To make OBS start streaming after Windows restarts, configure OBS to launch at sign-in or through Task Scheduler, then add the --startstreaming launch parameter. Separately enable OBS automatic reconnect and check YouTube’s stream settings. These steps can restore a broadcast, but they do not guarantee it will resume unattended: the PC may start OBS before the network is ready, and a scheduled YouTube stream may still need you to click Go live.
Before you automate OBS
First confirm that the stream works when started manually. In YouTube Live Control Room, select the intended stream and check its stream key. In OBS, confirm the service, key, profile, scenes and output settings. A stream key is the credential OBS uses to send the feed to YouTube; keep it private. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance and the OBS Studio overview.
If this is the first time the YouTube account has enabled live streaming, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Make sure the account and stream are ready before relying on a restart test; see YouTube’s encoder guide.
Choose how Windows starts OBS
| Method | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Startup-folder shortcut | Starting OBS when the same Windows user signs in | Simple to set up, but tied to sign-in and offers less timing control. |
| Task Scheduler | More control over the trigger and launch settings | Requires correct executable and working-directory settings; it does not by itself prove the stream will reach YouTube. |
Both methods start OBS in a Windows user context. Do not assume either one will start OBS before sign-in or publish every kind of scheduled YouTube event without further action.

Method 1: Start OBS from the Windows Startup folder
- Find the OBS executable, usually named
obs64.exe, in the OBS installation folder. If you are unsure of its location, open the OBS shortcut’s properties and check its target. - Open the Startup folder for your Windows user. Press
Win + R, entershell:startup, and press Enter. - Create a shortcut in that folder pointing to
obs64.exe. Open the shortcut’s properties and append--startstreamingto the end of the Target field, after the executable path. Preserve the quotation marks around a path containing spaces; put a space before the parameter. - Sign in to Windows to verify that OBS opens and attempts to start streaming. Confirm the result in YouTube Live Control Room and on the channel’s watch page, not just in the OBS window.
OBS documents --startstreaming among its launch parameters. If OBS opens but does not begin streaming, recheck the shortcut target and confirm OBS’s normal streaming configuration works when you start it manually.
Method 2: Use Task Scheduler
- Open Windows Task Scheduler and choose Create Task (or the equivalent task-creation option available in your Windows version).
- On the General tab, give the task a recognizable name. Choose a run option appropriate for your setup; running only when the user is logged on keeps it in that user’s sign-in context.
- On Triggers, create the trigger that matches your goal, such as At log on for the relevant user.
- On Actions, choose Start a program. Set the program to the full path to
obs64.exe. Put--startstreamingin Add arguments. - Set Start in to the folder containing
obs64.exe—not the executable filename. OBS explicitly calls this out for scheduled-task and other automated launches in its launch-parameter instructions. - Save the task, run it once from Task Scheduler, and verify both that OBS launches and that YouTube receives the stream.
Task Scheduler labels can vary slightly by Windows version. The important details are the trigger, the executable path, the launch argument, and the working directory.

Configure stream reconnection separately
Starting OBS and restoring a dropped stream are different recovery steps. In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and find the Network section’s automatic reconnect controls. Enable automatic reconnection and choose a retry delay and retry count appropriate to your connection and broadcast. The exact controls can vary by OBS version; consult the OBS overview if the layout differs.
Automatic reconnect helps when OBS remains open but loses its connection. It does not reopen OBS after a Windows restart; the startup shortcut or scheduled task handles that. Conversely, --startstreaming does not make a dropped connection recover by itself.

Check whether YouTube will publish the feed automatically
YouTube’s stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop controls. Their behavior depends on the stream configuration, so confirm the controls for the specific stream in Live Control Room rather than assuming OBS’s start command will publish it. For scheduled streams, YouTube’s encoder instructions say to wait for the preview and click Go live. An OBS feed reaching YouTube is not the same as the scheduled event being publicly live.
Test the full restart path
- Start with an ordinary manual test: verify that OBS connects, the preview appears in YouTube Live Control Room, and the stream is accessible to viewers.
- After configuring startup, restart Windows and sign in if your chosen method runs at sign-in. Check whether OBS opens, whether it connects, and whether YouTube shows the expected live state.
- When practical, test the interruption you actually need to recover from, such as a restart after a short network outage. Do not infer success from OBS opening alone.
- Monitor stream health and check the viewer-facing page. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing and checking the preview and stream health.
- Check any local recordings or archives you depend on. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this is an operational detail, not a guarantee that an interrupted stream becomes one continuous event.
Troubleshooting after a restart
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS does not open | Startup shortcut or scheduled-task configuration | Check that the target or program path points to the actual obs64.exe. For Task Scheduler, verify the trigger and the Start in folder. |
| OBS opens but does not start streaming | Launch argument or OBS stream configuration | Confirm --startstreaming appears after the executable path and that the service and stream key work when you start manually. |
| OBS tries to connect but fails soon after restart | Network not ready, connection problem, or stream key | Check the internet connection and Live Control Room. If the PC or router takes time to reconnect, adjust the startup timing or retry approach for your system and test it. There is no universal delay that guarantees success. |
| OBS is connected but viewers cannot see the scheduled stream | YouTube event state | Check the preview and whether Live Control Room requires Go live for that scheduled stream. |
| Encoder cannot start or YouTube rejects the feed | Stream key or encoder connection | Check or refresh the stream key in YouTube Live Control Room, update OBS with the current key, and consult YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance. |
| Stream connects but quality is poor | OBS output settings or outbound connection | Review encoder output settings and the available upload connection; YouTube’s troubleshooting page can help identify common encoder-side issues. |
An OBS forum discussion notes that a startup connection attempt can fail when network equipment is still coming online. Treat that as a possibility to test on your own equipment, not a universal timing rule: OBS forum discussion about autostart after reboot. A UPS may bridge a short power interruption if it is sized for the connected load and desired runtime, but it does not restart Windows, restore internet service, or configure OBS reconnection.
