A UPS can keep your FFmpeg computer and the network equipment it needs powered during a mains outage—but only for the load and runtime the UPS supports. It cannot keep a stream online if your internet connection fails. Plan for both: power continuity and internet continuity.
Map every link in the stream
The stream depends on a chain: power source → FFmpeg computer → router and modem/ONT → ISP network → YouTube ingest. A failure at any point can stop YouTube receiving video. Put every local device required for the connection—not only the computer—on backup power.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server or ingestion URL and a stream key. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Choose backup power for your actual load and runtime
List the devices that must stay on
Include the FFmpeg host and the network equipment between it and your ISP: for example, the router and the modem or optical network terminal (ONT), if they are separate. If any required device loses power, the UPS protecting the computer alone will not preserve the connection.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Match capacity to the job
Check each device’s power draw and the UPS manufacturer’s supported load and runtime at that load. Decide how long you need to ride through an outage, then select a UPS that can support the combined equipment for that duration. Runtime varies with the attached load and UPS; there is no universal VA rating or battery figure that guarantees a particular stream duration.
Also consider what happens when the battery is depleted. A UPS delays loss of local power; it does not provide unlimited backup. If the host shuts down, the FFmpeg process stops with it.

Keep internet continuity separate from power
A UPS can power your local router and modem, but it does not power your ISP’s neighborhood equipment, fiber or cable infrastructure, or upstream network. Your home equipment may stay on while the ISP path is down.
If the connection itself must survive an outage, investigate a genuinely independent connectivity path and test switching to it. Two connections that depend on the same local router, access network, or upstream route may share the same failure. Do not assume that backup power for two local devices creates internet redundancy.

Set up and verify the YouTube–FFmpeg connection
- Configure the encoder destination. Use the ingestion URL and stream key shown for your YouTube stream. Do not publish or share the key.
- Use YouTube-compatible settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Select the codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for your intended stream using YouTube’s current live encoder settings. Its bitrate guidance varies by codec and video settings.
- Check your upload connection. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Choose a bitrate your available upload connection can sustain; an advertised connection speed is not proof that the stream path will remain stable.
- Test under representative conditions. Run the stream with the kind of motion and audio you expect to broadcast. Watch stream health in YouTube Live Control Room and check for dropped frames or connection warnings before relying on the setup.
YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and checking both the encoder and internet connection. Its stream troubleshooting guidance points to encoder operation, CPU load, and outbound internet strength as useful checks. A healthy-looking encoder does not rule out an outbound connection problem.
Understand what backup ingest does—and does not do
YouTube’s Live API documents separate primary and backup ingestion addresses. A setup can transmit to the backup address simultaneously, which may provide ingest-endpoint redundancy if the encoder is configured to send to both. It does not supply backup electrical power or an independent internet connection, and it should not be treated as a guarantee that an interrupted session will resume automatically. See the YouTube Live API ingestion documentation.

Plan for recovery if power runs out
If the host loses power, streaming resumes only after the computer has power again and the FFmpeg process is running again. Configure a suitable restart policy or external supervisor if your operating system and setup support it, then test the behavior. The exact steps depend on the host and how FFmpeg is launched; protocol support alone does not establish that a generic FFmpeg process will reconnect or restart after a shutdown.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after encoder transmission stops. That is archive guidance, not a promise of seamless resumption or an archive guarantee for every stream duration. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Run a controlled outage drill
- Confirm the UPS load and battery are appropriate for the equipment connected. Do not unplug or handle electrical equipment in a way that is unsafe.
- With the setup supervised, safely remove mains input to the UPS and confirm the FFmpeg computer, router, and modem or ONT remain powered.
- Check that YouTube continues receiving the stream and inspect Live Control Room health messages.
- Restore mains power and observe whether the UPS returns to charging normally and the stream remains stable.
- If you need to understand behavior beyond the UPS runtime, test the shutdown and recovery procedure separately and under supervision. Verify that the host boots and that your configured process-restart method actually relaunches FFmpeg.
Troubleshooting: identify which link failed
| Symptom | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| The stream stops as soon as mains power fails | Whether the computer and every required network device are connected to the UPS, and whether the combined load is within its supported capacity. | Move required devices to backed-up outlets and reassess load and runtime. A UPS connected only to the PC cannot keep an unpowered router or modem online. |
| The computer stays on, but YouTube stops receiving video | Router and modem/ONT power, ISP availability, and YouTube stream health. | Check each point in the path. Local backup power does not ensure the ISP network is operating. |
| The encoder reports dropped frames or unstable health | Outbound connection strength, upload capacity at the chosen bitrate, CPU load, and whether the encoder is operating correctly. | Use YouTube’s troubleshooting steps; test upload capacity and reduce the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. |
| RTMPS connection or SSL error | Whether the server name uses the “rtmps” scheme and whether port 443 is available when the error is SSL-related. | Verify the destination and network/firewall configuration against Google’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance. |
| The host rebooted, but the stream did not return | Whether FFmpeg starts after boot, whether the stream key and destination are configured correctly, and whether the host has internet access. | Fix the setup-specific service or supervisor configuration and test a full restart. Do not assume the FFmpeg protocol reconnects after the host loses power. |
