Keep sermon audio consistent by building a clean feed from the church mixer to OBS, setting gain from the microphone outward, balancing speech against music, and testing the whole service before going live. Use compression to manage ordinary level variation and a limiter to catch brief peaks—not to repair a bad mix. During a nonstop broadcast, monitor the actual output and keep a local recording.
Why the room can sound fine while the livestream does not
The congregation hears sound through the room’s speakers; online viewers hear the feed sent to the streaming computer. Those mixes can differ substantially. A microphone that sounds loud in the sanctuary may be too quiet in the stream mix, while music or transitions may be disproportionately strong online.
Where the church console supports it, send a dedicated mix or matrix output to the streaming computer rather than relying on a room microphone to capture the sanctuary. The right routing depends on the mixer and software in use; it is a production choice, not a YouTube requirement. Check that the signal is clean at the console, interface, and OBS before raising downstream faders. OBS’s audio meter documentation describes its input indicator as a way to spot an audio-interface signal that is too loud.
Set levels from the microphone to OBS
- Use the preacher’s real speaking range. Ask the preacher to speak at normal volume and then at the strongest level expected during the service. Set microphone placement and preamp or console input gain so both are clear and clean.
- Check each stage downstream. Watch and listen at the mixer output, interface input, any operating-system audio path, and the OBS source. Lowering the OBS fader cannot undo distortion that has already been clipped upstream. OBS recommends beginning at the device and monitoring the signal again when it reaches OBS in its audio mixer guide.
- Leave headroom for emphatic moments. In digital audio, 0 dBFS is the maximum representable level; going above it in the final stream can clip and distort. OBS documents -20 dBFS as its meter alignment level, described as near average speech, and -9 dBFS as its permitted maximum meter level to allow headroom for peak behavior. Those are OBS meter conventions, not required sermon averages or peak targets. See OBS’s meter details.
- Save a repeatable starting point. Record fader positions, device selections, and any processing settings. If microphones or operators change between service segments, check each one rather than assuming one setting fits all.
Balance preaching, worship music, and transitions
Make speech easy to understand at an ordinary listening volume, then set music and transitions so they support rather than overtake it. Listen to the stream feed itself: similar meter readings do not guarantee that speech and music seem equally loud. OBS cautions that different sources can be perceived differently even when their meters look similar; account for speech versus computer-generated or other audio in the mix (OBS Audio Mixer Guide).

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check every microphone used during the service, including any backup or handheld mic.
- Listen to music starts, fades, walk-on audio, and transitions for sudden jumps.
- Keep the microphone close enough and the stream mix strong enough that a compressor does not have to rescue a distant, weak voice.
- Write down reliable fader positions so volunteers can restore the mix consistently.
Use a compressor for variation and a limiter for peaks
A compressor can reduce routine differences between soft and loud speech. Use it gently: aggressive compression can flatten natural emphasis, make room noise more noticeable, or cause the level to pump. A limiter has a narrower job—catching brief peaks that might otherwise overload the output.
In OBS, put the limiter last in the relevant filter chain. OBS describes it as a compressor with a fast attack and high ratio and says it should be the last filter (Limiter Filter). OBS lists -6 dB as the limiter’s default threshold. Treat that as a software default to evaluate with your actual signal, not a universal output ceiling or loudness target.

What OBS meters and YouTube loudness do—and do not—tell you
OBS’s main meter line indicates peak program level; its separate moving indicator has a more loudness-like response. OBS notes limitations in using its meter as a loudness meter, so use the display to avoid overload and listen critically rather than treating a peak reading as a complete judgment of perceived loudness (OBS meter details; OBS Audio Mixer Guide).
There is no established YouTube live-sermon LUFS target in the cited guidance. Do not present “-14 LUFS” or another single number as a YouTube live requirement. EBU R 128 Supplement 2, version 3 (21 November 2023), addresses loudness leveling for streaming and notes that streaming services typically use targets higher than broadcast loudness standards. AES TD1008 gives recommendations for internet streaming and on-demand distribution, including separate treatment of integrated loudness and true peaks. These standards provide context for production choices, not proof of a fixed YouTube live target: EBU R 128 S2 and AES TD1008.

YouTube also documents viewer options such as Stable volume and Voice boost, which may affect playback for some viewers. They are not a dependable substitute for a well-mixed source (YouTube video and audio quality enhancements).
Test the complete service before going live
- Run an unlisted or otherwise suitable test using the actual microphones, music, room, operators, encoder, and internet path.
- Include quiet speech, the preacher’s strongest delivery, music, and transitions. YouTube recommends testing audio and movement similar to the real stream in its encoder settings guidance.
- Listen on headphones at the source and through OBS monitoring. Record the test, then listen back on headphones, a phone speaker, and a television or other typical playback device if available.
- Adjust the source or mix where needed, then repeat the test. OBS recommends recording a normal session and listening back before going live (Audio Mixer Guide).
Monitor the nonstop stream and protect the archive
Assign someone to monitor the outgoing sound and YouTube stream health during transmission. Keep a local recording, and check that the file is growing and remains usable. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend continuous audio/video monitoring and checking the local archive’s integrity.

Plan separately for a broadcast that runs longer than 12 hours. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need an on-demand archive, split the broadcast into suitable sessions or use a verified local recording and editing workflow; do not assume a single continuous YouTube stream will be preserved in full (YouTube: Archive live streams).

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Pastor is too quiet online, but the room sounds fine | The room mix and stream mix differ, or the stream microphone is too far away or low in the dedicated feed. | Check the console’s stream output and microphone placement; follow the signal from the source through the interface to OBS. |
| Voice distorts even after lowering the OBS fader | Clipping occurred earlier in the chain. | Reduce gain at the microphone preamp, console, or interface stage where overload starts; then verify each downstream stage. |
| Music or transitions suddenly overpower speech | Sources were balanced by meter alone or different segments use inconsistent fader positions. | Listen to each source in the stream mix, reset levels by ear, and document the positions for volunteers. |
| Compression makes the mix pump or raises room noise | Compression is too aggressive or the original voice signal is too weak. | Back off compression and correct microphone position or source gain before relying on dynamics processing. |
| Peaks still overload the output | The limiter is not last, or overload is occurring before it. | Place the OBS limiter last in its filter chain and correct upstream gain; the limiter cannot repair earlier clipping. |
| The live broadcast continued, but the full archive is missing | The stream exceeded 12 hours and YouTube may not capture streams that long. | Use appropriate session breaks or verify a local recording and editing workflow. |
