the provider’s stated capacity rather than assuming a fixed amount.
