That makes systemd relaunch FFmpeg after an abnormal exit, but it does not fix a bad stream key, rejected ingest, persistent network outage, or incompatible encoder settings. For stronger recovery, match the mechanism to the failure: protocol reconnect options for supported inputs, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer for some output interruptions, and systemd for a process that has exited.
What systemd can—and cannot—keep alive
systemd supervises the FFmpeg process. With Restart=on-failure, an abnormal exit can trigger another start after the configured delay. The systemd service manual recommends this policy for long-running services. Restart attempts are still subject to systemd start-rate limiting, so a rapidly failing unit can be held in a failed state. systemd.service(5)
This is process recovery, not an uninterrupted-stream guarantee. If FFmpeg stays alive while the output connection fails, systemd may have nothing to restart. If the stream key or encoding configuration is wrong, relaunching FFmpeg simply repeats the error.
Choose a recovery layer for the failure

No retry method guarantees uninterrupted playback for viewers or recovery from invalid credentials and persistent upstream errors. The useful question is which layer failed and whether retrying can address it.

Create a systemd unit for FFmpeg
The following is a schematic starting point, not a tested drop-in unit. Replace the executable path, input, encoding arguments, destination, and protected credential handling for your system.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetThe example’s RestartSec=5 is illustrative, not a universal best delay. Choose a delay that gives the network or ingest time to recover without creating an unnecessarily fast retry loop. Confirm your installed systemd version’s unit syntax and your FFmpeg build’s supported options before relying on the configuration.

Protect the stream key
Do not put a real stream key in a broadly readable unit file or expose it in published logs. Use a suitably protected environment or configuration mechanism, with permissions restricted to the account that needs it. Treat the key like a password; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live control room.
Enable and inspect the service
- Save the unit under a name such as
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service, adjusting the path and permissions for your installation. - Run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadso systemd reads the unit. - Run
sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.serviceto enable it at boot and start it now. - Check
systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.servicefor the current state andjournalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.servicefor service output.
When FFmpeg exits with a failure, systemd waits for RestartSec and then tries to start it again. If failures recur quickly, start-rate limiting can stop further starts and leave the unit failed. Understand StartLimitIntervalSec= and StartLimitBurst= for the systemd version in use before changing limits; do not make unlimited rapid retries the default response.

Use FFmpeg reconnect options only for supported inputs
FFmpeg’s protocol options distinguish among disconnection, network connection errors, streamed input, retry limits, and EOF conditions. Options such as reconnect, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_streamed, and reconnect_at_eof have different purposes. In particular, EOF reconnection can matter for live or endless inputs. Apply options only where the relevant protocol supports them, and check their placement and behavior in the installed build’s documentation. FFmpeg protocol documentation
These are input-side behaviors. Do not assume that adding an input reconnect flag will reconnect FFmpeg’s outgoing YouTube publisher connection.

Consider FIFO recovery for output interruptions
If FFmpeg remains alive but output delivery is interrupted, the FIFO muxer can attempt output recovery with options including attempt_recovery and recovery_wait_time. The documented example uses -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, and recovery parameters for a generic RTMP destination. That is an output-side technique distinct from systemd restarting the whole process, and the cited example is not YouTube-specific validation. Check the current FFmpeg documentation and the installed build for exact syntax and availability before adapting it. FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation
Keep the YouTube encoder settings valid
YouTube recommends RTMPS for Live ingest. Its current guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Bitrate recommendations depend on resolution and frame rate, so choose from YouTube’s current table for the actual stream rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube’s instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Confirm that video reaches YouTube and that audio, picture, and stream status look right before a scheduled broadcast. YouTube Help
Troubleshoot a stream that keeps stopping
- FFmpeg exited and systemd starts it again: inspect
journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.serviceand FFmpeg’s error output. Identify the original failure instead of only changing the restart delay. - The unit repeatedly restarts, but YouTube remains offline: check the current YouTube stream dashboard, stream key, ingest URL, and encoder settings. A restart loop can reproduce a persistent error without fixing it.
- The input disappears: confirm the input protocol supports the reconnect options you selected; behavior for one protocol does not establish behavior for another.
- FFmpeg remains alive but output is interrupted: investigate the output connection and whether FIFO muxer recovery is appropriate for the destination and build.
- The unit stops attempting starts: inspect its status and logs for start-rate limiting. Adjust the underlying failure and retry interval before considering version-appropriate start-limit settings.
- The stream reaches YouTube but is rejected or unstable: validate RTMPS, CBR, supported codecs, and the resolution/frame-rate-specific bitrate and keyframe requirements in YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
