If a YouTube loop stream plays videos in the wrong order, check the concat script FFmpeg actually opens: the concat demuxer processes its file entries sequentially. A YouTube stream key, bitrate, or keyframe setting will not reorder that list. Check the list first, then investigate looping, paths, and media timing if the symptom persists.
1. Check the playlist FFmpeg reads
- Find the exact concat script used by the running command. If a script is generated automatically, inspect the generated file—not just the source folder or generator settings. A sort rule in the generator may have placed files alphabetically, by date, or in another unintended order.
- Read every
fileentry from top to bottom. Confirm the paths point to the intended videos and that no entry is duplicated, missing, or out of position. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads the listed files one after another. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation. - Compare the script with the command’s input. Make sure the command is opening the script you inspected; a similarly named file in another directory can lead to a misleading fix.
For example, this list specifies that main.mp4 follows opening.mp4, and closing.mp4 follows main.mp4:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'opening.mp4'
file 'main.mp4'
file 'closing.mp4'This illustrates the input-list structure; it is not a tested command or a guarantee that arbitrary files can be concatenated with stream copying.
2. Check script syntax and file paths
- Use one directive per line. For automatic format recognition,
ffconcat version 1.0must be exactly the first line, without a byte-order mark or other leading characters. - Check spelling, capitalization where relevant, file extensions, and directory names in every path.
- For relative paths, verify that they resolve from the process’s working directory. A script can look correct while FFmpeg is started from a different directory than expected.

3. Distinguish sequence order from looping
A correctly ordered list can still appear to behave unexpectedly if the loop option is not applied as intended or the stream has not reached the end of the entries. The concat demuxer’s loop option is disabled by default. Check the installed FFmpeg version, the exact command, and the placement of input options; the right command depends on the invocation and files in use. Consult the concat demuxer options and FFmpeg’s FAQ on joining video files.
Do not treat a looping problem as an ordering problem. First establish that the list is correct and that playback has reached the end of its entries; then verify the loop configuration.

4. Check timing and compatibility if transitions look wrong
The concat demuxer expects the files to have matching streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. It uses each file’s duration to position the next file’s timestamps. Incorrect duration metadata can cause timing artifacts at transitions even when the entry order is correct; the script’s duration directive can override a stored duration. If entries are in the right order but a video cuts off, freezes, or shows a timing jump at a boundary, check the source files’ stream compatibility and duration metadata before changing playlist order.

5. Choose the right FFmpeg concatenation method
Changing concatenation methods is not, by itself, proof that ordering is fixed. Choose according to whether the inputs are compatible and whether re-encoding is acceptable:

6. Keep YouTube ingest checks separate
YouTube receives the encoded stream; its ingest settings do not determine the order in which FFmpeg reads a local concat list. If the playlist order is correct but the stream fails to connect or has poor stream health, check delivery separately:
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room into the encoder.
- Use a supported protocol and codec, and match resolution and frame rate to your intended output. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 in its encoder settings.
- YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its current encoder-settings page lists bitrate ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate; choose the applicable value there rather than using a number without knowing your target quality.
- Test with representative audio and motion, then monitor stream health. For encrypted ingest, YouTube recommends RTMPS and documents it in its RTMPS setup guidance.
These settings affect delivery and stream health, not the order of files in FFmpeg’s concat script. YouTube’s stream setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after ending; this matters for long-running stream planning, not sequence order.

7. Troubleshoot by symptom
