A 24/7 YouTube stream is an encoded broadcast, so YouTube sends viewers the audio sequence supplied by your encoder or cloud playout service. If that source sorts files alphabetically, the live stream will follow that order.
Find where the track order is being set
Start with the system that actually selects and plays your music. It may be an OBS media playlist, radio automation software, an FFmpeg script, or a cloud playout service. A YouTube playlist viewed by your audience does not rearrange music already being sent as a live broadcast.
- Identify the application or service playing the files, rather than just the software transmitting the signal to YouTube.
- Open that source’s playlist, media list, or rotation settings and check whether it sorts by filename or title.
- Disable alphabetical sorting, drag tracks into a deliberate order, or enable shuffle if the source supports it.
- Check the shuffle behavior: it might take effect immediately, when playback restarts, or only after the current playlist pass ends.
- Make a short private or unlisted broadcast and listen through several track changes before relying on the setting for a long-running stream.
Change the order in your playout setup
OBS or another desktop playout application
Open the media source or playlist that feeds the broadcast and change its ordering there. Remove any alphabetical sort, reorder the items manually, or use the application’s shuffle option if available. OBS is a local workflow: the computer and its streaming session must stay running for the stream to continue. The specific controls vary by application and version, so confirm the behavior in a short test rather than assuming that a shuffle setting reshuffles immediately.
FFmpeg script on a VPS
If a script builds the playlist from a folder, inspect how it gathers and orders file paths. A script that sorts filenames will produce alphabetical playback even if YouTube is configured correctly. Change the input list or the script’s ordering logic, then restart or reload the playout process as required. A VPS avoids depending on a home desktop, but you remain responsible for server setup, process supervision, and recovery.

Cloud playout service
Use the service’s playlist or rotation controls to set a manual order or enable shuffle. Verify exactly when its shuffle applies. For example, playout.video’s help documentation says its shuffle randomizes items after each loop pass; that behavior is specific to that provider and should not be assumed for other services.
Keep the stream running while you troubleshoot
Changing a playlist may require restarting or reloading the source, depending on the tool. If interrupting the public broadcast is not acceptable, prepare the revised list separately and test it with a private or unlisted stream before applying it to the live setup. Check the source tool’s instructions for whether changes can be applied during playback.

- Make sure the playout process, encoder, and internet connection remain active for a continuous broadcast.
- Monitor playback and reconnects; a playlist setting cannot compensate for a stopped encoder or lost connection.
- Use only music you are authorized to broadcast continuously. Copyright claims or restrictions can affect a YouTube live stream.
Do YouTube live settings affect track order?
No. YouTube’s live-stream setup and ingest options govern how a signal reaches the platform, not the sequence of tracks chosen by your playout source. YouTube’s HLS guidance, for example, covers transport details such as segment duration and rolling-playlist behavior; it does not provide a universal music shuffle control. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming setup guidance for channel eligibility and setup, and its HLS ingestion documentation if configuring that protocol.
Choose a continuous-stream setup
For track rotation, compare the playlist controls, shuffle timing, failure recovery, monitoring, and operating burden—not just the way the signal is sent to YouTube.
