On Debian, install FFmpeg from the configured Debian repositories with sudo apt install ffmpeg, verify it with ffmpeg -version, then configure and supervise a separate FFmpeg process that sends your programme to YouTube Live. Installation alone does not establish that your input, encoder, network connection or YouTube ingest is working. For an unattended stream, you must test the full path and arrange process supervision, logging and recovery.

Install FFmpeg from Debian’s repositories

Debian’s documented installation route is its packaged FFmpeg. Run these commands in a terminal on the Debian machine that will stream:

  1. sudo apt update refreshes the package information from your configured repositories.
  2. sudo apt install ffmpeg installs FFmpeg and its packaged tools.
  3. ffmpeg -version confirms that the executable runs and prints build information.
  4. ffprobe -version checks the companion media-inspection tool.

Debian’s package listing describes the package as including ffmpeg, ffplay, ffprobe and qt-faststart. Use the repositories configured for your Debian system rather than copying a package version from another release. Debian’s package pages listed 7:7.1.5-0+deb13u1 for stable (trixie) and 7:5.1.9-0+deb12u1 for bookworm when accessed on 2026-10-03; those are dated listings, not guaranteed versions for every system. See Debian’s FFmpeg wiki and the Debian package listing.

If a command or codec you need is missing, inspect the installed build before changing repositories or compiling:

Codec availability and hardware acceleration depend on the build and system; do not assume a particular encoder is present merely because FFmpeg is installed.

Choose YouTube Live settings before building the command

Match the FFmpeg output to the YouTube Live mode you intend to use and to the encoders actually available on Debian. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as video choices for RTMP/RTMPS. It lists AAC or MP3 for audio, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For ordinary SDR, the guidance specifies Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth; HDR has separate guidance. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and the settings for your selected Live workflow.

Resolution, frame rate and bitrate belong together

Choose a resolution and frame rate that your input, encoder and sustained upload can maintain. The figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations, not a guarantee of quality or a measurement of your connection. The recommended values differ for AV1 and H.265, so do not apply this H.264 table to another codec.

H.264 mode YouTube minimum bitrate YouTube recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
4K at 30 fps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps

These figures come from YouTube’s encoder settings. Your connection needs reliable sustained upload capacity with headroom beyond the stream’s bitrate; a brief speed test does not prove that a 24/7 upload will remain stable. Test with movement and audio similar to the actual programme, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and status messages.

RTMPS or HLS

For a continuous contribution where supported and where lower latency is wanted, RTMPS aligns directly with YouTube’s guidance. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than one continuous stream. HLS may still fit a workflow whose compatibility and latency requirements allow for that difference. Consult YouTube’s encoder guidance and streaming protocol information for the chosen mode.

Prepare the input and stream key

Before running FFmpeg unattended, verify that the input file or capture source is available and that the intended audio and video streams are present. Use ffprobe to inspect a media file, for example ffprobe input.mp4. A successful probe does not prove that FFmpeg can encode the material in real time or that YouTube will accept the outgoing stream.

Create or select the YouTube Live stream in YouTube Studio and obtain its stream key and server details from that workflow. Treat the key as a password: do not commit it to a public repository, expose it in screenshots or shared command history, or put it in an openly readable script. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Studio. Keep the destination protocol and settings consistent with the selected YouTube ingest workflow.

Build and test the FFmpeg stream

There is no single command that is correct for every input, Debian build and YouTube mode. In the command below, replace the input path, encoder options and destination with values appropriate to your source and current YouTube settings. Use an encoder listed by ffmpeg -encoders; set the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, CBR behavior and keyframe interval deliberately. For H.264, for example, a two-second keyframe interval means setting the GOP length to twice the output frame rate. Do not paste a sample without confirming that each option fits your encoder and output mode.

  1. First run FFmpeg interactively with the selected input and destination, supplying the stream key securely. Avoid embedding a real key in a script that others can read or in a command that will remain in shared shell history.
  2. Confirm that the input plays or capture source is available, audio and video are present, and encoding keeps pace with the intended output.
  3. Watch YouTube Studio’s stream health and status messages while the test runs; check for unstable upload, missing audio/video or ingest errors.
  4. Test for long enough to expose sustained CPU or network problems, using programme material with activity similar to the real stream.

YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the real stream and monitoring status during the event. A command that starts without an immediate error is not evidence that the complete stream is healthy.

Keep the process running unattended

An FFmpeg process launched in an interactive terminal ends if that session or host stops. For unattended operation, run it under a service manager such as systemd, configure an appropriate restart policy, send logs somewhere an operator checks, and arrange for the host to start the service after reboot. These are operational safeguards, not a guarantee of continuous YouTube availability; configure and validate them on your own Debian system.

A restart policy can restart a process, but it cannot repair a missing input, invalid or expired stream key, inadequate upload, unsupported encoder configuration or YouTube-side stream-health problem. Before relying on a 24/7 setup, test the whole chain: input playback or capture, audio and video, sustained encoding load, network upload, YouTube ingest, logs and recovery after a controlled process restart.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
ffmpeg or ffprobe is not found Installation or command path Run sudo apt update and sudo apt install ffmpeg, then verify with ffmpeg -version and ffprobe -version.
Requested encoder is unavailable Installed FFmpeg build Check ffmpeg -encoders and the build details from ffmpeg -version; choose a supported encoder before considering other installation methods.
FFmpeg cannot open or read the source Input path, permissions or source availability Check the path and access for the account running the process; inspect a file with ffprobe and verify that a capture source is available.
YouTube does not receive a healthy stream Destination, stream key, codec or output settings Confirm the current YouTube server details and key, inspect FFmpeg’s errors, and align codec, bitrate, frame rate and keyframe interval with the selected YouTube mode.
Stream health degrades or disconnects Network capacity, sustained encoding or ingest Check YouTube status messages, verify sustained upload headroom and encoding load, and repeat a representative test before returning to unattended operation.
Stream stops after logout or reboot Process supervision or startup configuration Move the command from the interactive shell into a supervised service, configure restart and startup behavior, and check its logs.
