OBS cannot keep a local stream running while the computer or OBS is restarting. To recover, schedule updates for a quiet period, enable OBS’s automatic reconnect for temporary network drops, and configure the computer to reopen OBS and start streaming after a reboot. Then confirm that YouTube Studio is receiving the right broadcast. This is a recovery plan, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback: viewers may see a break during an update or restart.
Why OBS reconnect is not enough
Automatic reconnect and restart recovery solve different problems. OBS’s reconnect setting can help when an active OBS session loses its network connection. It cannot relaunch OBS after the program closes or the computer reboots. For that, the operating system must start OBS again, and OBS must be configured to start streaming.
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter as a way to automatically start streaming. Its documentation also says that automated Windows launches should use the folder containing obs64.exe as the working directory. See the OBS Project launch-parameters documentation.
Prepare the YouTube broadcast before updating
Protect and check the stream key
YouTube’s stream key is the credential OBS uses to send the feed; YouTube describes it as the stream’s password and address. Keep it private. If you reset the key in YouTube, replace the saved key in OBS before streaming again. YouTube’s setup guidance explains stream keys and encoder configuration: Set up your encoder for live streaming.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Review settings for a scheduled event
If you broadcast through a scheduled YouTube event, check its auto-start and auto-stop options before relying on an automated restart. Those settings determine whether beginning or ending encoder transmission also starts or ends the broadcast. YouTube says that reusing stream settings also carries those selections forward. Review the event in YouTube Studio rather than assuming a restarted encoder will behave like a fresh event.
Use a controlled update and recovery sequence
- Choose a maintenance window. Apply OBS and operating-system updates when the audience is smallest. For a station that needs to explain a pause, announce the window in advance and prepare a holding slate or audio message if the production setup supports one. A local software or OS restart can interrupt playback; neither OBS nor YouTube promises uninterrupted viewing through it.
- Save the intended OBS setup. Confirm the profile and scene used for the radio stream, along with the correct YouTube stream key. If your station depends on a named profile or scene, make sure your startup method opens that configuration rather than an unrelated default.
- Enable reconnect in OBS. In OBS, open Settings and look under Advanced for the automatic reconnect controls. The exact controls can vary by OBS version. This is for a transient connection loss while OBS remains open; it does not replace startup automation. See the OBS Project overview of Advanced settings.
- Set the operating system to launch OBS after boot. On Windows, use a startup mechanism such as Task Scheduler to launch OBS after sign-in or startup, with the appropriate OBS executable and the
--startstreamingparameter. Set the task’s working directory to the folder containingobs64.exe, as OBS specifies. Configure it to open the profile and scene your station needs. The cited OBS guidance does not provide a complete cross-platform scheduler recipe, so use the equivalent startup mechanism for your operating system and verify its behavior before depending on it. - Allow time for the network to return. A computer may finish booting before its router or internet connection is ready. Add a startup delay and a retry or monitoring step where your setup allows it. An OBS forum response from 2024 describes an initial connection failure that automatic reconnect did not solve in that user’s case; treat this as community experience, not a general guarantee. See the OBS forum discussion.
- Run a recovery test. Test the startup sequence during a planned maintenance window, not for the first time during a critical broadcast. Confirm the expected profile and scene load, OBS starts sending, and YouTube Studio shows the intended event receiving a signal.
Verify the stream in YouTube Studio
After OBS restarts, do not rely only on its status indicator. Check all of the following:

- OBS shows that it is actively streaming.
- YouTube Live Control Room shows an incoming signal and stream health.
- The correct scheduled event is selected, if you use one.
- The actual audio and video are present, not merely a connected encoder.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive behavior does not establish that a stream will resume without a viewer-visible interruption after a reboot. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Troubleshoot a stream that did not resume
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS never opens after a reboot | The startup task did not run, points to the wrong executable, or depends on a sign-in condition that was not met. | Check the operating system’s task or startup history, executable path, permissions, and sign-in conditions. Test the task manually. |
| OBS opens but does not stream | The launch parameter is missing, the wrong profile or scene loaded, or the saved stream configuration is incomplete. | Check that the launch includes --startstreaming, the intended profile and scene are selected, and OBS has the current stream key. |
| OBS tries to connect but YouTube receives no signal | The network may not be ready yet, the key may be wrong or reset, or the encoder may be targeting the wrong broadcast. | Allow time for the connection, verify the key in OBS against YouTube Studio, and confirm the intended event is selected. |
| OBS shows streaming, but the event does not behave as expected | The scheduled event’s auto-start or auto-stop settings may affect how encoder transmission controls the broadcast. | Review those settings in YouTube Studio, including any settings copied from a reused stream configuration. |
| The encoder connects but viewers hear or see nothing | The expected audio source, media, or scene may not have resumed correctly. | Inspect the active scene and sources in OBS, then check actual audio and video in YouTube Studio before treating recovery as complete. |
