Windows settings can reduce the chance of an update restarting your streaming PC at the wrong time, but they cannot guarantee a locally encoded YouTube stream will stay online through a restart. Set active hours around your broadcast, install pending updates before going live when practical, and schedule any required restart outside the stream. If the feed must continue while the PC is unavailable, test an independent backup encoder—or move prerecorded, looped content to a cloud-hosted YouTube workflow.
What Windows settings can—and cannot—do
Active hours help Windows avoid inconvenient restarts while you are normally using the computer; they are not an absolute lock against every restart. A restart that interrupts the PC running OBS or another local encoder also interrupts that encoder’s feed unless a separate path takes over. Microsoft says updates cannot be stopped entirely: they will eventually need to be downloaded and installed. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains the distinction between pausing updates and stopping them.
Prepare Windows before the broadcast
Review pending updates and restart ahead of time
- Open Windows Update and check whether updates are pending.
- When practical, install updates and restart before the planned broadcast.
- After restarting, verify that your encoder, scheduled stream, audio, and video work as expected. Updates that require a restart still need one; advance installation lets you choose a more convenient time rather than avoiding it.
Set active hours to cover the stream
Choose hours that match when the streaming PC is actually in use. Microsoft describes active hours as a way to help prevent inconvenient restarts, not as a guarantee that Windows will never restart.
- Windows 11: Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours. Choose automatic adjustment or set the hours manually.
- Windows 10: Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Change active hours.
Use Pause updates only as a temporary buffer
Windows 11 offers a date-based Pause updates control. Microsoft’s current guidance allows pausing for up to 35 days; updates resume after the pause expires. Use it only when a planned event needs a short buffer, then return to updating and schedule any required restart. Pausing is not a permanent way to turn updates off. See Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ.

Account for Windows version and support
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If the streaming PC still runs Windows 10, check its support and security situation and plan an upgrade or another supported arrangement; do not assume it continues receiving ongoing free Windows Update security fixes. Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support announcement gives the date.
Microsoft also documents a “one restart a month” behavior for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, beginning with updates released on and after July 28, 2026. The rollout is gradual, some critical or expedited updates can still install promptly, and updates are not held indefinitely. Do not plan on a streaming PC restarting only once a month: check whether the device has received this behavior and continue to plan around restarts. Microsoft’s Windows deployment update guidance describes the rollout.

Start and monitor the YouTube stream
Build in setup time and check the viewer-facing result
- Set up the encoder at least two hours before the stream, as YouTube recommends.
- Start the stream at least 15 minutes before its scheduled event.
- Check the Live Control Room preview, then confirm the stream appears on the watch page.
- Monitor video, audio, stream health, and real-time analytics in Live Control Room. After any recovery or encoder switch, verify playback from the viewer-facing page as well.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers encoder preparation and backup encoders; its live-streaming troubleshooting guidance explains stream status and health indicators.
Protect your stream key and recovery access
An encoder sends its feed to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key. Keep the key secure, and make sure the person responsible for recovery can access both the configured encoder and Live Control Room. YouTube documents how to reset a stream key if necessary in its encoder guidance.

Decide whether a backup encoder is enough
A second software or hardware encoder can provide another feed path, but its presence alone does not prove that YouTube playback will continue through a Windows restart. YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then checking that the player rolls over to the backup. Test the actual Windows Update restart scenario too: a cable-loss test does not show that a backup starts correctly after Windows restarts.
- Check whether the backup has independent power and an independent source capture path.
- Confirm that the encoder configuration and YouTube failover behavior work for your stream.
- Verify that the backup has enough upload capacity and does not depend on the same limited upstream connection in a way that defeats redundancy.
- Watch the YouTube player during a planned test and confirm the viewer-facing feed continues as intended.
YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. Hardware is an optional architecture choice, not a fix for Windows Update or a guarantee of uptime. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes backup-encoder testing.

Leave enough upload bandwidth for both encoders
YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond total stream bitrate. For a primary and backup encoder, its capacity guidance is primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20%. If both encoders compete for an already limited upload connection, the second path may not provide useful redundancy. Check the actual available upload bandwidth and the combined bitrate before relying on failover. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance covers bitrate and stream settings.

A 24/7 live feed, its archive, and its rewind window are separate things. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; its encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one continuous 24/7 event will provide unlimited rewind or a complete automatic archive. Plan recording and archive needs separately. YouTube’s live-streaming DVR guidance explains the limitation.

Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded documentaries, playlists, or other looped material, a cloud-hosted workflow removes the home Windows PC and its update restarts from the streaming path. StreamNeo is #1 among the ways described here for that use: it keeps uploaded videos running from the cloud at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos, not a camera-based live production. Learn about StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stop Windows from updating during a 24/7 stream?
No. Windows updates can be paused temporarily, but Microsoft says they cannot be stopped entirely; updates will eventually need to be installed.
Will active hours prevent every restart?
No. Active hours help avoid inconvenient restarts, but do not guarantee that a local encoder will remain online through every restart.
Recommended Free Tools
Does a backup encoder guarantee that viewers will not see an interruption?
No. Test the YouTube failover behavior and the actual Windows-restart scenario; a successful cable-disconnect test alone does not prove restart recovery.
