To broadcast a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live stream, play it through an encoder and send that feed to a stream you create in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube also lists a specialized hardware option, AJA HELO Plus with PlayToStream, for scheduling prerecorded media without a computer. A video file cannot simply be selected in YouTube’s ordinary webcam workflow.
Before you set up the stream
Check that your channel is eligible and ready before planning a broadcast. YouTube’s current live-stream guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, says streamers must be at least 16 and their channel must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of your planned start.
- Confirm your channel is verified and live streaming is available.
- Allow time for first-time activation, if applicable.
- Make sure you have the rights to every part of the video and audio you plan to broadcast.
Choose how to play the prerecorded video
Computer encoder software: the flexible route
YouTube supports software encoders generally. The computer plays or supplies the prerecorded video as the encoder’s video source, and the encoder sends the feed to YouTube. The exact way to add a media file, play it, schedule playback, or loop it depends on the particular encoder and its current version; YouTube’s general connection instructions do not establish one set of file-playback steps that applies to every program. Check the encoder’s own documentation for those controls.
This route suits creators who want a flexible software setup and can leave the computer and playback workflow running for the broadcast.

AJA HELO Plus: specialized computer-free scheduling
YouTube’s encoder directory identifies the AJA HELO Plus and its PlayToStream feature as a way to schedule prerecorded media and stream it directly to YouTube Live without a computer. It is a dedicated hardware option, not a requirement for the standard encoder workflow. Product price, stock, and package details are not established here, so check with the manufacturer or seller before buying.
Create and schedule the YouTube Live stream
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live. Create a stream or schedule one in Live Control Room.
- Set the listing. Choose a title and other stream details, then set visibility to public, private, or unlisted according to who should be able to watch. Scheduling can create an upcoming listing and let viewers opt into a reminder.
- Choose an encoder workflow. For the computer route, configure encoder software to play the prerecorded video as its source. For the documented standalone route, use the AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream feature.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream’s encoder settings, copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube and enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
- Set the video and audio in the encoder. Use settings supported by your source, encoder, connection, and YouTube’s current recommendations. Confirm the output resolution, frame rate, and audio are appropriate for the video. YouTube’s general encoder instructions do not prescribe one bitrate or keyframe setting for every encoder and source, so do not assume a universal value; consult the current guidance for your chosen encoder and verify its output in the Live Control Room preview.
Run a preflight and start the broadcast
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder stream at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use that lead time to catch connection or playback problems rather than waiting until viewers arrive.

- Start the encoder and confirm that it is sending the prerecorded video to the correct YouTube stream.
- Check the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm both picture and sound, and check that the intended audience can access the scheduled listing.
- Start the scheduled stream when ready, then monitor the audio and video while it runs.
- When the broadcast is finished, stop the encoder feed and end the stream in YouTube. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Clear rights and understand the policy risk
Prerecording does not change the rights required to broadcast the material. YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” The terms also require compliance with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and applicable laws.
Check permissions for music, footage, photographs, graphics, and other third-party material in both the live broadcast and its archive. YouTube identifies copyright strikes and matches to another copyrighted live broadcast as reasons a live stream may be restricted. A rights issue can therefore affect the broadcast even if the video file played successfully in a private test.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
You cannot start a live stream
Check channel verification, age eligibility, and whether a live-stream restriction occurred in the preceding 90 days. If this is the channel’s first time streaming, activation may take up to 24 hours; enable the feature early rather than troubleshooting at the event start.
YouTube receives no video or audio
Confirm that the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the intended Live Control Room stream, and that it is sending the media source rather than an empty scene or disconnected input. Inspect the incoming preview and the encoder’s current source and audio routing.

The scheduled event starts but the prerecorded video does not play as expected
Check the selected encoder’s documentation for file-source playback, start behavior, and any scheduling or looping controls. These functions vary by software and version; YouTube’s general encoder connection steps do not guarantee that every encoder can schedule or loop a file unattended.
The stream works in preview but viewers cannot watch
Verify the stream’s visibility setting and confirm the listing is available to the intended audience. YouTube recommends checking audience access during preflight, before the scheduled start.

The stream is interrupted or restricted
Check the encoder’s connection and the Live Control Room status. Separately review the video’s music and other third-party rights, along with YouTube policy compliance; a successful encoder connection does not establish permission to broadcast the content.
