If an OBS playlist stops between videos, first find out whether only the media source has stopped or whether the YouTube stream itself has a problem. For a multi-file playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video Source, check its loop and visibility settings, and test the file at the transition. If OBS output also falters, check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before changing encoder or network settings. There is no single setting proven to fix every transition failure.
First determine whether the playlist or the live stream stopped
- Watch OBS when the next video should start. Check whether OBS still shows the intended scene and whether the preview or output is moving. If the scene remains live but the clip is frozen or gone, start with the source, playlist, and files.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room at the same time. Look at stream health and any timestamped status or error messages. If the outgoing stream is degraded or interrupted too, investigate encoder and connection health rather than treating it as only a playlist problem. YouTube describes stream metrics and health status in its Live Control Room metrics guidance and timestamped errors in its live streaming error messages.
This distinction prevents a common misdiagnosis: a local source can stop advancing while OBS continues sending a live scene, whereas a bad encoder or ingest connection can affect the whole stream.
Use the right OBS source for one file or a playlist

OBS documents the Media Source for individual files and VLC Video Source for playlists in its Media Sources guide. These controls do not guarantee a seamless boundary between every pair of files on every system.
Check VLC, playlist looping, and source visibility
1. Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS
If VLC Video Source is missing from the source list, verify VLC is installed. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Confirm the matching architecture before rebuilding the scene.

2. Check the playlist loop option
Open the VLC Video Source properties and confirm the playlist contains the intended items. Enable Loop Playlist if the list should start over after its final item. This setting controls cycling after the end of the list; it does not by itself explain a stop between two items.
3. Check whether the source is hidden at the transition
OBS documents VLC Video Source’s default visibility behavior as “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” If a scene change or source visibility toggle hides it, playback may stop and restart according to that behavior. Make sure the source is visible in the intended scene, and choose a visibility behavior that fits how you switch scenes. OBS explains source visibility and placement in its Sources Guide.

Isolate the file or playlist entry that precedes the stop
- Make a short test playlist and note which item is playing immediately before the failure.
- Test the suspected file on its own in OBS and in VLC.
- Replace or remove one suspect item at a time, then repeat the transition test.
This is a diagnostic method, not a documented universal cause or file-validation guarantee. The official OBS material describes the source controls but does not identify one supported-file check that resolves all transition faults.
If YouTube also reports a stream problem
- Check that the encoder is sending the expected picture and sound, and look for encoder errors.
- Check CPU load and whether the encoder or system is struggling at the time of the fault.
- Test outbound internet strength if encoder output appears healthy but YouTube reports stream problems.
- Use the timestamps and severity in Live Control Room status messages to match a stream-health issue to the moment playback stopped.
YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance advises checking encoder output, errors, CPU load, and outbound internet. If there are actual performance symptoms, OBS’s encoding performance guidance discusses reducing scene or source load; consider simplifying scenes or reducing output resolution or frame rate only when those symptoms support it. A more powerful computer is not established as a general fix for a playlist that stops between files.
