Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo recover a Mac mini YouTube stream after a power cut, configure the Mac to start when power returns, protect it and its network connection with a suitably sized UPS if you need ride-through or controlled shutdown, and make sure your encoder can relaunch and reconnect. These are separate parts of the recovery chain: macOS can restart the computer, but that alone does not guarantee that an encoder or YouTube broadcast will resume.
What has to recover after a power cut
A working return to air depends on each link coming back: power, the Mac, the required user session, the network, the encoder, and YouTube receiving the feed. Apple documents a desktop Mac setting for startup after a power interruption and UPS shutdown controls. YouTube documents how an encoder sends a stream using a stream URL and key. Neither establishes that every third-party encoder will reopen or resume a broadcast after a full reboot.
- Brief interruption: a UPS may keep the Mac and selected network equipment running while utility power is out.
- Longer interruption: a UPS can allow a configured shutdown; once power returns, the Mac can be set to start automatically.
- Broadcast recovery: the encoder must be available and sending video and audio, and YouTube must receive the feed. Verify this with the encoder you use.
Set the Mac mini to start when power returns
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Energy on the desktop Mac.
- Look for the power-failure startup option, such as Start up automatically after a power failure or a Start up when power is connected choice.
- Select the behavior you want. Where the controls offer Never, After power failure, and Always, choose according to whether the Mac should start only after an outage or whenever power is connected.
- Use the controls actually shown on your Mac mini. Apple notes that Energy settings can vary and not every option is available on every Mac.
Apple also documents advanced startup-after-power-failure controls through the systemsetup command-line utility, including -setrestartpowerfailure and -setWaitForStartupAfterPowerFailure. The startup-delay value must be 0 or a multiple of 30 seconds. For most owners, the Energy pane is the more straightforward option; administrators using Terminal or management tools should consult Apple’s current systemsetup documentation for exact command syntax and effects.
Choose whether to ride through the outage or shut down cleanly
A UPS can bridge a short interruption or give the Mac time to shut down when its battery reaches a chosen threshold. In System Settings > Energy, look for UPS Options to set a shutdown time or remaining battery level. The available options depend on the Mac and UPS setup.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Size a UPS for the combined equipment you need to keep alive—not just the Mac mini. Include the modem, router, and any other essential network equipment in the load estimate, then choose a desired runtime. Actual runtime depends on the selected UPS and connected load; Apple’s guidance does not establish a guaranteed number of minutes. If networking equipment loses power, a running Mac may still be unable to reach YouTube.
- Choose ride-through if your goal is to keep the stream going through brief power interruptions.
- Choose controlled shutdown if the outage may outlast the UPS battery and you want macOS to shut down at a selected time or battery level.
- Retain the automatic-start setting if you expect the Mac to come back after utility power is restored.
Prepare the encoder and YouTube stream
- In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the stream you intend to use.
- Enter those details in your encoder. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s password and address, so keep it private and do not publish or share it.
- Decide whether to reuse existing stream settings or create new ones. Reusing settings can retain the stream configuration and key.
- Review YouTube’s Auto-start & Auto-stop settings for the stream. These govern starting and stopping from an encoder; they do not make macOS reopen a local encoder after a reboot.
- Configure the particular encoder and Mac login/startup behavior you use, then establish whether that encoder can start unattended and reconnect to the intended YouTube stream. Some configurations may require a logged-in session or a manual restart; do not assume reboot recovery without checking the encoder’s own current instructions.
YouTube’s general encoder guidance explains the stream URL/key workflow, but it does not establish product-specific startup behavior for third-party encoders. The encoder’s own current documentation and a full recovery test are the way to determine whether your setup resumes automatically or needs an operator.

Test the complete recovery chain before relying on it
- Schedule a private or unlisted test stream as appropriate and confirm that the encoder preview shows the expected video and audio.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and verify that the event is accessible as intended from its watch page.
- Test the startup setting with a controlled power interruption. Confirm that the Mac starts, the required user session is available, and modem/router equipment returns to service.
- Check whether the encoder launches or needs restarting, and whether YouTube receives the feed again. Confirm the viewer-facing stream rather than relying only on the Mac appearing to be on.
- If you use a backup encoder, exercise its failover as well. YouTube recommends testing encoder operation, preview and health, event accessibility, and configured backup-encoder failover.
Do not perform a power test during a public broadcast unless you are prepared for viewers to see an interruption. A test is only useful if it checks the whole path through to YouTube, not just whether the Mac restarts.
Troubleshoot a stream that does not return
| What you observe | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The Mac remains off after power is restored. | Check the Energy startup option and whether your model presents the relevant control. | Choose the appropriate power-return behavior and test it again. |
| The Mac is on, but the encoder is not sending. | Check whether the encoder launched and whether its required user session is available. | Restart the encoder as needed; consult its own documentation for unattended startup and reconnect behavior. |
| The encoder is running, but YouTube is not receiving the stream. | Check the encoder’s stream URL and key, network access, and YouTube stream health. | If the encoder reports a startup error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to retrieve the current stream key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. |
| The Mac is on but appears offline. | Check whether the modem and router also lost power and whether they have recovered. | Include essential network equipment in the UPS plan, then repeat the recovery test. |
| The stream ends at the platform. | Review the stream’s Auto-start & Auto-stop settings and whether the encoder is actually sending. | Do not treat those platform settings as a substitute for configuring the Mac and encoder to recover. |
Understand YouTube archiving versus recovery
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving rule, not a promise that a stream interrupted by a power cut will resume, or that the resulting archive will be uninterrupted. Check the live event and encoder status after recovery.
