To run a looping rain-and-thunder stream from a Linux VPS, store a video you have rights to use on the server, send it to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, and manage FFmpeg with systemd so it can start at boot and restart after some process failures. YouTube must still accept the feed, and the VPS network must sustain its bitrate; systemd alone cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream.

What you need before you start

  • A Linux VPS with enough disk for your media and enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the stream. If FFmpeg will transcode, the VPS also needs enough CPU for that workload. There is no universally correct VPS size: choose based on your media, settings, provider bandwidth limits and billing, and test the actual connection.
  • A rain-and-thunder recording and video image or footage that you have permission to stream and, if applicable, monetize. A “royalty-free” or public-domain label alone does not establish that a particular file is safe for your intended use.
  • FFmpeg installed from a trusted distribution source. Available codecs and encoders depend on how that FFmpeg build was compiled; consult the FFmpeg documentation and check your installed build before relying on a particular encoder.
  • A configured YouTube Live broadcast and its current ingest endpoint and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.

This is a community-style implementation pattern, not an official YouTube deployment recipe or a guarantee of uninterrupted service. An example Ubuntu, FFmpeg, and systemd arrangement is documented in the 24/7 YouTube Stream setup and operations notes; treat it as an example, not a validated turnkey configuration.

Choose media and streaming settings

Prefer a single finished video when possible

A single video file with its rain-and-thunder audio already embedded is the simplest way to keep picture and sound in sync. With separate audio and video loops, durations and loop boundaries need testing: mismatched lengths can cause drift, a brief silence, or a visible/audio discontinuity. Inspect the input streams before configuring FFmpeg, and test the actual files rather than assuming every format can be copied directly.

Match the bitrate to resolution, frame rate, and codec

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), an approximately two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds, and testing at a quality the connection can sustain. Its published recommended video bitrates include:

Output AV1 or H.265/HEVC H.264
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommendations, not measurements of VPS performance. They do not include audio or operating headroom. Your VPS’s sustained upload capacity must exceed the complete outgoing stream rate, including audio, with room for network variation. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, up to 60 fps; use a codec your FFmpeg build supports and that works with the selected ingest path.

Audio and transport

YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended advanced stereo audio settings are 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the feed through Google’s servers; use it when your chosen ingest endpoint and FFmpeg setup support it. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current guidance.

Set up the VPS and YouTube broadcast

  1. Install FFmpeg. Use a trusted source for your Linux distribution. Check the installed build and confirm that the codecs or encoders you intend to use are available; some encoder wrappers require build-time support.
  2. Upload and inspect the media. Put the loopable file in a directory the streaming service account can read. Check that it contains the expected video and audio streams, and confirm that its format suits your chosen copy or transcode approach.
  3. Create the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, configure a broadcast, and obtain the current server/ingest URL and stream key. Do not paste a real key into a public script, repository, screenshot, or log. Treat it like a password.
  4. Choose output settings. Set the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, and audio parameters to match your media, FFmpeg build, network capacity, and YouTube’s recommendations. Do not select a bitrate from the table without confirming that the VPS can sustain the total feed.
  5. Test privately or unlisted first. Send a representative test and check picture, sound, loop boundaries, YouTube stream health, and warning messages in Studio. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and movement before going live and monitoring stream health and messages.
  6. Only after the test works, configure startup and recovery. Use a dedicated unprivileged Linux service account, a protected secret/configuration file, an explicit working directory, and a systemd restart policy. Enable the service at boot and verify that the broadcast appears live in YouTube Studio.

Run a loop with FFmpeg

If one pre-rendered file already has compatible video and audio streams, stream-copy can reduce server CPU use because FFmpeg does not re-encode them. It is not guaranteed to work for every input or ingest setup. This illustrative pattern loops the file and sends it in FLV format to an RTMPS ingest URL:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/rain-stream/rain-thunder.mp4 -c copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL"

Set YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL to the exact current ingest URL and stream-key path shown for your broadcast, without publishing its value. Confirm that the file’s codecs, container, timestamps, and stream parameters are accepted by YouTube. The command does not transcode or force a bitrate, frame rate, or keyframe interval; stream-copy preserves the input’s encoded properties. If those properties do not meet the intended output settings, configure and test a suitable transcode instead, with enough CPU capacity. FFmpeg options vary by input and build, so do not treat this as a universal command.

For independent audio and video sources, or if re-encoding is required, the input mapping, loop behavior, synchronization, and encoder options depend on the actual files and build. Test the resulting output before relying on it; there is no universally safe command for arbitrary media.

Protect the stream key with systemd

Keep the key in a configuration file readable only by the service account, not directly in a world-readable unit file or public script. For example, create /etc/rain-stream.env, set its owner to the dedicated service user and restrict its permissions so other users cannot read it. Its contents should define YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL as the private, exact ingest URL plus key supplied by YouTube. Do not include a real key in examples or logs.

A unit file can follow this general pattern; substitute the actual service user and paths for your system:

[Unit]
Description=Rain and thunder YouTube stream
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=rainstream
Group=rainstream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/rain-stream
EnvironmentFile=/etc/rain-stream.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/rain-stream/rain-thunder.mp4 -c copy -f flv ${YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL}
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Because systemd’s handling of environment-variable expansion in an ExecStart command can be easy to misconfigure, validate the unit on your distribution and ensure the URL is passed as one argument. If your setup cannot reliably pass the protected value this way, use a root-owned wrapper or another appropriately protected mechanism that reads the environment file and invokes FFmpeg without printing the secret. Never solve expansion problems by placing the real key in a public or broadly readable command line.

After saving the unit as /etc/systemd/system/rain-stream.service, reload systemd and start and inspect it:

The example community operations notes also use a systemd-managed FFmpeg process and warn that the stream key must be protected. A restart policy can relaunch FFmpeg after some process failures; it does not fix invalid credentials, unsupported media, YouTube-side interruptions, or a broken network connection. Confirm the stream’s observed state in YouTube Studio as well as the local service status.

Monitor and troubleshoot the stream

Keep an operator procedure for stream loss, low disk, high CPU, network problems, and YouTube warnings. Local process output and YouTube’s observed stream state are different checks: if you need dependable operations, monitor both and arrange alerts and manual recovery. Do not claim uninterrupted 24/7 availability without measured operations and a defined service level.

  • FFmpeg exits or repeatedly restarts: inspect sudo systemctl status rain-stream.service and sudo journalctl -u rain-stream.service. Look for file path, permissions, missing codec, malformed URL, or input errors; fix the cause before relying on automatic restart.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed: verify the broadcast is configured and that the current ingest URL and key are correct and passed intact. Check network connectivity and RTMPS support. Rotate the key if it was exposed.
  • Stream health warns about bitrate or instability: lower the output target or choose a lower resolution/frame rate, then test again. Compare the full video-plus-audio rate with sustained VPS upload capacity rather than a brief speed test alone.
  • Audio is silent, drifts, or breaks at a loop boundary: inspect the file’s audio stream and test a full loop. Prefer a single file with embedded audio, or adjust and validate independent source durations and synchronization.
  • Picture or audio settings are rejected: verify the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio format being sent. A stream-copy command preserves source properties; use a supported transcode only after confirming the FFmpeg build and available CPU.
  • The VPS fills up or runs hot: check disk use and CPU, remove only files you no longer need, and reassess whether the media and encoding workload fit the instance. Do not assume a particular VPS plan is sufficient without testing.
