To repeat one lecture in OBS, enable Loop in the Media Source properties. To play several lectures in order and repeat the sequence, use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled. These settings loop the media; they do not guarantee that the live broadcast itself stays connected if OBS, the computer, power, or network fails.
Repeat one lecture file in OBS
- In OBS, add or select a Media Source.
- Open the source properties and enable Loop. OBS documents that this repeats the file after playback completes. OBS Project: Media Sources
- Leave Restart playback when source becomes active enabled if the lecture should begin from the start whenever the source becomes active. OBS lists this option as on by default.
- Choose whether to enable Show nothing when playback ends. It hides the source if playback finishes, rather than leaving the final frame onscreen. With Loop enabled, ordinary playback should repeat instead of reaching that final state.
Loop a sequence of lectures
- Add a VLC Video source in OBS and put the lecture files in its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist. OBS lists it as on by default; it restarts the source after it runs out of media files. The setting is described as: “Loop Playlist | Specifies whether the source should restart when it has run out of media files” (OBS Project, Media Sources, 2022-01-11).
- Keep Shuffle Playlist off if lectures need to play in a fixed order. OBS lists shuffle as off by default.
- Install VLC if the VLC Video source is unavailable. Match the application architecture: OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Check what happens when the source is hidden
For a VLC Video source, review Visibility Behaviour. It controls whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is not visible. OBS documents the default as Stop when not visible, restart when visible; change it if scene changes should not interrupt playback. OBS Project: Media Sources
Media looping is not the same as a continuous live connection
OBS’s Loop option repeats a local file or playlist in the scene. YouTube’s video or playlist Loop control instead repeats playback for a viewer; it is not the setting that feeds a repeating source to a live encoder. YouTube Help: Loop videos or playlists on YouTube
A repeating source cannot by itself keep a broadcast online through an OBS crash, computer shutdown, power loss, or network outage. The cited OBS and YouTube guidance does not establish whether a particular platform and setup will reconnect after failure or permit an indefinite stream. YouTube’s HLS guidance describes ingestion details such as segment format, rolling playlist limits, HTTPS requests, and supported codecs; it notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because video is sent in segments.
