UHD is negotiated automatically when your account, title, app, device, HDMI chain, and connection all qualify. In the United States, there is an additional checkpoint: Amazon says Prime Video Ultra became the premium tier for 4K/UHD access on April 10, 2026.
United States, checked August 18, 2026: confirm the right subscription
Amazon lists Prime Video Ultra at $4.99 per month in the United States, with 4K/UHD, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, ad-free viewing and other enhanced features. Amazon also lists the underlying Prime membership at $14.99 per month or $139 per year, and Prime Video Ultra at $45.99 annually for eligible annual Prime members. See the announcement at Amazon’s Prime Video Ultra information.
Ultra does not make every program 4K. Resolution, HDR formats, live programming, add-on channels, rentals and purchases remain title- and rights-dependent. This is a U.S. policy; prices, tiers and UHD access can differ in other countries.
The fast 4K checklist
- Your account has Prime Video Ultra, or the applicable local tier that explicitly includes UHD.
- The title page shows UHD or 4K UHD, and possibly HDR, Dolby Vision or HDR10+.
- You are using a compatible 4K television app or streaming player.
- The playback app is not limited to HD, as current computer browsers and desktop apps are.
- Your network is stable at the playback device.
- Every link in the HDMI path—including a receiver or soundbar—can pass the required 4K/HDR signal.
How to start a 4K stream
- Check the account. Sign in to Prime Video or Amazon, open account or subscription management, and verify Prime Video Ultra (or the qualifying regional equivalent). Menu labels vary by app and country. On a shared account, check the active profile and account region.
- Find a UHD title. Search for “4K” or “UHD,” or use Prime Video’s UHD filter where available. Amazon describes that filtering here: Prime Video search and filtering. Open the details page and confirm the UHD version is included, rented, purchased or supplied by the relevant add-on channel.
- Choose a capable playback route. Use the television’s native Prime Video app, a compatible Fire TV/Fire TV Stick, or another player whose exact model is listed in Amazon’s current compatibility documentation: device capabilities and device installation and registration.
- Set the television input correctly. If an external player is connected, select the HDMI input and enable the manufacturer’s enhanced mode, such as Enhanced, Deep Color or 4K mode, if required.
- Check the whole HDMI chain. A receiver or soundbar between the player and television must support the relevant 4K/HDR pass-through and copy-protection implementation. Requirements vary by model; HDCP 2.2 and HDMI 2.0 are common in many setups, not universal rules.
- Let adaptive streaming settle. Prime Video can begin below its maximum and increase quality after playback stabilizes. Prefer Ethernet or strong 5-GHz/6-GHz Wi-Fi, pause competing traffic, and restart the router and player if quality continues to fluctuate.
Which devices can deliver Prime Video UHD?
| Playback route | Amazon’s documented maximum | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Fire TV and Fire TV Stick | Up to Ultra HD | Exact model, app, title and region still matter. |
| Compatible smart-TV apps | Model-dependent | Check the current Amazon device list and keep TV firmware updated. |
| Selected Android devices | Up to Ultra HD | Android model and configuration can change the result. |
| iPhone and iPad | Up to HD | Amazon’s current support table lists iOS mobile playback as HD. |
| Web browsers | Up to HD | A 4K monitor or HDMI cable does not remove the browser limit. |
| Windows 10/11 and macOS 11.4 Big Sur or later apps | Up to HD | See Amazon’s computer requirements at this support page. |
Amazon’s device documentation is the safer reference than a brand-wide claim about “Roku,” “Samsung,” Android phones or game consoles, because support changes by model, software and territory.

Why a 4K television can still show HD
Account or entitlement
If no title shows a UHD badge, verify the U.S. Ultra subscription or local equivalent, country and account region. Third-party channel content can follow separate rules. A Prime membership by itself is not proof of current U.S. UHD eligibility.
Title availability
One program may offer UHD while another offers only HD. Check the title details rather than relying on a poster, and search separately for a UHD edition. Rental, purchase and subscription listings can have different formats.

App or device limitation
Browser, Windows, macOS and iOS playback is currently documented as HD maximum. Connecting a laptop to a 4K television therefore may still produce HD. Switch to the native TV app or a known UHD-capable streaming device, then update the app and firmware.
Network or HDMI bottleneck
Amazon says it adjusts quality to available bandwidth and device conditions and may reduce resolution to prevent interruptions. Its published guidance specifies at least 5 Mb/s for HD and 1 Mb/s for SD, but does not provide a definitive current 4K minimum in the cited support material. Test the connection at the player, not only at the router.

- Try another HDMI port, enable enhanced input mode, or replace a suspect cable.
- Test a second title marked UHD to separate a title-rights issue from a system issue.
Amazon’s playback caveats are documented at its quality and device help page and bandwidth guidance.
4K, UHD and HDR are different
4K/UHD describes resolution—consumer television video is normally 3840 × 2160 pixels. Amazon’s delivery specification defines 4K UHD assets as at least 3840 pixels wide by 2160 pixels high: Amazon Video Central requirements.

HDR expands brightness and color range; it is not a resolution. HDR10, Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are different HDR systems, and title and device support varies. A program can be 4K without Dolby Vision, or HDR without delivering the same picture mode on every television. A UHD badge indicates availability or entitlement, not a guarantee that adaptive streaming is currently delivering the highest resolution.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to verify what you are actually receiving
- Confirm UHD and any HDR-format badges on the title details page before playback.
- Use the television’s information panel or picture-mode indicator to see whether the input reports 3840 × 2160 and an HDR mode.
- Check the player’s display diagnostics when available; labels differ by manufacturer.
- Test after several minutes of stable playback, because the initial stream can be lower quality.
Do not treat the TV’s 4K capability as proof that Prime Video supplied a 4K stream. Amazon states that compatibility requirements and supported devices can change over time: Prime Video terms and device policy.

Is Prime Video Ultra worth it?
For a U.S. subscriber with a large 4K/HDR television, a compatible native app or streamer, and frequent Prime Video viewing, $4.99 per month is the first upgrade to evaluate. It is less useful for browser-only viewing, an HD television, an unstable connection, or a catalog that rarely includes programs you want in UHD. Buying a new TV or streaming box cannot fix a missing entitlement, unavailable title, regional restriction or HD-limited computer app.
If Ultra is active but UHD is absent across several known-compatible titles, use the Prime Video help center after completing the direct-to-TV and network tests.
